That ad gives the impression the reduced road toll is mostly to do with the huge advertising campaign.
Makes no mention of the introduction of ABS brakes, airbags, better crumple zones, seatbelt improvements, etc. Or changes in road rules, speed limits, driver training. Law changes with regards to drink driving, police attitude changes with regards to drink driving.
I'm also pretty sure the motorcycle ad with the yellow bike was an English one, too...
What bollocks.
Yes the ads have had an effect. Yes, some of the ads are very good. But the ads are as much a reflection of the change in attitude than a cause of it. I'm extremly cynical of emotional advertising as an effective strategy for large issues such as this.

probably as effective as the photos on cigarette packets ...

I disagree. I think there is much more of an "it won't happen to me" attitude with regards to drink driving/speeding than with smoking. Hence people can see the ad and say "yeah well it happens to muppets but won't happen to me, because I'm better than that" - whereas noone is under the illusion that whether or not you catch cancer from smoking is related somehow to skill or experience. The smokers I know are much more realistic about the consequences than people I've met who've driven drunk. I think that makes the smoking ads more effective, because there is the aspect of inevitibility, and a completely different mindset from the start.

I thought it was a great ad, but unfortunately that's "preaching to the converted"
Anyone touched by that ad probably already thinks about these things; others who watch it will still think "it'll never happen to me (or anyone I care about)".

To date .... the mind-set seems to be, in regards to smoking and drink driving ... that only the smoker or drink driver will get hurt/write off their car/big fine/ lose their licence ... no thought at all to anybody else ... that could get/be involved at the same time.

If that add causes 1 person in 100 that see's that add ... to stop and think ... that 1, may have saved a life. If only their own ...

I'm sure if the recidivist drunk drive killer who murdered the women south of KeriKeri had been able to watch that in prison in the days before he was released (I think he had been out about 10 days) he would not have consumed the wine from the cask as was found in the vehicle, or at least not driven whilst indulging his demons.
These advertisements do not get the message through to those that need to see and take the message on board.
About 15 yrs ago I had the misfortune to attend a party with a bunch of our lower IQ'ed members of society where the topic of conversation was the hosts sons upcoming attendance in court for his third DIC at the age of 22, the whole conversation was around the fact that the NorthShore court had a judge with a reputation of being tough on drunk driving and a couple that would believe the bullshit and dish out lighter sentences and whether this time he would be lucky to get the right judge.
The point to the above, until we serve up sentences harsh enough to deter we will have this issue, remove the weapon, crush it, sell it what ever, without concern as to who owns and facilitates the crime.

The TAC crowd do fantastic ad campaigns, unfortunately as PB says, often preaching to the converted, but maybe they're used in educational programs too.
This campaign is good for the young'uns, true story on the ripple effect - 19 year old crashed doing 160 in an 80 zone:

This youtube is quite intense - shows how quick things can happen: Actually I think this is the edited version, can't seem to find the original.

Maybe they should be showing these to the anyone sitting thier licence. I am a firm beiliever of shock value.
I saw a horrific accident way back when i was in my teens where three guys were killed in a small ute after running under a parked truck. Best education i ever got, it has stopped me driving while under the influence on many occasions.
My biggest issure is the innocent that suffer as a result of bad decisions

I agree with playing it when you sit your licence or if you have been caught drink driving. BUT not just the one add. Play as many as you can get. When I sat my full motorbike licence I did it through a safety course in Hamilton and we got shown some pictures of what happens when you don’t wear all the gear all the time. I could handle a few, I was good for most but after the 30th or 40th picture I was starting to get the message :shit:. It wasn’t that I was trying to be tough it was just I have seen a few gory photos and didn’t think too much of them but that many you can’t ignore. A good reminder later on was a girl who fell off the back of a bike and lost half her skin. Not a sight I can forget quickly anymore.
