Should have got a bike years ago

I went for my first ride on the open road yesterday, about 20km on SH23 near raglan and about 30km on some backroads. Was going a bit slower than I would have gone in my car due to my lack of experience on the bike, but still had a lot of fun. It feels twice as fast despite actually being 5-10kmh slower. Looks like my Xbox and PS3 won't get much use now. :)

Hey Welcome aboard the mad house. I said exactly the same thing. "Why the hell didn't I do this sooner?" Well I'm making up for lost time so ride everyday. It can become very addictive. Just continue the way you started. Ride within your comfort zone and you can't go wrong. You don't need to push the envelope to have fun.
And to be honest, at 21, having driven a cage for a while, you will appreciate and respect 2 wheels much more. You should have by now gained enough insight into how thinking your invincible can come back to bite you. Just get out there and enjoy.

I'll second that one!! the addiction will never be broken and good onya as above for starting slow. even when you get up to speed on the open road use track days to test the boundaries. The open road aint no place for rocketship tactics regardless of what a lot of people do or say.

Peer pressure and ego's will kill ya. ride to your own ability.

Ive had new tyres on the duc for two months now that are still virgin. I'm almost reduced to tears every night as I wait for a lower fairing to come back from paint protection after painting. Addiction to the vee twin:facepalm:

At 21, you have years ahead of you. If you started when you were 15, you probably would have been way more keen to show off to your mates and potentially phuck yourself up baldy. Obviously everyone is different, but now at 21 the maturity you will/should have will save your ass as you learn.

Just wait till your on your full and every bike you see will be obtainable (if your pockets are deep enough that is).

Hey cool to hear you're loving it! I think starting to ride slightly later is a good thing, I started at 21yrs on my 250, had a short break and didn't get a bigger bike till 23 which I'm glad off, in that short time I settled down a bit and I know I would have pushed the bike a little bit too hard only a year or two earlier.

Once you get the hang of it, bikes will feel as if they are a lot slower than cars at the same speeds .... like, 120 klicks in a car you now your moving ... on a bike it's a nice cruise ...

Agree with banditbandit. I feel I'm going a bit faster in a car than on a bike. I guess that's cos bikes become more stable at higher speeds

Agree it's not, it's starting "slightly later" as I said, 6 years later than could have, and the maturity level of a 15yr old and a 21yr old "should" hopefully be quite significantly different, I quote "should" be. I wouldn't have trusted myself on a full license and a 600cc sports bike at the age of 16 which could legally happen.

And yes you would expect a bike to feel faster than a car with all the wind, being on two wheels with no protection cage but it does feel a lot slower after awhile. It's quite easy to creep from 100 to 120 and feel like you're only doing around a 100km. The bike does get more stable at higher speeds and I think also if you're on a high hp low kg bike the ease of increasing to a higher speed in a second also makes low speed feel low...

I have to agree here - I used to own an Audi A4 and was massively surprised with how smooth it was whenever I was 'speeding'.. Often find myself going too fast yet feels so slow... Mind you, only had it for say 3 months before getting my current bike :) Best call ever!
