first thing i am a newbie in dirt bikes. was wrenching my jetskies for a while but not bikes.

the possible problem.

kdx 200. i put the bike on neutral and start the bike . than pill the clutch full way and shift to 1 gear , the bike will catch it and stall (clutch is still full way). i have to rev it a little just prior changing from neutral to first.
is it normal?
if not , how to fix it........

thanx a lot

Considering your other post on oil....what is the background to this bike/clutch problem?...what oil was in the box?

dont know about oil............bought the bike from a guy who seems does not know anything about bikes ........... tried to adjust carb and changing sparkplug to a random type while having 2 dollar size hole in the reeds :(
so bike was a mess...... thanx to Todd from cycletreads it has new back wheel , new reeds , air filter.............. running but rough.

there is not much oil in the bike and i tried to adjust the clutch on maximum. it helped but not completely.

who would you recommend to see to consult on a tight budget?

thanx a lot

First thing I'd do is warm the bike up, and drop the trans oil. Then put some new oil in do one ride then change again. If it was me I'd run dexron3 (think spelling is right) atf, and change every three rides, heaps of people I know use it with no problems.

Once you have your new oil in look at adjusting the clutch cable to your liking.

You may find a volunteer on here otherwise try and identify the problem (Which sounds like a stuck clutch or clutch action, for some reason)

Depending on your spannerability, I would...remove clutch cover and check the clutch....is action working? are plates burnt or otherwise stuck together?. Dismantling is relitively easy and then you would know what you are up against.

The clutch may be stuck due to wrong oil, or old oil. Don't pull it apart just yet, change the oil first.

Maybe....but post #4 sets of alarm bells in my mind....low power due to damaged reeds = lots of RPM and clutch slipping to get moving = burnt clutch....I may well be wrong, but for the sake of a cover gasket, I would be checking.

He also said it's low on oil! I'd change the oil and put the right amount in, then try. If no improvement check the cable adjustment. These are cheap easy things to do, and will help with the process of elimination. Don't see the point pulling the clutch apart if he doesn't know what he's looking for. You could wind up replacing part worn fibres for no reason, and then you'd order a gasket if it brakes. And the clutch baskets can snap when tightening the spring screws up, real common and expensive.

You can lay the bike on the side if you work on the clutch to keep the fresh oil in

problem solved.

opened ...
the gasket is f-word damaged , partly stuck to both engine and cover :(
went to repco and picked up a sheet of gasket paper designed to hold oil.
cut off and put it all back together. filled with exactly 0.8l (as stated on the cover) of 10w40 valvoline racing synthetic oil. NO CLUTCH PROBLEM AT ALL ANY MORE :)

the area looked reasonably tidy for the age of the bike.
some places are worn so will publish pics tonight for you guys to look...

thanx a lot

Gaskets will quite often fall apart if they are old when the cases are removed, thats why I said try the oil first! all fixed for now anyway

they dont even need to be old - maybe i just use cheap gaskets, but mine are always fucked if pulled apart again after a week or so.

try a light smear of grease on them before you put on then they should nt stick when you pull apart next time.
