Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have just scored an old SL125 as a project bike and at the mo it is complete so I would like to get running so I can evaluate it properly before i strip it down. The battery is long gone but to start it should I put a resistor or something across the terminals to avoid fritzing the charging system? No point buying a new batt for a project I am not ready to even start yet.

From the charging system is a number of coloured wires ... find the black one and connect it directly to the coil. This SHOULD give spark at the plugs (if points are set correctly) Tape battery terminals to stop a possible short. That wire to the coil can be used as a kill switch if it is earthed ... (ie connected to a kill switch or just able to be earthed at will by the rider by a bare wire at / on the handle bars)
