A bike for a big learner?

Hello everyone.

I only just got my learners a couple of weeks ago and I'm in the process of hunting for a 250 to call my own. Me being 6'3" the smaller bikes are. . .well, small.
I've tested the Suzuki VL250 cruiser, Honda Magna, Yamaha Virago and the Hyosung GT250Efi. I have to admit, I'm not much of a sport bike fan but I had the most fun on the Hyosung. It was a good height and surprisingly comfortable. But since it's the 2010 model, the price tag is a little out of my reach.
I have about $4000 to play with so I'm looking at the Hyosung 2005 GT250 Comet. Does anyone have any experience with ongoing maintenance on this bike? Advice for and against are most welcome. Suggestions on other bikes are welcome too. Cheers.

Unfortunately you're fairly limited for choice. The Comet seems to have a fairly good rep, not as popular as the sports model which I think is still NZ's biggest selling sports bike. Haven't got personal experience but I'm sure plenty of people have.

From when I asked the same question.

I would try for an exemption myself, I got it and Im 6'2.
Enabled me to get a Suzuki Savage 650 for a first bike. After I had gained confidance I moved up to a 400cc sports bike which was on the list.
(IFRC the Hyosung 650's are on the list too...)

To apply for the exemption is only like $20 so is worth trying for...

I got a bike to match my ball size, rather than height.
RG150. Sure I had to haunch over it like a leviathan......but it was fun.

But have you considered a road legal trail bike - they are the best for tall fella's like us....and just as fast as all those bikes you mentioned.

DR250 or similar would suit you perfect.

DR250 = excitement.

VL250 looks "cooler" and more comfy, good first one I reckon if you;re into cruisers.

I had a 2007 GT250R, only things wrong were shitty chain and soft brakepads.

replace these and it's primo.

The 2007 models and older had problems with the cam chain tensioners but they should have all been fixed under warranty.

A "High" km 2008 should be around 4000 and by High I mean 20-30 000 kms, so not that high

Il have to agree with the hyosung gt250r, its a good bike but the brakes are crap.
Its awsum when these are replaced.

if you can't get an exemption for your height/size, I'd go for a trail bike, maybe an XR or DR 250

Not sure if it is helpful, but I am a 6"1 female and I just got my first bike. Sh eis a Honda VTR 250. I find her big enough to ride comfortably. You are quite upright, but there is enough room for my legs..... Hope that helps?
I was told in a shop the Hyosung were good bikes, but you must not leave them out in the rain. So if you use it to commute then make sure it is stored under cover while you work! If you leave them out in the rain they deteriorate quickly!

Oh and I wouldn't even go near a Hyo pre-07.

With $4000 you could pick up a pretty decent GT250R or GT depending on your taste.

Oh and slap a decent exhaust on it and they sound like a thou.

I'm about as tall as the OP and my MC19 is big enough to be quite comfortable.
