View Full Version : Who uses the zip to join their textile riding jacket/pants together?

I have a set of dri-rider textile gear, the pants have a zip along the back but the jacket doesn't so I was wondering who uses the zip feature and it is worth getting one put in my jacket to join the two?

Personal choice I guess.
I zip my pants and jacket together (my cordura and my leathers both have this feature).
Two reasons, it is warmer, and if I go for a slide they are not going to part company leaving me with gravel rash across my back.

always, but agree it's personal. I'd say the majority of people would if they had the zip. I always buy with a zip but if it didn't have one, and the jacket was a snug fit, I suppose I wouldn't worry about it too much. It'd be a different story if the jacket was on the lose side.

Had never done so, then the other weekend had someone zip it for me....hmm, warmer, will save the back skin should the off occur but I did feel like I was being compacted and choked....will take some getting used to but I personally think it's brilliant. Safety first and foremost!

Its not for the warmth as I don't get cold riding more so to stop the jacket riding up if I had a spill.
Can anyone recommend someone in Wellington to put a zip on the jacket for me?

I never do my zip up.
Didn't make a difference when I had an off in 08 either. Good quality gear made a huge difference. Shoei helmet saved my life.

Do it up, if youre sliding feet first you will wish you had as you feel the heat building up , this happens just as it starts to take you skin off and griding your spinal cord to coarse bone chip.

I zip.
Miss it when I am wearing my textiles that don't zip together.
Zip when its hot
Zip when its cold
Feels weird if I haven't zipped. So much so, I usually pull over, zip up and carry on.

Always zipped, and any new gear I buy must have the joining zip.
Easy way to increase protection to my way of thinking

Never have with my cordura, but until my off I did zip my leathers together. (The day of my crash I wasn't wearing my leather pants...) After the crash i couldn't wear them zipped together because the broken collarbone prevented me from wriggling and squiggling into the whole set up. Tbh, I haven't zipped since, but certainly will once the weather starts to get cold again. Must check if I'm still able to wiggle into it with them joined.....I think I've gotten a bit fatter since then so, fingers crossed, and legs too!

So (sew?) would it be good to have a big-arse zip linking my jacket and pants? (both leather)

uh... this may sound revolutionary, but have you considered putting both on, THEN zipping them together? :sunny:

I had a stretch panel put inside my jacket which zips to the trousers, less drafty and you stay warmer

:sick::puke: and after I had eaten as well....
I zip up, either leathers or Coudura, just feel a bit safer knowing it will not ride up and well like Quasievil said

...a warm cup of cocoa is all one needs before setting out on a drafty journey...and one on return...with or without your favourite tipple....and riding really , really slowly goes a long way to alleviating any form of........ uncomfortable rash...

Never tried zipping up
Mainly because I couldn't get around that far :gob:

Generally I've always had someone else zip me up! With the old collar bone any excessive moving and twisting of my arms was impossible (not impossible enough for me to not ride mind you...) Will give it a go, and see if I can be a big girl and dress myself from now on. :o

I noticed for the first time yesterday that the Hampdon Downs staff were checking my two piece leathers were zipped together before each session.
Having seen the damage the track surface does to cow skin I'm not surprised.

My jacket has a zip, but my pants don't. I've been meaning to have a zip put into my pants for ages. I think id feel safer if I could zip them together. If you have the option to make yourself safer, why not do it?

I would if I could. Thus far not motivated enough to get the trousers modified to accept the jacket.
Any ideas in ChCh as to who?

I've always been a zip up fan. Had an off some years ago and that left some nasty gravel rash on the back of my jacket were it joins my pants. Felt at the time it could have been rather nasty if i had the zip undone. Not sure if it makes it warmer but it certainly helps keep ya skin on.
Plus the fact that i am all grown up now too PB.:innocent:

I just took my pants to a seamstress to see if they could attach a zip to them. $40! If and only if they can find a zip that fits. Does this seem a bit excessive to you guys? Ill pay it cos my back skin is worth more than $40, but surely it cant cost that much to find and attach a zip.

I always use myn, although it's a full zip around in my leathers creating a one piece but I feel so much more confident knowing I'm all snug in a suit rather than the thought it could slide up giving hip/back rash if I fall.
Also nice knowing no crack is showing...

Nope, sounds reasonable (and I've had HEAPS of leather repairs done).
As for the zipping the gear together, I always do it when I'm travelling on the opne road, and only sometimes on my commute. Makes no sense if I think about it (like I do the same with wearing a back protector) as ALL my bins have been around town.
BTW: if zipping them together makes the neck of the jacket too tight, or your gear uncomfy, then the zip needs relocating, or joining on with somewhat stretchy fabric.

Always zip mine up. Mainly to avoid leaving bits of back on the tarmac but also cause I was a Fat Bastard a few months back and now the kgs are slipping off (diet) my bloody troosers won't stay up .

I do and I do not. It depends on the weather. Hot, then no zip up. Cool or wet its the zipper for sure!

I zip my leathers (or get someone to do it for me, being shortass/busty = 'tard sometimes) and mostly zip my cordura, I would like to say always, but mostly is true :innocent:
I wouldn't wear a shorter style jacket that didn't zip to my pants - my cordura jacket sits at the top of my thighs.
