Well, the lowdown is, this power to weight law isnt gonna change for awhile from what i've seen so im selling my 250gn and buy a bigger 250(not that hard).

Im a bit torn, because my dad filled my head with brilliant stories of screaming 2 strokes, but i want to be able to cruise places(2hrs+). Love the look and idea of having a streetfighter(and/or a naked 250 rgv amazing amiright?) but the same problem really :(

Looked for hours on trademe and still cant decide. Seen quite a few intruders and what not which look like they could do the job. Any ideas?

Get a jappa 250cc 4-cylinder bike like a zxr250 or cbr250. You should be able to pickup something good for $2-3k

Yup,should be able to get something good for around 4k!

Just stick with a Jappa Inline 4.

inline 4 250, you mention naked look. that involves the bandit, the zeal, the balius, the hornet. all pretty darn fun and don't mind revving and will keep you entertained for the licensing period.

sweet, thanks for the replies.
Oh damn, the wolf is fine. Looked on trademe but nothing :(

What are the gsx'rs like? same specs yeah? and seem to be quite a few on trademe.
Is it better to get a newer bike and pay a grand more or does it not matter hugely?
Keen on a 4 cylinder, just need to suss some disposable income.

i thoroughly ♥ the totally over-dramatic and out-dated name.

the gsxr is the faired bandit. revs out to about 18,500 rpm. I have no idea on the issues with these bikes, have a search on here and see what comes up.

You don't really see many gsxr250's around on the road. I've *heard* that they were super-unreliable.

The Wolf is bollox.

You want this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=320651695

It comes without Suzuki's special low build quality features like corrosion, seized brake calipers, and frozen bolts.

The Yamaha looks sick, but sadly its out of my price range, and at the other end of the country(live in northland). Fawned at it ages ago, really like the look of it and saw some vids on the youtube and looks like it goes pretty nice too.

Haha, yeah that name is classic, wouldnt even have to rename it.

Whats peoples opinions of age? alot of bikes around the 10-20 year mark are around 2-4k, but is it worth buying a cheaper older bike? dont plan on having it for more than a year and a half. all opinions/experiences welcome

Fucken right you wouldn't. After wobbling around on a shitty ol MHR that Yammy would scare the beejesus outta an old boy like you. You'd have to change your incontenance pad 4 times between your place and Picton.

mine is 16 years old. almost 17 soon. mine was 2.5k worth. I do not believe that when I come to sell it in about 18 months I should lose much money on her. Oh, and I like my bike a lot  she is one loud fucker for a bike with stock exhausts (none of this low emission/noise crap in 1994 :woohoo:)

I do not think age matters too greatly, you are just 'more likely' to have an issue with the bike, especially if there is not a lot of service history available for the bike in question. It just comes down to being able to access parts for the bike and figuring out the 'issues' with certain bikes. Like the cbr mc19 has fuel pump issues, and are a lot of money for a part that is pretty darn tiny.

that isn't to say that i'd steer clear of them

I think also some bikes are just desirable even if they are 20 years old. the honda spada comes to mind, a lot of people on here love those bikes.

the zeal I own was made from like 1990/91 to 1999 i think, and in aussie they have a headlight fairing thing that i saw on a 2000 model. so 10 or so years producing a very similar bike must not be too bad when having to acquire parts.

for the budget you are in, the 10 to 20 year old bikes are pretty much what you need to look at for the naked or faired sport bikes. the only newer bike that you might get for 4k is a hyosung.
