View Full Version : 883 - and how I wanted to hate this bike.

So I have decided the dual purpose thing isn't for me.
I rode my friends XL1200 Harley Sportser.
Didn't really like it, feet forward, just not quite right for me.
Saw a 883 in at Road and Sport, so I did a bit of reading on the 883.
Lots of comments like,
“it is a girls bike”
“it doesn't have enough power”
“the brakes are crap”
“the seat is hard”
“it vibrates like hell”
So there I was, japper rider from way back, Harley mocker from way back.
Ready to hate the ride.
Rock up to the dealer, step off the DR and onto the 883.
Plonk my arse on to the seat, nice, fit like a glove (not that I usually wear gloves on my arse), reach for the bars, not bad, not a cramped riding position like everyone said. (I am just shy of 6ft).
Key on, press the starter, fuck me! That sounds good, stock pipes I think, but I know there is a motorbike round here somewhere. The idle is slow, sounds like an Iroquois helicopter going over head LOL. At first I kept thinking it was about to stall. Vibrating like hell just sitting there. (I am supposed to hate that, but I don't)
Off I go. Foot position good, not forward, gives me an upright riding position that I like.
Mirrors blurry – don't care – that shit is behind me.
Riding round town first, because this would be my commuter too, easy in traffic, not too big, no trouble splitting. Still loving being back on a twin, loving the sound.
Bit of a blat out on open road speeds, now sure, lots of vibrations here out at highway speeds. I think I could live with that. I suspect after a couple of hours I might have a numb arse and tingling hands and feet.
No pillion seat or pegs, but like most things can be remedied by throwing more cash at it.
Got used to cruiser cornering again pretty quickly, much different from the DR (wow what a big surprise there).
Brakes are pretty average, but I ride with pretty decent situational awareness so it is not too bad. Would be pretty hard to pull up in an emergency stop I would think.
Peanut tank, so only about the same range as the DR, 190ks ish. Not great but usually in NZ you will hit a servo long before that.
So back to the dealer.
Park it up, look over at the DR. Hmmm
Into to the dealer, called him a bastard, coz I was supposed to hate that and easily write Harleys off my possible bikes to buy list.
So to summarise my reasons not to buy list.
“it is a girls bike” - I could care less, ridden girls bikes in the past, usually the most fun
“it doesn't have enough power” - was enough for me – I ain't out to break land speed records
“the brakes are crap” - ok with riding with situational awareness
“the seat is hard” - yep so was my SV and DR and GSX
“it vibrates like hell” - yep – I think I like that.
So fuck it – I liked it. DAMN
Even the baby Harley has more personality than any of the Jap cruisers I have ridden so far. Still want to try the M50 or C50, but even if technically and price wise they beat the Harley hands down, thats not what it is about is it.
The ride home on the DR was a lot less fun than it usually is. :bye:

The 883 for me is the best Harley. And the only true harley in my mind.
For one simple reason......why do you buy a Harley?
History.
And the 883 is the only one that has had subtle changes.......for the very simple reason, it was good from the start. Its like the ol' stirling .22 I have at home. Does the job good so why the fuck would I change it.
I hope harley never change it.

Mstriumph hired an '08 883 in the States - said it was the most cramped bike she has ever ridden....knees up around her ears, bars too far back... and would top out at around 90-95 (mph) She's only 5'11. She hated the thing!

Good write up . I, like you, took a Harley out mostly because I could, I'll be honest I'd spent many years on the 'Anti' Harley team and indeed on my return to the Garage I had a list of design faults/shortcomings as long as your arm.
The dealer listened to me whine on for an age, slowly getting more and more despondent as his prospective Sale drifted away from him, No Freeking brakes, windscreens crap, 5mm ground clearance! etc. Once I'd got it all off my chest and the poor chap had resigned himself to a no-sale, I asked for the papers and bought the damn thing. Rather surprised, he asked why I was buying it if I disliked it so much.
Much as someone said in an earlier post, Despite all it's negatives, the fact is I'd had a great time on it. It's all about how good you feel when your riding it eh, doesn't matter a toss what any one else thinks, if it feels good do it.:scooter:
PS. I happen to think the 883 and the 48 are two of the best looking, bare bones, engine and frame bikes out there today, they don't suit everyone and you do find yourself making compromises compared to other stuff available but so what, life's about enjoying what you do.

Perzackery! I can only have one, so hence the C50T, it's the best all-round compromise I've ever owned or ridden! Aside from that, it's just a bike I love - style and practicality and versatility all in one! :sunny:

I haven't ridden a late model Sporty ( I wouldn't want to,as I'd be in the same situation as the OP),but a mid '90's standard 883 is a bike I feel really happy on.They are flickable and come out of corners really strong...I'm not into dragging knees, but scrapping pegs is really my thing. The noise is a bonus. The tastes of someone who thinks a 1987 R65 is cutting edge may not define the motorcycle of today - but first thing on my LOTTO win list is a 48.

I was really enjoying your review until you threw in the character card. Pisses me off as if the same crap people claim as 'character' on HD's etc featured on a Jap brand they would rubbish it as vibrating too much, temperamental to start etc. Every bike I've ever owned, be lent or test ridden had some form of 'character' - liking or affording it or not was a completely different matter!
Right - that's off my chest.
I personally highly rate the Sportsters and recent additions like the Nightster and 48 only add to the appeal. However the 883 is indeed a gutless motor best ignored - go straight to the 1200  Heck many of the 883's you see being sold have had a 1200cc kit fitted, those poor owners should have shelled out the small extra cost of getting the 1200 in the first place and spent the balance of $ they put towards the big bore kit on some decent suspension.
Just an opinion. Ride the 1200 before signing up the 883.
Girls bike - pifffff, pass me a leather mini skirt then, I rate the Sporster.

You're right. They aren't the most comfortable, best handling, best stopping or fastest bikes out there but they do have a certain appeal. Brother was looking at s victory, really nice bike. In the end he didn't go that way as "it's not a Harley".
Each to their own I reckon, I love my Fat Bob. Others love their Suzuki's etc. There're all fellow bikers. Ride what makes YOU feel good and f&@k what others think.
P.S. I'm not a Harley snob, I wave to scooter riders as well!

Sporties vibrate a whole lot less now the engine is rubber mounted (the did that from '04' onwards). They've never been hard to start.
Whilst the old carbed 883 was no power house, the injected ones ('07' onwards) go as well as the old carbed 1200's. An 883 is not expensive to turn into a 1200 either, probably around 2k, and then they actually go better than a 1200. Sound like bs I know, but it's true. The have a smaller combustion chamber, and inlet ports, so have a higer compression ratio and better inlet velocity when taken to 1200 than the 1200.
Having raced the old carbed 883's...I love people thinking they're girls bikes. A lot of people here have gone a lot slower at race tracks I've been to on their full on sports bikes than we were doing on the girls bikes. But I wore leathers, not the skirt.
Try an new 883, you may well be surprised and impressed.

I know what you are saying here, and it is a fair point. I was just trying to describe the rather intangible thing that when I was riding or looking at the sportster, it just grabbed me in some way the other cruisers I have looked at didn't. Even more than the Speedmaster so it wasn't just a anti jap thing - although that was how I phrased it.
You're right. They aren't the most comfortable, best handling, best stopping or fastest bikes out there but they do have a certain appeal.
Thats it for me, there was just a certain appeal, stripped down, basic, and in some ways kinda nasty. I loved it.
I don't ride from Ham to Well or for hours and hours every weekend. It will be my ride every day to work in all weathers bike. And escape some weekends when I can bike.
I think it would suit me to the ground.
Now I will just have to get used to people judging me because I ride a sporty.....
I have had practice....
I have had grief for riding the following....
A GN
A SV
A DR
LOL
Look at that... all Suzi's - other bikes I have ridden have only attracted minor shit slinging.
My two favourite bikes so far have been my GS500 (my first 'big' bike) and the SV, another girls bike but god it was fun and at almost always legal speeds.

Almost the best bike as a tourer for newzealand roads
= Not fast enough to get tickets. ( want to out run a plod on one?)
= peanut tank ensures a coffee and a piss is taken often
= vibration means you cannot fall asleep
= poor brakes means you dont risk supersonic twisty manovers
= exhuast note is better sounding than an Ipod
= out of nessesity the jouney becomes better than the destination
The 84 sporty I had did the curcuit of the south island many times over in 2 years , never let me down once, only ever replaced the chain tyres and oil....

buy the 883, they have different heads with samller ports than the 1200 and a kitted 883 is usually quicker than the factory 1200 and ultimately you can extract more power from the 883 heads than the 1200 heads
cost of converting a 883 to 1200 is not a lot and can be done in an afternoon by a competent bike shop
forget the harley clones, gerneally they do not hold their resale value and the evo sporty motor is pretty well bullet proof

Interesting comments re 883 to 1200. Sounds like I was wrong (my kids tell me this happens often .....).
And he is right regarding resale on Harleys as a rule, however I've recently heard rather poor reports on low trades being offered on Sports by HD dealers. It may be a local thing I don't know. It's a give the Suzukis and the likes will drop a fair bit on trade value.
It is an interesting thing the cruiser market - there are Harleys, which ironically were never actually cruisers, just Harleys - that's just they way they were built! The phrase was not really coined until relatively recently (in bike years) - When Yamaha started doing 'factory customs' in the late 70's very early 80's they were 'specials' or 'customs'.
I am still surprised none of the Jap makers has revisited the high powered IL4 cruiser - I still think there is potential for a custom derivative of a standard. WTF says a cruiser has to be a V-twin? Maybe with ducati entering the scene the power wars will start again in this segment.

Couldn't agree more Allan,it's like the whole motorcycling world is stuck in the V twin/low power mind set when it comes to cruisers. High time they had another go at IL4, IL3 custom special thingies with the running gear of a naked/standard bike but with a custom type stylie, it can be done. I do acknowledge that some previous incarnations were a bit Fugly but I remember a beautiful home made FJ1200 custom thing, all the power/handling/brakes/Ground clearance of the original bike but fantastic custom lines.
I suppose Triumph have at least tried to break the Vtwin fashion with a couple of their models. Harley should stick with it though, wouldn't be a Harley without a Vtwin throbber.

I rode the '10 883 at last year's launch and I liked it.
It is your basic motorcycle. No adornments extras palaver or anything unnecessary.
That works for me.
I rode 4 units in all - one had slightly woody brakes - possibly in need of a bleed - The rest of them were as sweet as. Good stoppers.
If you want a no bull bike - pretty cheap at the moment too.
Personally, the new Road King with the 103 cube is one of my bike of the year contenders.

Girls bike - pifffff, pass me a leather mini skirt then, I rate the Sporster.
dont forget to post a pic of yourself in that leather skirt. Make sure you've shaved your legs this time.
Oh, yeah. I'd have one (a Nightster) in a heartbeat

I rode a 883 low back to back with a S50 suzuki, the suzi was a better ride than the 883.
The girl who owned them both owned the 883 & then brought the suzi & sold the 883.
The 1200 nightster is a vast improvement over the 883 imho & if in the market for a good looking machine would be hard to pass up.

I'll stick with me sproties thanx...Spoken like a true ...... have ya tried riding something that feels like it wants to throw it's rods up into yr crutch but doesn't (often), yet ?
and there is one of the main reasons I am looking to change my bike.
but really the only 'negative' is the vibration, and that is just the awesomeness of the v-twin.
thats why I sent you a pm. Make me an offer I can't refuse :) ....and one my wife can't either lol
A wise man took my snotty, bad handling, old FXR out for the first time a few weeks back and if my memory recall is any good , his words were, "It's hard to describe, but it was more like being at an event than going for a ride" . Word has it, he has a few on his TM watchlist now.
Not saying it's you, but i'd take the 1200 out and try it (being a tall bugga) the skirtsta..... i mean 883 used to be lower back when i rode a 1200, not sure about now. Don't sound like all the hype about more power when ya kit an 883, is what your about, so it would be wise to try one just to feel (if any) the difference !
As for the classic looking 48, a mate just nabbed an old 69 off TM to add to his collection (one of only two in the country i believe) Now that is a cool looking bike !
Let's watch the first dork come in with the negative comments - who will it be?
Yeah fuckin dirty wollowing pigs of things !
I spent friggin hours yesterday ripping the forks down to fit emulators in em and then found i had progressives anyway (Yeah previous owner had it pretty well set up, but i thought id try these new fangled emulator thingies)
Then had to get all dirty and greasy/fluidy stripping the back brakes out to replace crap that had gunged up, just so i could do skids all the way to New Plymouth, so Mr RT can replace the bullshit shocks that just aint quite lasted the 20 yrs, jeeesus it grates me when shit dont last !
What's bloody next ?
Will i have to replace the clevebloc bushings in the swingarm to spherical bearings to get this pig to go around corners at the ton without trying to buck me off ? I think probably not !
But i just bloody might bwahahahaha !
Then maybe 2" overs in front so i gots me another 1/4 inch clearance under the frame (before i wear a bloody hole through it)
All this just so it's ready to ride in.......... What date is Mothers day racing at Manfeild ?

Took my mates 1200 out prior to riding the 883, yep it had more power, and probably slightly smoother. Forward controls which I didn't really like, hey but who knows, it might grow on me. The 883's mid controls felt much better for me. The feet forward thing seems to put a fair amount of pressure on my lower back. The mid controls are more comfortable for me. + the 1200 is a bit out of my price range, even the 883 is stretching it.
I don't care too much about the power, very rarely pillion anyone. Hell, I have been happy with the power on the DR. Wouldn't do more than 350-400ks in a day and that would be a rare day for me these days. The bigger concern would be the peanut tank.
It would be my every day bike. Work and back, and the odd ride on the weekend.

Harley should stick with it though, wouldn't be a Harley without a Vtwin throbber.
I dunno - I suspect if they made a massive torque thumper (say 800cc). It might actually be a good selling product.
Shake like a mother though......but thats all good in my books.

All the bikes I learned on and owned in the early days were like that, sinfull...although I have to say none of them did actually throw a rod. Me mate's bike did though - on Ruapuna one day...spread oil all over the entry into the S's...made for an interesting day after that.

Let's face it, whatever bike you ride, there's always some expert will tell you that it's crap. It's good to get sensible advice, but at the end of the day It's your money and your choice, so ride what you want and enjoy it. If you want to spray it flourescent pink and have a leopard skin seat as well, that's fine too!

I like naked bikes. All it comes down to. Less than a second to take the screen off the Roadie and I'm out in it, dog out the car window style.
Haven't researched it - Is the glide fitted with the 103 cube engine? There is a press bike doing the rounds I'll make sure I get a fang on it then too.

I unashamedly like the modern sports bikes. This is because I spent many hours all those years ago trying to develop something a bit like what we get to ride today. I like the technology - in frame and handling as well as in the engine department. The contrast with what I used to ride is so very obvious. I just love the level of development that has been achieved.
Having said that, it doesn't mean that I dislike other types of bike. I ride with people who have every sort of bike under the sun. Their choice is their choice, not mine. And my choice is mine, not theirs. Whatever rocks your boat...no point in getting hung up on what somebody else rides.

This is a classic! A girl with a 650 DR is reviewing a Sportster 883... First of all, u have to get the difference between a tractor and a bike. Than u have to hide u'r red-neck and try to ride a bike as a bike not a tractor. But, in the end, a trailer-trash is unable to go past it's urge to judge any bike as a tractor.
U go girl!

Well, aside from the one poster that seemed to miss the vibe of my original post, none of you will be surprised that I have sold the DR and plonked down the money for a baby harley.
If all goes to plan, I take possession on Tuesday. I am like a kid waiting for santa.
The bike will be coming up from Wellington and be delivered here to me on Tues.
Can't wait!
