What is the motorcycle equivalent of a black bonnet? Here in the far north, the thrifty youngsters have discovered that by far the easiest and cheapest performance mod to that first car is just to paint the bonnet black. It obviously works well judging by the sheer number of them. Not sure how it would improve an already black car though?

The whole matt black bonnet thing is about stopping the sun's reflection from the bonnet it started out on Jet fighters that were just polished aluminium (ie lots of reflection) then found its way onto cars in the 60's and 70's.

As far as I know it started out as a MOPAR thing to do your bonnet matte black. Then all these sissys with their jappas started doing it:nono:
Or a carbon fibre bonnet to save weight- of course they could save a lot more weight and money by pulling out the electric windows and power steering but that might stwain their wists..
I am guilty of it in the past:o

That was to prevent the pilot getting temporarily blinded by the glare off of the nose. Look at the P-51's for examples long before the jets did the same.

Gilmet eyes road warriors (worriers?) hate it when the last rays of the day penetrate to the deep dark recesses of their hoody's. With their 'Racing seat' bolted to the floor (lower COG = FAST) it is hard enough to see over the dash without sun strike.
Have they not discovered the power of the GT stripe?
As for bikes - a white out pen colouring in the tyre lettering is the tweek of the week. Magically restores total grippyness

Absorbing light and radiateing heat are two totaly different characteristics of "black" mate.
Why the hell are radiators black if it attracts heat?
Let's put it this way for the real slow people out there.
Black is hot to touch in the sun.
Is a heater hot to touch when it's turned on?
Does a heater "absorb" or "radiate" heat?

the old black bonnet,
Tailgate everyone untill you finally rear end someone.
Replace your Bumper(nose cone) with a fibre glass kit, get second hand bonnet (tinted visor) to replace broken one.
Motorcycle version of black bonnet.
Of course other requirements are, small capacity motor, slouch in seat so only your eyes are above the dash, helmet on sideways and a loud muffler so everyone can hear how much your engine is struggling to go not at all fast.

Actually, I think that black absorbs both heat and light. It then has to radiate the heat back out cause the light is taking up all the room...

A black panel will be hotter than a silver panel. Why? Black absorbs all colours of the light (think rainbow). Much easier to see a red light on a white panel than on a black.

white light is composed of the 7 colours of the rainbow. Blacks and dark colours absorb more of light than white and silver colours. It's a fact. Never heard of "thermal black", maybe it was in that final year physics lecture that I missed....

When you build a new house these days, the colour of paint you use can affect you getting a code compliance. For instance if you put insulclad on and paint it black, you void the warranty issued by the insulclad supplier/installer. All colours in the charts have a light reflective index and they need to be 60 or above. [I think!] The council will /can refuse to issue CCC if this is the case. However, I built a house finished in Linear weather board and it was painted with a special paint called "cool black"
