I'm struggling with the issues surrounding members of parliament that commit these various breaches seem to just be demoted.

In the big bad world if you were to breach a company's rules and regs such as Wong has surely you would be forced to resign or even face criminal charges.

At the end of the day she has actually breached the rules of her perk, why knowing the rule is pretty simple do MP's that do run foul just get demoted but remain on the payroll.

You have a company car, you are allowed to drive it to and from work, as well as use at work, you take it to Hamilton (fuck knows why - hot chick) you are found out and dismissed.

Surely if a member of Parliament breaches the rules of their employment they should walk whats the bloody story.

I'm not just thinking of Patsy here it just seems that these guys are more and more living in lala land

I think they have been doing it forever...

One of my earliest political memories involved the family of a certain well known MP of the day grabbing a whole lot of land that was later taken into the Tongariro Power scheme...thereby making a "minor profit"...

The old saying was "give them an inch and they'll take a mile" and so many people get into high places and just rape and pillage the accounts and its not just MP's.

There's the Watsons and Hotchins and Rod Petrivic and all the other greedy finance company bastards. There seems to be no honesty at that level.

Perhaps that's why I don't have my 30 million Euro yacht parked in the harbour at Genoa, I'm too bloody honest.

p.s. where is Finn these days while his Government is doing this stuff?

If you or I do it, it's called Fraud, or "using a document for pecuniary advantage" and we are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

She'll just pay the money back and it'll be considered OK.

One law for them and fuck the rest of us.......

Unless I'm wrong (often am) ... She is STILL a member of the national party, she is STILL a Member of Parliament....

Just NOT a member of caucus....

With the pay-cut that comes with that ...

Muldoon wouldn't have layed down and got dragged over the coals for a few perks - he was a tough motherfucker who took all he could get and no one said a thing. Not like the pansy pollies these days.

It has been happening for long enough, by EACH party.

The sooner that an MP is ONLY permitted to travel ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS ONLY and when voted out of parliament by the public, their perks cease IMMEDIATELY... the better!
Their partners, wives, kids are NOT voted into office and are therefore NOT entitled to suck on the taxpayer's teat.

Agree he was a tough bastard but did he enrich himself by using his position?
And once he became leader, he certainly didn't allow anyone else too much leeway. I recall reading that on the first day of his new government, he asked for (and got) a signed, undated letter of resignation from everyone in his government.

I'm happy with that.

I hate Pansy since she got National to push through legislation that tried to make calling traditional Chinese medicine bullshit into some kind of libel offence.

Glad to see her (partly, at least) go.

(Someone at work once pinned up business cards of some accupuncture clinic on the notice board. Just (!) to provide balance I pinned up some take-away URL's to the quack watch web page on accupuncture. So this person then sticks up a notice pointing out this legislation with the comment "you know this is libel and you can be charged...". Fuck off. (I looked it up: the legislation allows a "personal opinion" to be expressed.))

Fuck off.

Y'know, I'm sure a homeopath would be able to help you with your anger issues.. :) J/k - but what's the name of act you're talking about? (TCM isn't all shit, btw, neither is all acupuncture).

Wong (and all other pollies that do the same) should be gone because this is fundamentally a dishonesty offence: claiming a perk when you are not entitled to it. In her case it sounds like it wasn't just once either.

I did search last night but couldn't find it. I did, back then, because this note helpfully had the number of the legislation so it was easy to google up. i.e. I'm sure it's real because I've seen it and read it, but I can't actually prove it to you right now. Sorry.

(My Father taught me "anger is an energy". And he'd never even heard of P.I.L. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejRal5xFWA4))

Yes it is.

Back to the OP's point.

Naaaaaaah. If a person got dismissed for that then the company was looking for an excuse to get rid of them. First offence would be, "Gas money please bro", from any reasonable employer. It's what I'd do. Followed up by, 'Don't do it again or you'll lose the privilege." Then and only then would a reasonable employer start getting the bigger stick out. Unless of course that borrowing the company car for personal use was outlined contractually as a firing offence.

We're talking about around $500 that she paid back. Most of you reading this have nicked more than that from your boss in pens, paper, 3/4 hour toilet breaks, 10 minutes every hour smoke breaks, and subtly arriving later and leaving earlier when needed.

Chris Carter certainly "stole" 10s, maybe 100s of thousands of dollars over his long career and he wouldn't have gone if he hadn't been such a monumental dick about the whole issue. If he'd said sorry he'd still be an MP. Probably wouldn't win his seat next election though and would have been demoted down the list.

Muldoon did abuse his position. It sounds nuts now but that Sierra he drove was a special import at a time when us "normal" folk simply weren't allowed to do that and it looked like a space ship compared to anything else on the road. It's why people drove 25 year old Ford Prefects in 1981.

Mate, I see your point but to be honest, we are her employers (indirectly so if that makes you feel better) and she has been voted into a position of trust by the local community. We are supposed to place our trust in these people so misuse of privaledge, no matter how minor or how perceived, is miss use.

I mean, I wish I had perks like that in my job. Now, I see your point about being warned, but an 'Honourable' member of parliament needs to take responsibility for whan they break cler and precise rules. Lets not fuck about with the PC 'I'm warning you' bullshit. This is an entrusted politician who took her position, THE POSITION NEW ZEALANDERS PLACED HER IN, and abused it.

She should be fucked off right out of it for being a lying theiving piggy politician scumbag.

However, I reckon that wanker JK slapped her over the noodle with a wet bus ticket to save face with an ever increasing aisian population, especially in Botany, who could account for votes, and also to avoid the inevitable 'racist' card being played.

Fucking PC riddled government with their own agendas, bastards make me wanna spew....:sick::sick:

Pollies are human too, and on the scale of MP excesses she's a long way down the list. That Tamihere bloke spent more on undies.

There's a cultural bias and motivation that I can REALLY understand that would have led to this cock up. For all that she's an example of the changing face of NZ's population and representative of our changing global relationships.

Yes indeed, and therefore needs to demonstrate that noone is outside the rules. You break them, you get punsihed. Race, creed, colour, religion, dont matter, you are an MP and thats that.

If we want to play the cultural differential as a cause, that then in turn allows any rule or law breaking to be blamed on culture and thus not the responsibility of the individual.

The UK has gone right down the fucking toilet for that very reason, not in NZ please
