Hey people
My name is Darrin, im from the deep south and I been riding bikes for about the last 7 years, i started off on an RG50 (which I ended up bucket racing), then a couple of GN250s (im sure a few of you have been there lol), a few MX bikes and now I have an 87 FZR400.
I bought this bike off off my cousin who had converted it back to road after it was used as a race bike. Now you would think after a few years of being around bikes i would no a thing or two about them, but I spent most of my time and money on modifying jap performance cars, drifting and drag racing.
So i was wondering if someone who knows these bike could possibly tell me what aftermarket parts I might have on it, Ive had a ride on a standard one before but my one has amazing power, and very smooth delivery and handling. I know I have an aftermarket exhaust, brakes, fuel tank and I presume the pod filters on each cylinder are not factory. The pillion seat and pegs are gone too. It has new sprockets and O-ring chain, has DUNLOP RIDEER rear and DUNLOP SPORTSMAX front tires, I have been told the RIDEER is an awesome tire but not worth the money just for road use when it comes replacement time (any comments??).
Anyway i am trying to attach a pic with this post, hope it works an hope someone can help me out with some info.
Thanks all
Cheers
Darrin

Welcome to K.B DemonFZR. Can't comment on your bike (re: questions) except to ask, is that a chequered flag paint job?
Not seen that before. :wavey:

Modifying jap cars? Drifting? Drag racing???? Ye gods, who let the boyracer in??? Just kidding mate, welcome to KB. :niceone:
Yep, pod filters are not standard (would have originally had an airbox). Guessing it will have been re-jetted to suit the filters.
It may have a full aftermarket exhaust system- the easiest way to check is to look underneath where it goes from four/two into 1- if theres not a small pulley with cables coming off it or a shaft poking out then the EXUP valve is gone, so it's had a full system put on it. Just looking at the pic I'd say the old system ahs been binned- it loos like it's all stainless.

yeah dude, it is! Ex race bike, so i figured the paint job should reflect that

il admit, i was a boy racer, then i turned into what i call a performance vehicle enthusiast lol. Anyway your right about the exhaust, its completely aftermarket, theres no cables or anything.

If it has an aftermarket exhaust with the EXUP ripped off, and pod filters, then it also will have completely rejetted carbs.
Check the CDI - it may still be the original Hitachi one.
Brakes look standard the original 297mm rotors with Sumitomo calipers.
Don't look like braided lines but hard to tell.
AFAIK that seat assembly was standard on the FZR400R.
You may or may not have aftermarket springs in the front forks and/or valve emulators (a special insert which emulates damping rebound systems).
What's the shock? Standard? If raced, it may have been changed.
Anyway, :whocares:. Just enjoy your ride. Welcome to KB

forgive my ignorance but where is the cdi?
Have done some research, the exhaust was in fact made by the guy that converted it back to a road bike, and the guts are blown out of it so its time for a new one (anyone no where i can get an aftermarket one?)
Did the standard engine in the 87 rev to 14000? Its not the original engine and im wondering if its not out of a later model bike?!? How would I no?

1: Cdi should be a black box under the seat.
2: Neptune exhausts are great after markets
3: Not sure about rev's, proberbly
4: Check the engine block for engine numbers.

ok the CDI is still the factory Hitachi one, should I upgrade this? Where would I find one of these Neptune exhausts?
Finally got rid of those pink wheels, bike is now metallic grey/silver with blue details and wheels, looks a hell of a lot better, just waiting on my sticker kit to be made.
Thanks for all the info too guys, its really helping me out. I want to get all these mechanical things sorted out and get some idea of the power output/performance. I believe the factory genesis puts out 60hp and a 1/4 time of 12.7 @ 102mph, sorta hoping to improve on both substantially!
I want this thing to be my weekend toy and my strip bike too, dont have a car to put down the strip anymore, but i figure i can have just as much fun for half the price and much better performance from the bike.
Cheers

You'll prob find those figs for power are at the crank - around 40-50 at the wheel.
With good plugs, good exhaust and rejetted carbs the bike has a vast improvement on hp.
Factory CDI is ok on the FZR's but if it fucks out dont get another one - you can get fairly reasonbly priced better versions of similar things.
14K is reasonable for a standard fzr 12-14 range i typ. for most 400's.
The way to can tell if a 400 has had the work done properly is to see if it rides below idle, and if you can let the clutch out below say 2K. All the non modified 400/4's ive ridden seem to stall if you let it out below 3.
Good to see another 400 out there about to deal it

dunlop GPR70's have "rideer" on them. As far as I know they are usually used as track tyres, maybe a bit soft for the road unless you can afford to keep replacing them.

HEy dude. Has it got knobs on the top of the forks? Its a bit hard to make it out on the pic you posted but it is possable it is a FZR400SP. They were substantially different to the standard ones. Had different front forks, rear swingarm, rear shock (SP has a remote resivoir), brakes, clutch, gearbox, crank, rods, pistons, carbs, ignition etc. Good on ya if ya have managed to get one. DO you know the race history (like who owned it?). Post a few close up pics of the shock and forks and i will let ya know.
