When I was a lad the road sweeper came around and it was only one guy driving the truck - if we were lucky it was after school and we could run alongside of it throwing rubbish and sticks etc in front of the sweeper brush and watch it get sucked up. The driver appeared to find this funny and encouraged us.

Fast forward to 2010 and there is now a ute with flashing lights in front of the sweeper truck (2 people in it now) followed by a full size truck with a huge LED glowing sign on the back to warn you that there is a sweeper in front of it.

And I wonder why my rates keep going up each year.

How many people does it take to mow the grass beside the motorway...?

1 to drive the mower and about 6 or 7 driving various safety trucks ahead and behind.

We passed a contractors truck with LED warning lights, road cones, 30kph sign (one way only) fluro vest etc and all he was doing was repairing the white plastic marker pegs!

If we had obeyed his road speed sign, we would have had to do 30kph all the way to Oamaru FFS.

Sort of reminds me of my trip home to Bishkek from the mine today.....

We have those blue trucks working as fuel tankers and water carts around the place as employment for the local villagers more....pretty bullet proof...

But I do work for a Canadian Company and you can imagine the fun we have applying western work and safety practices to a work force that was herding goats on mountain tops for their last job....

In soviet Russia you not make road, road make you!

Yea and mowers doing the side of road used to be just that. Now we have a truck to warn you there's one up ahead, a truck to tell you here he is, the mower himself & his truck, and a truck to tell you you've passed it
