Just wondering if anyone else has done this on a small Dirt Bike with knobblies ??? (whoops forgot I now have XRJ's Adv tire on rear)
Took off last Sunday, the 28th at 5.45 am (was up at 3.45am, road over to Napier) met XRJohnny, who was riding his XR650. Woollies on our seats :shake:, back packs, spare 21 inch tubes each & Johnny with his trusty but heavy tool kit heading up the East Coast to see if we could have a fun day with some gravel and clock up some Ks.
Coffee at Wairoa, breakfast/petrol at Gizzy, photo at Tolaga Bay, petrol/ice cream at Tokomaru Bay and Johnny took some of the local kids for a ride on my “Mean looking bike lady” ( its black LOL). They loved his bike better!!.
Pushed on to Whangaparoa Bay along State Highway 35 for a much needed lay on the grass and recovery  NB Johnny had been losing knobs off his back knobbly all the way from Gisborne((see photo taken of tire at Tolaga Bay). Opotiki for gas and an hour or so lunch stop around 3:30ish. Then on to the Motu for a bit of gravel and standing up on foot pegs to avoid that "monkey butt" :shake: that was starting to set in on dirt bike seats.
Back to Opotiki AGAIN along state Highway 2, a cool gorge ride :scooter: along the Motu River. (Can anyone tell me the name of the gorge ?) but as time pressing couldn’t stop for photos. Gassed up again and headed to Whakatane.
We weren’t anal or should I call it ORGANISED and hadn’t worked out our route in relation to Ks so called into Whakatane to make sure we wouldn’t be doing loops around Napier to make the 1000Ks. . . . Just a bit of the “she’ll be right” attitude.
Wet road and dark all the way to Taupo via Kawerau.
Arrived at Bernard’s (bikeflite) at 11:45pm. Told him to expect us for tea at 7:00-8:00ish LOL. Bernard, the best host ever had a cooked meal, dessert and coffee waiting for us. Left for Napier 1:30ish, heavy fog, wet road but opened up to a beautiful half moon & a fab fast ride home. By fast we mean 110 kph on my 200 LOL with 14 tooth sprocket on the front. Gives the bike great pull on the hills & keeps revs up. NB 15 = std & use 13 for the dirt.
Quite fearful Johnnys rear would puncture on the Taupo Rd as his XR650 chews through knobblies on the road. We stopped several times to check & celebrate the 1000 k MARK.
Back in Napier 3.30 am. Back to Havelock & into my bed by 5.00am :wari:
In all 1064 ks (or 649.8 miles as it is on 2hundy) clocked up in 23.25 hrs. Took morning off work & we both thoroughly enjoyed the whole 24 hour experience. Love to hear from any other riders who have done the same. With less photo stops, a larger bike, bigger tank, all fast roads, no gravel etc I could have done far more ks in the 24 hrs but this was far more FUN. :2thumbsup :2thumbsup :2thumbsup

Good on ya. Quite an achievement. :woohoo:

It's about time I tried to crank out a 1000km day, but it might be dangerous for me as my attention span is too.....err.......umm......what was I talking about?

(Can anyone tell me the name of the gorge ?)

Hi there - cool trip. It's the Waioeka Gorge and follows the Waioeka River.

My grandfather was the foreman of the road gang that laid the original road through the gorge. One of his gang must have been into bikes . As a kid I absolutely hated being taken through to Opotiki from Gisborne to visit him and my grandmother - I'd be car sick before we even reached Matawai normally. Quite different on two wheels though!

Thanks, great to hear re those little bikes also doing it, especially for them pulling up the hills. So glad I had the 14 on the front. Had a new knobbly on. . . well a slightly worn mx bike discard I scrounged from the Honda Shop. Learn this from XRJohnny, they are free & make great Adv tires. It don't matter if they dont last as with the 650 as you just go back & get another. Maybe not best for WOF day tho.:msn-wink:

Thank you. A great photo. Yes it looks like the same bridge. Not sure what river. . .do you know JMJ ? Wanted to stop so many times dammm it!!!! At my slower 90 - 110 k speed gave Jny for the first time the chance to take in some views of the East Cape LOL. So wanted to take photos in the Waioeka Gorge & narrow parts of the Motu Track :crybaby:but encountered 4 vehicles & thought better not! The roads are AWESUM for bikes as you know.

Thanks for that. I read the name of the gorge at one point & thought. . . . as Bridget Jones would have said ' must note in diary' & then forgot! Sure made fantastic :woohoo: riding on a bike. Head a bit too often to the left looking at the river & not the road. LOL Your grandad sure did a great job:yes:

Hi Wade ,how are you doing? What riding have you been up? XRJ & I both had a great day. So lucky to have him as my Wing Man. . . . happy to go at my 200's pace, carry all the tools & fix a puncture in record time if need be. Must get a final photo of his knobbly & post as amazed he got home on it !!!
You have done some huge rides back in the States & here. Would be keen to hear more about them ?

Work has been busy, busy...Spring planting... Haven't been doing much riding with work taking center stage..UGH.. But, Spring is over and time to get the wheels turning again:scooter:

My biggest ride was the TAT in America. That trip was 5000 miles long and 95 % metal roads/tracks.. Pretty cool..

Next time you and XR Johnny want to get out and burn some $2.00 + petrol give me a PM and I'll tag along...:sunny:

Looks like a fun ride. The DR200 has proven to be a good choice for my wife as an alternative to her Cagiva Raptor. She has logged more k's on the DR in recent months than the Raptor. The idea of interchangeable front sprockets appeals though. Where did you grab them from?

We have the Keintech carb kit plus I chopped the end of a stock muffler and opened it up a bit. Probably not as efficient as the Keintech mod but sending it to the US was not a viable option. Has made a difference but we are looking at ways to keep the power up but reduce the exhaust noise.

Thanks

Yes, I did consider ear plugs when I had the straight pipe & Super Trapp on. A ride I did leaving from Taupo & riding 42 Traverse, Fishers Track with biteflite & back sure had my ears ringing :( But the little 200 sure sounded hot !!
Any bike shop will order you in front sprockets, & as I said having no guard on makes quick changing. You soon learn what notches on rear adjusters to turn to have chain perfect. I can change in about 20 mins, boys I ride with can do in 10:crybaby:
