Yeah right!

http://tvnz.co.nz/technology-news/tv-ad-volume-issue-fixed-christmas-3899413?ref=rss

Am i the only one who thinks some ads are consistently louder than others? This technology may help but im pretty sure some ads blast out of your TV no matter how quiet or loud the previous one was.

TV adverts are 5% to 10% louder and done on purpose... we use to record adtverts 5% louder than other programs and docos we made... has something to do with marketing and subliminal etc

"subliminal etc"?

I'd like to take that apart but I'm not quite sure how. I do know I'm going to use it one day though.

I heard that if you download your tv programmes from a torrent that you don't get adverts. Maybe the TV stations are trying to drive people away?

I think compression is the problem in the first place.
My understanding is that there is a guideline on how 'loud' an ad can be. Natural sound which has peaks and lows resulting in a mean noise level below the (allowable)peak. By compressing the highs down onto the lows they can raise the mean much closer to the allowable level.
It isn't louder per se but because there is no respite it blasts you.

The older I get the more cynical I become of all marketting/advertising. I realise that the research done makes it difficult to not be affected by or to respond to it. However, when ads annoy me I consciously avoid the product.

The worst are the ads promoting the 'News'
Every big story! Getting the issues! Truth now!

Fuck off

Trying to improve ratings so we can sell advertising so you can be pressured to buy hideously misrepresented product.

There, thats more like the truth and I didn't need to shout.

Sod watching TV adverts. Record programme and then play back+skip forward past the ads. Great feature on your DVD units, Mr Panasonic!

What annoys me is that C4 seems to be permanently compressed at maximum volume. Every other channel is kinda similar but whenever I flick over to C4 I also have to turn down the volume.

I guess they're more EXTREME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We have been introducing it since last month. It is quite complex to get the balance right across all channels."

Its called a ramp/fade function.
Quite simple

Program ends
Fade into the advert from a volume of 0
Fade out of the advert to a volume of 0
Program continues

Only been around for about 100 years.
Wheres my bullshit bell

Being hard of hearing (read deaf) I have to have the volume up on everything!

Consequence is that all the volume controls are warn out due to having to turn it down when the "loud" advertising comes on! :shit:

I think it is just bullshit having the advertising on so loud on radio and TV but there you go!

I have also heard that explanation. So I hooked an oscilliscope up to the TV speakers to check. Guess what .... The peaks on the ads were much higher than the peaks on the normal programme. So I figure that means the ads are louder per se.

The mute button is never far from reach in our house. What I've noticed is that he biggest culprit for annoyingly loud ads are Harvey Norman.

If I had a TV advertising budget I'd refuse to buy time following any Harvey Norman ad on the basis that by then most viewers would have already hit the mute button.

Ads are compressed, the volume of an ad is boosted, but has a very narrow dynamic range. At any fixed volume setting, the movie you're watching will have both quieter and louder components than the ads that break it up. I think you actually mean audio normalization.

There is a simple solution - just boycott those you don't like

I absolutely refuse to step in the door of Rebel Sport, Bond & Bond and Noel Leeming beacuse of their 'shouting' ads

One day, eventually, the message might get through.

Not turning on the TV helps too...

Must be over 10 years since we've visited a HN store, solely because of the ad's, we're not deaf and neither are we stupid.

Evidently their demographic target is the opposite. Must be more stupid people out there than I thought ...

And hearing impaired.

There's quite a few adverts which cross the line, but at the moment by far the worst is Dick Smith - they resort to full on SHOUTING. From my point of view it's counter-productive and offensive.

It is rather perplexing why Dick Smith is using The Mad Butcher in their commercials.
I keep expecting to see a "meat pack with every TV sold", but it never gets to that point. Quite odd.

Neither will I, shout at me and I simply won't buy at your store anymore. Ever. ( Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, Mad Butcher etc take note)

I wonder why these retailers spend so much money on advertising without realising how much it pisses people off, potential clients et al.

Commercial radio is the same, some of the talkback radio is good but, as soon as the inane adverts come on it's mute button, switch off or, change to another station.

Thanks for pissing me off and reminding me who I should avoid to buy from is how I look at it.

They must be gunning for the stupid people, TV3 at 7pm now is a prime example

I don't think he has any financial interest in the company anymore, aside from as a 'brand' for their advertising - so he's more or less a free agent and can work for whoever he likes; I agree with you as far as the association with Dick Smith is concerned though, doesn't work for me either.

The funny thing about adverts that irritate you, is that when you need to buy something which the company stocks - you think of that company (despite being annoyed by their advert).
