Err, taking a tumble and cracking your helmet open and possibly it's contents too? I'd get a proper full-face helmet ASAP if I were you - even a 2nd hand one if you can't afford a $100 brand-new one right now (although if you can afford a CBR, you should be able to afford a new helmet, jacket, gloves and boots...)

the price of the lid on yer nuggin is the price at which you value it.
One place not to cut corners is yer skid lid.
Go buy a decent approved well fitted lid asa.
I don't think you would be fined from a cop unless you were being a dick on the roads and they pulled you over and did the full shabang on you, but I don't think they'd check for that.
The main thing is if the worst should happen, is it gonna save that prudy face of yours?

I'm not sure about the fines... but if it doesn't have the NZ safety standards requirements... then the helmet might not be able to save your life in the case of an accident.
I'd advise you buy a cheap helmet until you find the exact one you want. I know Red Baron is selling FFM Helmets for $119 that are safety approved.

How much do you value your life?
Cos that is the burning question that only you can answer.
If you come off the bike and hit your head, then there wont be much left of ya head or brains. :weird:
Go and buy a fullface helmet as soon as you can.
As to the fine for not wearing a helmet at all... most probably $150.
and for that $150 you could go and buy a full face helmet.
hey, haha, i knew i was going to that sorta response :P,
my helmet is a full face one, its a bit like :

Yes there is a fine. The helmet must be approved. Whether your average lawman knows what the various approval marks are is a moot point.
Regardless, buy a decent lid.
Yes there is a KB fine. You must put $1 in the chocalate fish account.
haha ZXR,

Didn't know you could buy a non approved helmet in NZ,but I suppose with private importing they can bring any shit in,a helmet for another sport would stand out.For trials we only have to wear an ''approved'' helmet,so I wear a horse riding helmet,it's ''approved''.

Oh and GNR those CMS helmets are safety approved, so you don't "NEED" a new helmet :)

I would doubt if any helmets on sale in shops in NZ wouldn't meet the safety requirements, but as people have said, a helmet is one thing you shouldn't economise on because it is one of the most important things saving you from serious injury or death. There are some inexpensive helmets on the market (not cheap, that denotes nasty too!) so you don't need to break the bank, but a good helmet should last you for years so it's worth paying decent money for one that fits well and is quiet. The plain colours are usually cheaper than the ones with graphics.
I had to buy a certain type of helmet when rallying (Snell approved from memory) as they have heaps of rules and regulations. It cost me more than my motorcycle helmet and it's an open face ugly thing!
I don't think the average cop would know if your helmet was approved or not, as long as it does the job and doesn't appear damaged I doubt they'd give you any grief. Hell, I've never seen them hassle kids who don't wear cycle helmets, so I think you're pretty safe!

A few questions:
How many heads have you got?
Do you require your head for day to day activities?
What is the replacement cost for a head?
Would you let a friend to swing a 10lb sledge hammer with cheese grater attached at your head for the fun of it?
Suggestion, Buy a decent helmet whilst it may not protect you from every eventuality the more you can reduce the risk, the more you will be able to enjoy your bike.
PS you can also ask the same questions about hands, arms, torso, legs and feet... and your bike shop will love you!

I'll mail you some pics, as for a price, just make a donation to the KB server fund using the PayPal option on the homepage if you want the helmet.
It's an HJC (C17?) something or another, with a spare Iridium visor.
And it's NZ legal.
