I'm entering in the beach races this year which are held at Rabbit Island...on the beach.
Here's the entry form.
http://www.sportsground.co.nz/files/Site/130/64/Pdf/091130203805HIPEXFVB.pdf
IIt will cost approx $75 for entry & day license.
I went & had a looksie last year with the Nads crew & it looked like heaps of fun.
I'll be riding Gonzo & hopefully there'll be some others on adv bikes so we can make up an unofficial class.
For those not racing pit crew would always be welcome - bring ear plugs tho - it gets bloody noisy out there.

Questions:
where do I get a tether kill switch?
What riding gear is required, e.g. chest protectors etc.?
Do lights (glass) need to be removed?
How strict is the scrutineering of bikes these days?
But yeah I'm keen:yes:

where do I get a tether kill switch? - Motorbike shop.
What riding gear is required, e.g. chest protectors etc.? - They usually just specify long sleeves. But wear armour as you'll be doing highish speeds.
Do lights (glass) need to be removed? - Nope.
How strict is the scrutineering of bikes these days? - If the brakes work then you'll probably be fine.

Hope ya all like sand in every orifice. Wear a face mask, cos you will be roosted by someone, that shit hurts at 100+ kmph.
Duct tape over any glass, or any other bike surface you value, it will get sandblasted.
Make sure air filter has a perfect seal, otherwise hungry carbs love gobbling all that sand up.
Run a dry chain too, otherwise sand sticks to chain lube and turns into a nice grinding paste.
Steering dampers are a nice have, otherwise, try and ride relaxed, hang on and try not to let the head shake bother you. :corn:
All the wheel tracks in the sand make the track rutted and corrugated. The first runs of the day are the only ones who get a nice, hard, clean track, and the corners always cut up the worst. Talk to WW, he's got race pedigree there.
Silicon spray the bike real well, salt just loves any metal it can get hold of.

Aaaaaand you're gonna be there? I'd hate to think the sultan of clean won't race for fear of getting his bike dirty:shutup:

Nope, I won't be there. Sorry but beach racing in a straight line just doesn't spin my wheels.
I don't mind dirt either, but when I only get out once a fortnight, I gotta do something with my non ride time, so my lover gets a good rub down in the man cave.
2 KLR's in front?????? Bahahahahahaha- gasp- hahahahaha!
BTW, what class are you wanting to run in? MX3 Open?
Padmei
28th November 2010, 20:33
yeah I think thats all that I would fit into.
I appreciate what you're saying about racing in a straight line but I figure it'll be the easiest way I can say I've raced motorbies in my time to my mokopuna with a straight face.
Just gotta figure out the best way to get round that cone without washing the front out.

I actually think that it will be a wee bit more harder than it would seem, and the fact that there will be a whole lot of other bikes in very close proximity going quite fast will make it very exciting.
Even more exciting will be riding a bike that isn't really the greatest handling piece of kit.
Don't care what class i'm in, just wanna scare myself a few times.:shit:

Jesus Colin, get off your high horse.
With your permission, is it okay if I don’t always ride on the weekends at NMCC events or with other KB’ers? :violin:
Shiftwork and a 20 month old daughter tend to dominate my weekends these days, so I choose to ride midweek either solo or with other shiftworkers.
And the race/event calendar doesn’t normally cater for us shiftworkers does it? If I want to go fast in a straight line, I’d rather ride the Hakataramea.

If I want to go fast in a straight line, I’d rather ride the Hakataramea. The Haka doesn't have sandy hairpins every 800m...
Scrutineering-wise, they are getting tough on helmets now. See IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING HELMETS (http://mnz.co.nz/newsDetail.aspx?SectionID=29&ArticleID=34397) (Del's an NMCC bloke). The helmet has to have a standards compliance marking (not just a marketing badge on the outside) that includes the build date, as there is a 5 year cutoff. It will also face more scrutiny if it's looking used & abused. No flip-fronts, either.
They also might want sidestands (centrestands?) removed, and plain water run in the cooling system. Need to check those requirements.
Physically the toughest thing is the spray from the other bikes in front of you at full throttle. Sand, shell fragments, rocks/sticks/etc and even seawater spray hurts like a mofo. Most bike gear doesn't protect the inside of your arms very well.
See MANUAL OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT (http://mnz.co.nz/competitionrules.aspx) for the full MNZ rules. Club events aren't so strict except on the safety aspects.

Hmmmm I wonder if you can enter 2 bikes for the price of one?One class per entry form and entry fee.
So you could enter in MX3 Open and race either bike, presumably.
Not sure how competive a 400 will be against 650's. What sort of tyres do you run ?. Ive heard smoother tyres are quicker on the sand. The DR-Z400 often is allowed to enter midbore because it's simply not competitive with the 450cc MX/enduro bikes. And/or runs as a separate class within another race.
Tyre-wise I ran Michelin S12s last time, but given that the bikes wheelspin all the way, with the big heavy beastie I'll probably use Shinko 540s. I don't think it matters too much for competitors in this forum anyway!
is it best to corner wide or tight?Yes, it is.
Also search youtube for "gisbourne beach races 2008" for more of a speedway style of attack.

I have been thinking about this and I have some questions.
how much shit should i take off my bike?
How do I know whether I need a normally open or a normally closed tether switch?
Who has a bike trailer ? I could possibly score one for the weekend if anyone wants a lift. I will check this week
Is the track only 800 metres long?
Will I fall off?

I just got my thether switch from Filco- I hope Chae asked the techs cos he gave me one off the shelf after I called beforehand. I have since lost it:facepalm: Just wire it inline with the existing kill switch on the bars.
Looking at all the bits of electrics hanging out the front of my bike I might have to wrap them in plastic bags & tape them up. Fcuk what a cool look that'll be...
I was thinking about the races today as I was riding like a God. I was attempting to back it in to some corners & while not quite there got pretty ok at throttle control to bring the rear wheel back around (still I spose that's the easy part- being committed to keeping the throttle pinned I think must be the key) My rear is rooted so having the rear squirming under power is getting me used to the sand.
I have a fresh new T63 & 606front at city m/cs. I won't put them on till the day before (or even the morning for real race simulation pressure)
Also got a new handlebar coming (yeah I know you'll all be disappointed) I'm worried that scutineering will hilite the bends & ...ahem ...crack
I was thinking about extra protection like borowing kneebraces or neck brace. I'm not sure if they'll be necessary for that kind of straightline flat racing but unsure what others where. I've got my pressure suit which is strangely comforting to wear.
I'm looking forward to it.

How do I know whether I need a normally open or a normally closed tether switch?Either can be made to work, but normally closed would probably be your best bet.
2-strokes (and/or off-road 4t) tend to have normally-open, push-to-kill short-to-earth kill buttons. So a normally-open tether kill can be used in place of or in parallel with it.
4-stroke road bikes tend to have normally closed, switchable short-to-earth run buttons. Put a normally-closed tether kill in serial with it.
Doing it the above way, ie augmenting the existing system, should not cause any issues with ignition computers. Another way is to put a normally-open in parallel with the coil input, or a normally closed in series with it.
I'm trailering to the event because I want to run good tyres, not that road-legal shite.

Dunno what the surface will be like at Nelson, but at the Burt, as the 690 was lofting the front wheel over the mounds in the sand at about 150km/h, & headshaking violently, it occurred to me that maybe balancing the front knobby might have been a good idea :shit:

It will definitely be interesting to see how the big beast/s behave. I'd be curious to see if, due to wheelspin, they'll hit top speed sooner (and lower) than on the tar.
Take along a few different sprockets if you have them, so you can experiment. You may want to gear up if you are redlining in top, or gear down if you can't.

I reckon I'd max out easily at 145 -150 by halfway down the straight. The pick up is a lot better after the mods. I was keen on having a drag race from standing start along Anatori beach just to see how the different bikes compared but everyone looked meekly away.

Apart from lowering or increasing tyre pressure & getting a steering damper what else could you do? Slow the rebound right down?Lengthen the wheelbase & rake out the forks: remove rear spring preload to make the rear squat, lower the fork tubes down the triple clamps as far as possible, add links to the chain to get the rear axle sitting as far back in the swingarm as the adjusters allow. Replace floppy high front mudguard with low firm one - or shorty supermoto one.
As far as suspension damping goes, I'll have to consult my notes (and Colliedog - he made dramatic improvements to Wazza's G450X last year) and get back to you.

MattsDakar and I had a drag on hard pack gravel with a loose sandy top over the weekend. From the GPS on my 950 I got two segments of interest. I reckon that Matt on his XR650R wasn't far behind.
Length 54 m Time 0:00:03 Average Speed 65 km/h
Length 59 m Time 0:00:02 Average Speed 106 km/h
It seems to me that your likely to be well over 100kph in 5 sec and will only have travelled about 100m. I'm sure somebody can work out the accel rates from this but I can't be naffed. I had a a half worn E07 and was spinning it up for most of that. Matt had a new E07 and was also spinning for a fair bit of it and wasn't too far behind. No wheelies for either of us so traction not that good. On wet sand with a good knobblie I'd have though that you could easily better that if you can keep the front wheel down.

Ok, maybe I am overthinking this but here goes.
Can we run with no front mudguard?
My theory re damping is that as little as possible would be best for better grip. If my klr has too much damping the rear is all over the show presumabely because it is taking longer to get back on the ground again, so in a straight out race on sand I need as much of the weight (me and bike) going through the shocky onto the rear wheel. Same with preload, surely if the spring is softer then the wheel is more likely to lift off the ground. e.g. if the rear of the bike squats then theoretically the rear wheel is more prone to moving towards the bike and not the ground.
So in conclusion I need max preload and minimum damping, and as long as I can hang on this should be quicker.
Of course i could be wrong, but am going to run this combination at least for the first race.
Also if I put lots of air in my forks then this should have a tendency to lift the front wheel off the ground under acceleration therefore putting more weight on the back. Sorta like how drag cars are set up.

My theory re damping is...
Of course i could be wrong, but am going to run this combination at least for the first race. - Yes and go for it :D
Also if I put lots of air in my forks then this should have a tendency to lift the front wheel off the ground under acceleration therefore putting more weight on the back. Sorta like how drag cars are set up. - But they have a leetle more horse power...
Drop the back end a bit via preload adjustment and that's about all I'd change.
On the DR, I'd just move the shock to the lower position. It'd only take 2 mins. Just to make it a bit more stable.

Considering its Chrissy and all my riding opportunities have been reduced significantly until the beach races I started lightenining the KLR today. The rear rack and packrack and tool kit (with tools), and rear peg mounts and brackets and spare levers have now been removed.
I had to tether the bike to the ground to stop it floating away its that light.
If I get time the WR pipe will go on as well, but on second thoughts maybe a quiet bike will be better so as not to draw too much attention to myself.
If Nordie hadn't mentioned the ride to the race rule all sorts of shit could be removed.
Talked to a guy at Morleys who seemed to be an organiser and he said as long as the bike has a catch tank it is ok to run antifreeze. Didn't ask about sidestands. How much do they weigh i wonder.?

How do I put on a catchtank? Why? It's a beach for chrissake I've been dumping toxic waste there for years...
Oh BTW I found out why my bike fell over on the stand the other night - it's rooted!! It must have got walloped by the big rock at the end of tinline valley road that caught my ankle cos it is bent backwards - hence the big gouge out of the swingarm.
I'm thinking I'll put the new tyres on this week & leave the bike here rather than take it to the bach for xmas. Man fresh tyres are lovely things to look at.

who else is entered in the adventure class?, and are we going to arrive together en masse, personally I would rather use a trailer, so there is somewhere to stash gear/food/tools/fuel? etc, but riding there also appeals and if it goes pear shaped someone will have some space on a trailer surely.

OK I admit that I can do most of the work on bikes, but I have a major retardation issue when it comes to wiring. My father was(is) a very highly qualified electrical engineer, but none of that knowledge filtered through to me.
The kill switch has 5 wires going to it, but the tether switch has 2, how the hell do I know which ones to use. They also all go into one plug along with the starter switch to confuse the issue even further.
WW mentioned earlier to use it to cut off the coil?

1. Ok open up the kill switch button arrangement thing. There should be 2 wires that are connected to the red kill switchbutton - look closely it shouldn't be too hard to distinguish the kill button connections from the starter connections.
2. Take a note of what colour they are - mine are brown & something.
2 1/2. take off tank (which as you know means taking off all the rest of the crap)
3. OK trace the black plastic sleeving those wires are enclosed in down around the tripletree, to under the tank. they should end at a plug. Can you see it? No? Have another look... There you go.
4. Double check that you have the correct wires in the correct black plastic sleeving. OK now split the sleeving to about 50mm back from the plug - don't ask why just do it & don't nick the wires.
5. Cut one of the wires from the kill switch (remember I had brown but I'm not sure what colour you have) about 25mm from the plug. carefully strip the ends of the wires about 7.5mm back from the ends.
6. Ok now turn the key on & try to start the bike. Doesn't want to start? Good. Twist the 2 ends of the wires back together & try to start the bike again - remember to turn the key on... wants to start? good. That means you've found a good wire to interupt.
7. Use a couple of wire connectors - either crimp or screw, & attach one end of the tether switch to one of the wires you cut & the other to the other.
8. Turn the key on again& kill switch on try to start the bike with the tether bit inserted in the new switch. Wants to start? good.

19th December 2010, 20:49
Sorry laptop died
Ok Now the tether switch is wired into the kill switch wire circuit. if it wants to start when the tether is in it is good. Now pull the thether out - Watch out!!! I nearly lost my fricking eye with mine today. The bike shouldn't want to start.
If this is works then all is good & you can tape up the black sleeving carefully & tuck it all back in place.
Troubleshooting.
If the bike wanted to start when you cut the wires, stripped them back, twisted them together temporarily & tested them, but doesnt when the tether switch is wired in, try it with the thether part out. Wants to start now? Damn you have the wrong type of switch - take it back & complain.
If it's all too much for a bloke from Richmond give us a holler.

I am going to give it on last shot in a few minutes, if it doesn't work then expect an improptue shed night. I was just looking for start time (should have looked at the entry form PDF) and came across this Nelson Mail article - Opposition to bike racing on the beach (http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/3978613/Opposition-to-bike-racing-on-the-beach).
Forest and Bird Chairwoman Helen Campbell said she was incredulous that the loophole meant the public did not have a chance to have a say on the event.
"If you go through a public process for a management plan and it's manipulated not just once but three times, that's not what they're for.
"This is not just noise we're talking about, it's fuel and hydrocarbons and oil. There could be long- and short-term effects."
Council community services manager Lloyd Kennedy said "We said to the motorbike club, `We'll let you have this one, but that'll be the last one until the new plan's reviewed',".
Seems like this could be the last time if F&B have their way. Consultation on the revision of the Rabbit Island Management Plan may have a decisive and detrimental effect on the Beach Racing at Rabbit Island.
Those greenies are clever bastards though - fuel and oil are hydrocarbons Ms Campbell.

Forest and Bird object to anyone doing anything in the bush, so they seem to be considered as exaggerating trouble-makers - at least that's what the Nellie Mail conveys. The (that) story is months and months old (umm, 31/07/10). IIRC the Council adopted a 3-year suck-it-and-see approach and hasn't had any substantial complaints, so the NMCC is in a good position to have it's permits or whatever renewed.
The beach racing used to be held on Tahunanui Back Beach, but they have found a unique species of something-or-other there, so that's now out of bounds. Nothing remarkable about Rabbit Island beach, hey it's the shitworks and an exotic pine plantation and a gay pick-up/shagging spot (http://www.stuff.co.nz/searchresults?Search+Site=Search+Site&cof=FORID:9&cx=006730714154542492986:oh6vl0ybuqy&ie=UTF-8&q=rabbit+island+gay).

It's a pine plantation and there are areas you're not allowed to go because of the offal pits.
In the pits, bikes must be on a tarp to reduce any fluid leakage.

Thats the ridiculous part about the F&B stance. With appropriate management there is no reason why the racing shouldn't be allowed to go ahead. F&B are ignorant reactionaries who should pull their head out and work with NMCC and TDC. Good on NMCC and TDC for working together to come up with an appropriate plan to mange the even.

Saw a guy with a crazy looking K series BMW on a trailer today. Pretty sure its a beach racer. had road tyres on it.Yeah, he's a regular.

Edit: I'm actually off on the 4th and have permission to steal the car for the day so I can be towerer/umbrella holder! Is your trailer hitch 50mm or 1 7/8" Colin? That'd be great - dunno what size it is, the trailer was made about 10 years ago so it is likely to be metric. I will give you a call.
have you got a tow car sorted?
The reason I ask is that I may need to drop some shit (tools, food , fuel, deck chairs, brolly dollies, apparel and memorabilia kiosk etc) round to your place for you to take there for me.Yep, that'd be fine. We'll just have to co-ordinate things with the driver.
Padmei, how big is your tent? I might be able to get a 6x3m job if we don't have anything else. It will be good to have somewhere to sit out of the sun between races.

Hi guys
Ok
Here's whats gonna happen.
CooneyR - If you're gonna stay the whole day there then you can either take your Prado & call into my place around the corner to pick up the gazebo & fuel & tarp etc, or grab our bling mobile so Mrs CooneyR has some wheels & take that to Warewolfs to pick up the trailer.
Woodman you can either drop your stuff off at Wills if he's gonna be there at the start or drop your stuff off at WWs to go in the bling or we can pick it up on the way thru.
My gazebo is only 3m x3m but lwe have a big umbrella too.
Don't forget to take water & chips.
I'm amping 7 kinda shitting myself at the same time.
You guys tried av gas in your bikes before? Would it do any damage for a short blast?

I've no passengers that I know of yet so your most welcome.
Re timing I see that scrutineering is between 1215 and 1345 so will depend on if we are towing a trailer queen out or not. Padmei is sorting so I'll wait for Herr Commandant's instructions.

Ryan, if you are taking my trailer with bike on it, you will have me as a passenger.
I will take a 25L water barrel so gents don't worry about bringing your own drinking water. A lot of ppl get the fire brigade to rinse the bike after each race, gold coin donation.
Program is:
12:00p pits open. We should be there early to get one large site.
12:15p - 1:15p Sign-in. You will have to present your helmet for inspection, and possibly your bike.
1:25p Rider Briefing in riding gear, then practice.
2:30p - 8:00p racing.
There are 7 classes (combined) and it is likely we will race 4-5 times, 4-8 laps each, 60-90mins wait between races - hence the need for shade. At the end there may be an "all in race" for those willing to go out for more.
Sh!t, we should've organised the KB banner
Yay! this is gonna be fun. Now to go finish prepping the bike

I think at this stage it might be better to just turn up. I guess if Ryan, Colin & Will in the support truck are first at the bivouac then it can set out the gazebos & get the generators & lites set up.

yip that makes sense.
Pantyhose pantyhose ? I am running with the filter door off. Its on the right hand side so with a left turning track it should be less susceptible to filling the airbox with sand when roosted. Mr. K and Mr N developed these filters for just these kind of conditions. Also the induction noise sounds very cool.

Yes indeed Rabbit Island turned on a fantastic day for us.
Watching the other classes practise it kinda looked easy- just stay in a nice line & go round the corners.
Nordie, Woodman, Warewolf & myself lined up at the start of our practise laps with the MX3 open class. I was pretty nervous before the flag came down & to make matters worse the KLR started to stall right on the dropping of the flag. I started & head down saw with my peripheral vision the rest of the field disappear ahead of me.

3rd January 2011, 22:19
Well that was a top day out :woohoo:
Was great to have a few more NADS at a competition event. Everyone was still smiling at the end of the day, and I for one would've liked to have kept racing. The 640 'played strong, done fine' as they say, the preparation paid off as it was head-shaking like a bastard most of the time but never seemed like suddenly getting out of control. We had 4 laps practice then 4x 5 lap races and finally the 7-8 lapper 'all in' feature race for the moderns. Most of us improved with time, but at times later in the day I did lose concentration/coordination - one time did result in a tip-over in the corner. (the other time I was fully aware and simply cocked up.)
I had the misfortune of the tether kill switch becoming dislodged in a particularly aggressive bumpy corner. It was still connected so initially I thought fuel and switched to reserve but eventually I worked it out. Then next race I dropped it in the start/finish corner, but the 'bars fell in a rut so I couldn't get my hands under the bike to pick it up. It stalled when I finally picked it up, and after kicking it a few times a marshal hands me the tether... "you might need this." yeah, ta. Arse. I fell off again at the same place on the next lap, but managed to keep the bike running... but I checked the tether just in case. Third time round I nailed it in a beautiful big long slide :sunny:
The bike was fast enough to run with the slower open class MXers, but the nut holding the handlebars let the side down - mostly through the corners. :o There was one chap who must've been pulling 20km/h more: I was slowly passing something-or-other near top speed and he just blew our doors off. Oddly I was able to out-brake quite a few of the MXers which was a surprise. The rear was gripping well enough that I struggled to lock the back end (which is normally effortless) and blackened the rear disc. The tyre actually turned on the rim a little bit, from braking, but cranking up the rim lock mostly stopped it.
Loads of fun!! Must do it again some time
And thanks to all the support crew for your efforts, it was a pleasure. :niceone:
Some technical notes:
The start/'away' side was closest to the waves. It was much harder packed than the return. I was seeing 150-155km/h at the braking point and it was accelerating the whole length of the straight (800m) although the bike got to high 130's fairly promptly. The return was much softer and slightly in to the wind: early in the day 5th gear near redline was only pulling 138km/h, same as 4th going up the harder surface. Later in the day, 127 was about max, and changing 4th to 5th too soon dropped the revs too far out of the power, like down to say 6,500rpm and it would languish at 120-121-122. Oh, and by the end of the 3rd race the filter skin was dirty enough to drop the top-end speed from 155 to 147, and those kays made a real difference to chasing down the open-class bikes (as, presumably, did the improvements elsewhere in the rev range). Removing the skin instantly returned the missing power.
That was running my standard 'adventure' gearing 16/44, 2T up on the rear. Possibly I could have run taller  as it spent a lot of time in the 1500rpm above peak power.
Suspension-wise I'd dropped rear preload from 21mm to 10.5, and dropped the forks the final 2mm into the clamps ie the top of the caps was flush with the top of the top triple. Front rebound went -1 click faster and compression +2 clicks firmer. I tried -2 clicks softer but that didn't improve stability just ruined braking. The +2 clicks really held the front end up under brakes, so I went from overshooting the corners due to braking judder to undershooting due to braking so much harder. Result! Basically I would sit forward through to about 90-100km/h then sit riiiiight back as it started weaving - then have to climb forward on the bike again to change gear :shit: not good at high speed when she's bucking like a bronco and you are using every bit of stability you can generate.
I hacked off the front 10-15cm of the front guard, but that didn't make any noticeable improvement to stability. Worth a try.
The Shinko 540's did the job at 11 psi, it was set and forget. Before the corners got cut up they really, really hooked up well: I was able to bang the throttle open to the stop while cranked over hard at about 80km/h in third, and they'd just hook up and drive. :woohoo: Schweet.
Interestingly this year there was no debris in the sand. So you were only sand- or water-blasted which is nowhere near as painful as rocks, sticks and shell fragments. Full face road helmet did the business, I must say highly recommended over MX helmet & goggles. My face was comfortable all day, and any vision problems would have been just as bad (or worse) with goggles.
Signing off, my limbs are starting to ache. :violin:

Good fun :D
I arrived at the beach to be pointed to the "ADV Pits" sign and taped off area the organisers had made for us :woohoo:
Unpacked everything including the bike lift off the back and set up on my nice new tarp.
The KB crew was...
Racing: Nordie, Padmei, Woodman, Warewolf...
Hangers-on, Pit Bitches, Brolly Dollies, groupies: JavaHead, Topo, MrsTopo, Jatz, MrsJatz, Underground, MrsUnderground, HoT, CooneyR, Cynna...
Now if they'd brought their bikes too...
Sign-in and helmet check went fine although when your brother says "just sign here" you start to worry. That's when you find you've just entered Pre '86 on your '79 XR250 as well...
MX3 or Adventure Class, as it became known was the race after Pre '86...
Which led to a bit of scrambling and 400m head starts for the others in one case.
Got a practice in on the DR and then my first race was on the XR. Which I hadn't practised on so I didn't know where to sit as you can see from the photos
5 laps for the classic bikes and 7 laps for the modern's.
10 laps for the all in final.
The XR was more stable than the DR but was a bit slower too.
Changing into 5th and the revs would slowly drop off for the remaining 1/3 of the straight.
The XR really handles well and goes pretty well for a bike that only gets raced and the engine hasn't been touched for 50-60 hours over the last 4-5 years or so.
The DR had a very nice mid-range even with the stock pipe but with the 16/46 gearing (170kph theoretical max) it needed to go down a tooth in front as it was pulling 6,000rpm at 136.1kph and 1 lower would have been 6,500rpm at the same speed but nearer to peak power.
It could have maybe juuust got 140kph but I got over 130 which was my aim as I guestimated 130 odd kph max leading up to the races :woohoo:
The start straight as WW said was a lot smoother as it was on the seaward side and was a lot wider and the water kept the ruts smaller. You didn't need to sit back on the seat much at all. For top speed you'd go wide and for lower lap times you'd go narrow.
The return straight was a different story. Narrower and no smoother line or side. I was going about 30kph slower down this side, seated riiiight back as far as my arse and ventura bars would allow and both ends were swapping around all over the place but you just kept it pinned :scooter:
Watching the K100 completely nailed through the corners and swapping the back a metre from side to side on the good straight was amazing :shit:
Having a fast bike pass you on the rough/soft side and cross over in front was an experience.
I didn't do the last Pre '86 race as I was getting a bit knackered and passed on the All In at the end too.
Shane was a bit annoyed I'd packed up as he was going to nick the DR when my back was turned and do the last race on it. I'm happy the DR didn't get treated to that abuse but it would have been cool to watch :corn:
Not many got the chance to pack up their bikes and ride home. Who needs a race bike
My camera got borrowed a couple of times and I took a couple of shots too so there's 318 photos to go through...
I also have a gps trace of the track :D

You peoples must have the idea what went down so all I'll say is I was crapping my daks going along the practice laps. I'm not used to having the bike moving all over the place at speed so kept it not quite tapped out.
After the practice laps I felt like I'd done the tower of terror in Dreamland - it was exciting but not quite sure if I wanted to do it again:shit: My heart was still running at 150bpm about 5 mins after stopping.
The guys were talking about what they & the bikes were doing while racing however my mind went blank when they asked me- all I had in my head a blurrred vision of the handlebars wobbling madly.
The first race tho was a completely different story. For some reason I stopped thinking of the consequences & held it pinned. I was concentrating on getting around those corners as fast as I could (which wasn't fast). After a few laps I was feeling like I was getting better & realy begain enjoying it until the last lap when I dropped it on the corner & took a while to get started.
However the following corner was my last as the clutch stopped working. I pushed it back to the pits with help from Jatz.
Something in the box had broken so Iwas out of the racing. What a bummer. Iwas absolutely loving it until the clutch thing & although I was dead last by a long shot (& having the indignity of the leader lapping me in a wheelstand) but am absolutely hooked. It was the most exciting experience I've had for a while & reccommend all to have a go.
Next step- track day at Ruapuna:woohoo:

Out of interest, how would a 'trials' type tyre go. A grippy tyre would help with acceleration, but might create too much drag at high speed. A less grippy tyre should stay on top (think aquaplane) and allow more speed. :scooter:
I've only had limited experience of riding sand, so shoot me down if I'm wrong.

I don't think anyone who's done a rutted sand straight even at 100kph would be going "hmmm, I need less tread".
On hard pack sand then a trials tyre on the back may be fine though.

Less grip probably means more wheelspin and taller gearing to maintain drive.
I reckon you would have to try both tyres on the same day to pick the difference. But having said that, the 640 seemed to have much better grip with the Shinko 540s than the 200EXC did with Michelin S12s; both were pretty much topping out so they probably couldn't have used any more grip to gain top speed.

It's funny that from the sidelines the backmarkers looked so slow going round the corners. When I was trying to pin it (yes believe it or not guys at times I was) it seemed so fast with so much going on at the same time.
Woodman I've taken the engine case off & have to take the clutch basket out to see why the lifter won't... um, lift. I'll take a short vid & put it on the KLR thread so I won't hear all the DR boys crapping on.
BTW thanks to alll those that helped in the pits & with support. Hopefully next year we can tempt a few more out there- maybe even a Welly contingent.

Took the clutch basket off & seperated the plates. Looked & looked & couldn't find anything that looked broken, out of place or otherwise.
The lever bit that was rotating shoud have been sitting 5mm above the top as per wear marks. All it does is pull the lifter (rod thing) that pulls the pressure plate off - simple as that. I played around with things & then temp buttoned it up & tried it.
Seems to work when I push the bike however with a fair bit of resistance. I may have a stretched cable but will get a new gasket, fill er up & see what happens.
Anyone had any xperience with any similar problems. Even tho I was racing I'm sure I wasn't giving it any more than I would on a knarly day in the forest. I did redline it a few times tho however the engine temp guage never read any higher then normal (ie in the middle of the guage).

Interesting the difference in riding styles for the types of bikes ,k100 was fast into the turn ahead of the s10 ,big wide power slide with knee on the ground and slightly behind on exit as opposed to the s10's slower tighter line ,they lapped at the same speed though .

...The s10 really should have been with us anyway from what Ryan and Colin were saying. Shit i could have told them the klr was pre 92.
The S10 wasn't first built until 89 so not quite sure how he ended up in the Pre 86 class. Still the K100 vs S10 was probably the most exciting (even) battle or the day.
And to hear
Geddoff - the S10 has a way nicer sound than the K100.
Righty some of my pics. Nordies advise seems to have paid off - pretty happy for a first time attempt. Got way more and heaps higher res if anybody wants them. I've put the pics into folders in Photobucket so click the pics below for more. Have a look at some of the Warewolf and Woodman pics for rear wheel look up and sliding both wheels (sand being pushed out by both wheels).
Firstly Mr #12 - cleaned up big time. Fastest guy on sand in NZ at the moment apparently. Unique cornering style - lock up the rear and get hard on the front from about 100m out, chuck in down about 3 gears during the slide, hopefully be good speed to comfortably tip in about level with the apex, handful of throttle and dump the clutch just before the apex and hang on power sliding out. Wheelie the first 1/3rd of the back straight about 1/2 the time - he was so far out in front.

I was looking at my gearing chart, theoretical max was 190km/h at redline with that tyre. So on the firm surface there was approx 30km/h of wheelspin at 155km/h and a lot more on the soft stuff. :shit:
Peak power is 1500rpm below redline so taller gearing may have increased top speed, since the faster I went the less power the engine was producing. Not by that much as the torque curve is pretty flat, but changing sprockets would definitely be worth trying next time.

No,did not win, not even close. We were in the mx3 open which was the fatest class their so didn't expect to win, but I was amazed at how quick the lead guys were. The top guy was pulling 180km/h from what I have heard.
In the end I just tried to keep as close to Warewolf as i could (which wasn't that close), but he had issues so I finished in front once and would have in the feature race too but one side of my tank ran dry:facepalm:
The best thing about it was seeing how late i could brake and how fast I could get round the corners without it going too pearshaped. A couple of times the backing into the corners would turn into a seamless drift out of the corner and that just felt so cool. It may not have looked as cool but who cares. It was also good to have some run off so if things did get fcuked up you didn't end up in a ditch or worse.

http://www.sportsground.co.nz/ClubSite.asp?SiteID=13064&PageTypeID=3&PageID=45266
If there is interest I (or we) will organise a local Nads adv ride on one of the other days for those from out of Nelson taking in the Maungatapu (since a few haven't done it) & Hori bay with a coffee stop at Pelorus.
The other option may be a ride over the hill to Anatori or goldfields depending on if there are any takers & if they want a heavy bike or lil bike ride.
I myself am thinking of entering the BMW this year inbto the beachraces (already lining up a sponsor) & riding it in the older class.
i am also thinking seriously of taking a few days out of the busy season (NOV) & visiting the Burt Munroe rally. I was thinking about doing the beach race there (or the hill climb) but you need a MNZ licence which may end up being quite expensive.

Yes a ride around that time wouldbe good and also could bolster an adv class and give it some cred.
i,m thinkin of entering the klr in the old class as well. They will never know its an 05 and not an 87 and and anyway its just a whole heap of fun so places don't really matter.(although it was good beating Warewolf almost twice)

.....I myself am thinking of entering the BMW this year inbto the beachraces .....
You'd better get on with some practice. The K100 and XTZ750 were pretty damn quick and entertaining - esp the K100. We'll be expecting some spectacular riding.

Awesome - good to hear the little zinga might live again (soon ish)

I was thinking about doing the beach race there (or the hill climb) but you need a MNZ licence which may end up being quite expensive.Day licences when offered make it quite affordable for infrequent races, but remember a full licence means you won't have to pay any more licence fees for the year. Beach races, cross-country, endurocross, flat tracks... All of that can be attacked on the snotmobile or anything else you can get your grubby mitts on.
i,m thinkin of entering the klr in the old class as well. They will never know its an 05 and not an 87Follow-on models are permitted, ie those continued to be made after the cut-off year without significant changes, so it is legal for the class. I sneak the 640 into the pre-98 class but that's a bit of an arm twister since it got the high-flow head in 2003, but as I'm not competitive no-one really cares. Enter as many classes as you can, the more riding the better! I should be running the 200 and the 640.

Padmei posted the other day that the organisers decided it was all too hard this year. So there won't be one.
