Just got my first trail/adventure bike  after riding sports bikes for 12+ years...the newbie in the garage is a 05 DRZ400.I'm .just in the process of getting it road legal and busting my gut to take it for a (legal) ride :innocent:

Currently it is just sitting in the garage awaiting a few parts...so to ease my impatience at having to wait for my first virgin adventure ride...please post your cool pics and vids to keep me and others amped

There are lots of pics on other threads but it would be cool to have them all in one place so when I am bored at work :gob: ...oops I mean on my lunch break... I can check them out without having to troll through heaps of threads...:scooter:

All I can kick it off with is a picture of my bike in the back yard..sorry boring I know but feel free to top it :corn::wari::drinknsin
Cheers,
Wayne

Welcome to the fraternity.

My youtube channel has mostly adventuring on it with a couple of trail rides and sealed road rides in the mix.
The earlier stuff is a bit fuzzier than the newer stuff as youtube has upgraded their recoding system since my first videos went online.
Unfortunately Youtube playback usually works faster during the day rather than evenings.

That's Takapari Road, which runs along the top of the Ruahine range. The track goes up the other side of the range, as the side shown is the steep side.

I run a not very aggressive 50/50 type tyre. Good on the road or rocky terrain, but crap in mud or on grass. I haven't had too many problems with stability on the road. What pressure are you running. It may be too low. Rimlocks can cause a vibration also.

Silver bullet...

All things muddy....if you are just starting to ride dirt do the family rides first or you may be regreting your decision, some bits can be a bit discouraging at first.

The MMMMM starts on the Napier - Taupo road and heads north through Forest, around lake Waikaremoana, all over the back blocks and ends up at Rotorua.

It's run by Clint on here.

15 psi is a bit low for road stuff. You'll shred those tyres in no time. Run them above 35 psi for the road. You only need low pressure for mud, and you can always drop them once you start getting in trouble.

Check out http://www.myrides.co.nz/trail-rides-xidc53532.html for trail rides. Most of the Canterbury ones are on it.

Cheers R

P.s. Welcome to the dirty side.

cooneyr has listed the myrides site which is the main one I look at for Trail Ride info.

I run the DR650 tyres at 20 to 22 psi both ends for just about everything, sometimes 25in the rear for seal with a load.
Mud might tempt me to lower them closer to 15 to 18psi but I'd be careful on rocks at that pressure and stop to pump them up again before getting to far back on the road .

My CRF230 which a dedicated off roader and a much lighter bike usually has 10 to 14psi in it with rim locks and of course never gets used on the seal as it's got no plate etc.

Thanks transalper and Bart..I have increased the psi to 25-25 and it rode alot better on the road today! Sprocket wise...Can you remember what sprockets you were running on your drz400? At present I have a 14-47..It seems to be revving pretty high at 100k on the road..Has anyone found a good mix of sprockets for it to sit a bit more comfortably at 100k..yet still ride well off road?? A friend informs me of hearing 15/44 is a nice mix..Anyone tried this??

Any suggestions muchly appreciated

Also I am on the look out for a larger tank..Does anyone know where these can be purchased at a reasonable price?? New ones I have seen so far are pretty blimmin pricey..

ALso looking at a pack rack for the drz..or some way to carry some gear as space is at a bit of a premium compared to my vtr..Have any of you seasoned lot found (cartage wise) something that has worked well on a drz400???

I am loving these pics and vids :niceone::not::drinknsin..keep them coming..
Anyone have any pics/vids of the Danseys pass trail ride in Duntroon this weekend they might have posted?? I missed it unfortunatley due to inlaws b/day party of all things  Sad I know...

14/47 is good for trail riding. I found 14/41 the best for Adventure stuff. Still a bit revvy at 100km, but would sit there all day, and still low enough geared to get most places offroad.

I'd run 15/41 occasionally, but found the engine lugging, and wasn't as responsive.

Mentioning the larger tank... second hand is the only way you will get one for a good price. I paid the price for new and went through justgastanks.com but worth every penny.

Racks for the back or Pannier bag frames to keep em off the pipes and get the weight low... may be similar issue finding cheap but some here have made their own or had them made instead of getting the ventura or what ever other stuff.

Just a thought..
wondering if anyone wanted to trade services...

I am really keen to improve my off road riding skills..so I am looking for someone well versed in this area who could offer me tips, pointers and techniques etc.. while out trying them...

In return I could offer either beer of your choice  or road riding skills (been riding road bikes for 12+years, as well as 3 seasons racing GP bike)..or for the adventurous type..I am an outdoor instructor and can show you how to rock climb, abseil, flat/white water/sea kayak or show some bush survival skills/tramping..

I am in the mighty Timaru area..but could travel a wee way..Anyone interested please give me a yell...
Cheers,

Don't underestimate the DRZ. It is the KTM690 of a decade ago (along with the yamy 400). Set up right, it'd be as quick as most things in those conditions. :scooter:
