A bit pricey but at least it's got a 135 deg FOV.
Much much better than the old ATC's

Ahh that may be the prob-too many splits in the tape. It senses the sellotape & won't go past it.

I use Easy Media Creator suite 10. I have both 8 and 10 on my system and it works well. The rendering does take up Computer power though and I have found it is a last thing to do, no disturbances and shut all other programmes down in the background...:)
I just have to get a fancy HD Camera now...

I agree.....Throw a useless gadget on the camera and increase the price. The Price I see on Trade me at the moment is $485, I think. The Hero HD is well worth the $400 approx for the almost HD version. I am happy with my Tachyon, works fine, but the microphone is really sensitive.....wind, bike, burp, fart...:) All seems to be picked up...

I using the Vista movie maker and it works fine, XP worked fine too. I tried a hole bunch a few years back and unless you wanted to spend a lot of time (most seemed to have a lot of trouble with aliasing) getting more advanced settings, Movie maker was free and easy. All I want to do is get rid of the crappy bits and compress down to a reasonable size.

That camera looks awesome

Vista's Windows Movie Maker is different to Windows Live Movie Maker that you get with Windows 7. Both reasonably intuitive to use, but the Windows Live version is much more unstable - especially with longer videos. You can download Vista's version to run on Windows 7, however it does not support the new Media Center video format.

I use Cyberlink power director 8 and have no problems but i have a new, very good laptop as the high def stuff takes a lot of power to run smoothly.
Also most of the high def vids are .MOV (H.264) format so a lot of the free software is not compatable.

The VIO POV 1.5 I have uses four batteries, I get over 6 hours recording to the battery life if I use high quality ones. The Eneloops I use are awesome, maybe 7 hours tops, longer than the life of the SD Card, (8Gb max)
I orderded an attachament for the back that replaces the batteries. I can now poer the camera from the battery direct with the spade adapters or use the cigarette lighter attachment. Both come with a nice spiral cable and it is long enough to have the camera on the bars or in the back of the jacket. :)
Battery life is a thing of the past. If I leave the bike, the unit unplugs, I then have to insert batteries if I want to film something away from the bike.
All of these attachments are compatible with the new 1.5HD when available, but for now the one I have is really awesome. :)

On a side note.....
I loaned the camera to the guys for their ride down south for three weeks. Day 2, I get a phone call....:shit:
"I can't get this thing to work properly" :)
Turns out it is really technical for a 'technophobe'........even with the instructions given two weeks prior to departure....:woohoo: I wonder if we will get any good footage? Fingers crossed....

I plan on mounting the cable, then running it up the side of the rear shrouds through to the seat, it will sit there, ready to plug in and out. Power on the go. It is fused and the power draw is low, much like the GPS unit on the battery too.

Obviously this is rather late, but I'd recommend Cinelerra (http://cinelerra.org/) if you're after a professional grade OSS video editing tool. I haven't gotten around to trying it myself since I almost never do any video editing, but a friend who is does a lot of video work uses it extensively, and he does some pretty awesome stuff including chroma keying and 3D anaglyph.

Never had much luck with Cinelerra. Blender works fine but is a bit over-blown for what I need and kdenlive is drag n drop and does the trimming, transitions, volume control, fade to black and titling I usually use.

I was trying a new mounting scheme for the Vio camera 1.5. Had it all set up on the indicator stalk and looking good, then....
The front wheel rotated and crushed the cable with the pins etc.....:angry2:Is there anyone out there that could replace the pins/plug and still retain the head unit. OR does anyone know of someone clever with video hardware? repairs...
The camera looks hard wired inside to the cable, otherwise maybe that could be replaced?
The unit has been discontinued but there are spare cameras around $199 USD! :shit:

Such a Piss off!

I think everyone should forget every other camera and just get the best well proven GOPRO HD2. Any kind of mounting taken care of, all you need is imagination, and at the cost of some of these cams that you guys are talking about the GoPro is a barg. GoPro have a free download of Cineform editing software, I personally use MS moviemaker with no problems on length of vid, and have been recommended Cyberlink Power director (havent had a chance to give this a go yet) and just to top things off, a very good forum site for GoPro users with any question answered and shown so very innovative mounts and camera angles.:Punk:

There is a flat lens that is available in glass and plastic, this is mainly for scuba diving as the light refraction lessens the definition, dont forget this cam is waterproof to 60m

The GoPro needs loop recording and a wireless remote.

Don't know about any loop recording but I guess that with the battery bacpac its really only good for about 4.5 hrs anyway, and a 32gb card is its limit ( dont know of anyone using a bigger card) , you could hard wire a mini usb power cable but as you said "no loop recording" but wireless remote is available in Feb and maybe that will be able to stream wireless to a bigger harddrive ruling out the need to loop record and save all footage.
The wireless backpack will let you see what the cam is viewing to your smartphone and wireless stream to any wireless device, allowing the control of 50 cams ( matrix slowmo rotation scenes )

No hardwiring, I want wireless. Hardwiring looses waterproofedness...

The wifi backpac means you can't use a 2nd battery but means you have a wireless remote so you don't need as much battery life.

16Gb of storage is plenty for 720p @ 25fps and almost 5 hrs of footage.

They maybe bigger than some cams out there, but I can testify to their ability to survive crashes ( admit to only crashing on my MTB) and the LCD backpac is a good viewer for cam angle and reviewing footage after the aforementioned crash!
The remote that will be available will wireless stream to multiple devices such as the TV , your mates smart phone or even stream to the cloud via your smartphone mobile internet so everyone can see your mishaps:niceone:
yet to be proven, though all theory until they release this wireless remote bacpac:msn-wink:
Yes I admit to being bias with Gopro, tried a few cams now and the possibilities of mounting the cam to absolutely anything and its robustness has convinced me so.:niceone:

They'll survive alright but get them snagged on some blackberry or creeper and they'll be pointing at the sky until the next time you stop and take your helmet off.

Or even cause a crash when they snag if mounted on the top of the helmet.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life.

The Hero 3 Black does loop recording and has wifi for the remote built in.

The wifi back/remote for the Hero 1 & 2 sucks the battery dry at the same rate paused as recording so you have to hit the stop button between good bits.

It can take 10-30 secs for it to pick the camera back up again when starting it again, but I use that time to get a drink before attempting whatever was worth recording...

The Black 3 also sucks the battery dry fast with wifi. I don't even use my remote as I can't even get 50 mins record time from a fully charged battery without the remote. I have to resort to carrying numerous spare and charged batteries.

Regarding photo quality from the Black 3, ok to fairly average. It struggles in high light contrasting situations and often suffers from lens flare. In the following video I took all the still photos (and video) with the Black 3

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nNYa1_OBa90" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Overall it takes generally good video in most settings, just dismally disappointed to go through so much screwing around and wait so long to for the continually extended release date of the Black Edition, pay the better part of $900 for the camera, batteries, accessories etc only to find that they have excessively reduced the weight and size to the detriment of the battery life. Fine for some sports/hobbies/sex tapes :) but 50 mins is not ideal for adventure riding.

NordieBoy
13th January 2016, 18:32
Well, I've got my 2nd hand Hero2...

So now it's...
1. HD Hero
2. HD Hero2
3. Contour Roam HD
4. Contour GPS

and for testing porpoises only...
5. Hero 4 (not silver, white, black, session, + or anything else)

The Hero2 is much better in low light than the original and uses the WiFi back/remote better.
The Hero 4 however is not removable from it's case, no wifi, no replaceable battery, 720p 50fps or 1080p 25 fps and takes some quite good footage.
I like the huge reduction in fisheye...
318766

RRP about $250 and it goes quite well.
I want 720p 25fps though.
Although, as the battery is only good for 2:30 and 720p 50fps fits about 2:30 on a 16gb card, that's not much of an issue.
