View Full Version : Socks to ride in?

I've often had this as a bit of a dilemma. My boots are snug so I can't wear thick socks. In the past I've actually be using el cheapo Warehouse jobby business socks because of the length (and I don't need them for my current work as I don't wear socks :) - gotta use 'em some how).

Anyway, because they're business socks they've got bugger all padding, and they make my feet sweat like a...well...like a randy teenager.

My snowboarding socks are too thick (but are great) and on occasion I've been wearing icebreaker socks but they don't have a good length (but they're good as well). I have some "coolmax" sports socks but they're too thick.

Soooooo, anyone have any good recommendations for some socks with say, a medium cushion? I need some padding 'cause me feet get sore but too much padding, me feet get sore.

I'm a fussy bugger.

If you so infrequently wear socks splash out on good wool or merino ones. Make a helluva difference if you have sweaty feet.

I saw this (http://www.motomail.co.nz/eStore/Style/RVPASOCKS.aspx) just last night and thought they looked interesting, if not just a smidgen "ghey". Still, no-one knows what yer socks look like when you're riding, innit?.

I have a pair of Oxford sox. Really comfortable and $29 for 2 pair. Got them from cycletreads.
Also have a pair of Draggin Jeans kevlar sox (dont ask me why!) quite thin and cool as well as comfortable.

The icebreaker ones are merino. Bloody good but I've yet to some that are a decent length (I'm a icebreaker slut :))

They look interesting. Might have a closer look at them.

Maybe try these

77% merino. Not cheap but if you're an icebreaker man, these probably aren't too expensive :scooter:

I use Bonds socks for snow skiing. They are called 'pillowfeet'. They're just cotton, but are fucking amazing. long enough to come right up over the top of my ski boots. On the last day of the season I forgot them, and both of my big toes still have bruised nails today. That was after 24 previous days on the mountain with no bruises/blisters/cold feet.

They'll be thick and heavy.

Kathmandu Merino is amazing - expensive though.

Yeah about the same price as icebreaker.

I might have a look around a decent Warehouse for these (since they sell bonds?). See how thick they are.

I use smartwool socks in for snowboarding but they're too thick for my bike boots. They're insanely good.

These look good and seem to be a real good price. I dunno about buying online though since I dunno about how thick they'll be.

I think it'll be a trip to some shops and see what there be. I can look like a chick feeling all the clothing :)

"I love the style of these socks, but it just doesn't feel right and I think it'll make my ankles look big...and maybe my ass" :)

Icebreaker is great and there are plenty of longer styles, if a TAD over priced, but I only really buy it from the Otaki outlet store. I guess you have a DFO up your way where you could look for old stock there as well...

I looked at my boots this mourning to see if I could do something with them. It's an idea but I need some better socks for riding anyway so if all else fails I'll probably give this a go...or get new boots :) I noticed they're actually falling apart at a few points. Yeah I could fix them for stuff all money but why give up an excuse to buy new things? :)

Yeah I only buy from the outlets in Dorkland. But every time I've looked up there they've never had any with a decent length. At outlet prices it's super stuff. At retail price, it's good...maybe...just...maybe.

I purchased some bamboo sox last year while travelling on Oz. I was so impressed "I bought the compny", well not really but we do now import bamboo clothing (including socks) as part of our online product range. Link in my signature below.

Bamboo (viscose) is ultra absorbant so it wicks moisture away from the skin, and has great odour and bacterial combatting qualities. Super soft to wear but a very tough fibre also. Our Organic Bambu Dru range is unbleached, undyed and free of the chemical nasties (e.g. formaldehyde) that are increasingly present in imported clothing..... and a lot cheaper than a certain merino based range :shit: The socks are very similar in appearance to a white cotton sports sock and available in calf or short 'bootie' styles though our sock stocks are limited at present.

Incidentally I've got a friend trialling one of our Mens' long sleeved T-shirts under his cordura on a ride to Northland this weekend for its sweat sucking ability. PM me for his feedback. We also have a dyer organised to cater for those who prefer a colour other than white and the garments (Women's Tank Tops) we have dyed black so far look real sharp :niceone:

I use Gaerne ones that I bought when I was motocrossing. Great socks designed for motorbike riding that have additional padding where the pressure points of the boots are. Can't imagine anything better

I prefer rugby socks. Nice and long, so they cover the whole inside of the boot. Absorbent for those hot summer rides. And not particularly thick, so you can actually get your boots on as well.

I highly recommend military Antarctic-grade socks. Thick, warm, and pretty tough.

If you're in Aucks, you can get them at Kiwi Disposals (http://kiwidisposals.co.nz/) on K'Rd, they always have oodles of them.
