Had to get a mate to slap me around yesterday, after we heard media reports (Second hand) that a rider had died in an accident, when a 11 kva power pole was taken out by a van and fell in front of the rider, it hurt soooo either i missed sommit or the media did !

Sure it was a close call and the adrenylin levels were wayyy off the scales, but H and i are still here to tell the tale ! If the media have mixed reports and there was a rider fatallity yesterday, my sympathies to the family, but i'm just glad it wasn't me !

Had met up with the Plims to take a ride over the takas in memory of snake who passed away after an accident on the hill 20 yr ago.
My bike was being a bitch, as i had just done rear tyre, chain and sproket (had tried my hand at realigning the swingarm too) but fucked sommit up and there were some ugly noises coming from the drive train, which were gettin worse so had turned around on the hutt side of the haywards to head home and sort it, with Glen deciding he'd join me (On ya bro) !

Was heading back past judgeford golf course at a more subdued pace than usual and was just cruising along the straight, when i saw a van coming toward us that looked like it was veering off to take a driveway or something on our side at high speed, nadda, no driveway there, next thing this van is flipping sideways in the drain on our side and i'm on the pics thinking whoa he's fucked, wham straight into a high voltage power pole !

Thats where things went into slow mo, the pole just started tipping across the road in front of us as there was the tension of low voltage lines going straight across the road pulling it that way, Fucking pleased i'd just done the HD's brakes.
So here's me going sideways with Glen locked up behind me, released a bit to straigten up and on the front hard as, tapping the rear,
Well fuck me i was thinking it's over here, as i was sure the lines were gonna snap and take our heads off but they held as the pole bounced , near touching the road first time then bouncing twice more bungying on the tension of the 11kva wires !

Stopped at what must have been 3 metres from the pole with the HT wires above our heads that cant have been more than a few ft above, the only gap the pole had left across the road was taken up by dangling LT wires across the oncoming lane to the pole on the other side ! No way through there, glad i went for ankors rather than escape, they would have ripped us off the bike !

So heart racing i done a carefull Uturn under the wires and got us out of harms way and then everyone was on Cell phones and i was looking for a way to get to the guy in the van without going near them wires , yup they were pretty much at head hieght eeeeek , fuck we were lucky, could be the rubber stoped them arcing on to us or it just aint our time Meh Still here anyway !
Some bloke from the other side of the mess had got to the back of the van and opened it up and the driver walked away (lucky lucky boy !)

No way through this lot to head home so out with the tools on the side of the road and realigned the bike a bit to see if i could get rid of the drive train noise and then rode back toward the hutt to test it !
All good so carried on over the Takas to catch up with the others ! Great day to be alive by the way !

You've got to stop scaring us like this, William.
One wonders...if reports had been true, would this have been just another bloody motorcycle fatality?

Glad to hear you are ok .. I was a little panicky when I saw that the haywards hill was shut and a mate told me her power was out .. couldn't find anything in the media that would explain it ... so whew ... pleased that all are ok.

So what was wrong with the chain??? :innocent:

Awww more me than anything i'd say !
The FXR have whats called a boyonet, (one on top tween the two heads and one in front) to align the engine with swing arm, think rubber mounted swingarm, so when ya pull the front bayonet one way or the other, it changes the dynamic of the swingarm and wheel alignment !

Remembering i'm still trying to get my head around this set up lol, but the front engine mount bolt going through the rubber mount is on a scew angle and the wheel alignment is out proportionally, so me being me thinks if i set the wheel centre in the swingarm then pull the engine over this way with the bayonet all will be fixed !

Well when i touched the rear brakes the noise coming from what looks (after laying under the bike and inspecting the front sprocket) like the chain trying to climb the front sprocket was ugly and getting worse !
Released the bayonet back and it alieviated it (not completely damnit) enough to ride for the day !
The bike was originally a belt drive converted to chain drive and of course front and rear sprocket align is pretty important, have just blocked the bike up and released the bayonet with the bike in gear to see if it moved but where it is is a happy place it seems .
Tightened the new chain again as i released it a bit much yesterday and upped the preload on the shocks as one of the locking nuts had worked loose and they could have been out on one side. Time to go test it out, but one up today and wont be riding the same as yesterday so we will see !

Think i may have near fucked the front sprocket now though which is sad cause it's a major to replace it seeing it's behind the inner primary !
And truth be know the problem with the wheel alignment is more than likely a slightly twisted front end !

So might look further into the upgrade kit i read about, which replaces the rubber cleveblocs for spherical bearings in the swingarm, do the front sprocket while its pulled down and find the twist in the front !

Or stop being so pedantic about trying to make it out handle sports bikes and ride it like an HD

Jeese i do go on huh !

Make that two !!! Only reason she was on the back, was cause she had a bad feeling about yesterday and well, as she feels she keeps me safe by being there rah de rah, there she was.....

Truth be known (seein i run with womans and my dogs intuition and it's kept me pretty safe so far (my gut bellows at me all the time) when things weren't going well with the bike, her saying this mumbo jumbo (the night before when she had other plans for saturday) had me thinking twice about continuing !

So i turned back and wow the gods speak louder than her !!! We were meant to go on that ride !

But it was all good from there on, The shit had happened and i felt her relax immensely the rest of the ride !
Even though she had noted (as has smilie) how quick her weekend disapeared !!!

fark!!! I must have been a bit behind you, heading to Kapiti, and came across it all over half the road. Did wonder how the hell the van sheared off that bloody great concrete pole on a straight bit of road. well done to you both for staying up and safe

Wow, glad you got away with that one Bill. Another bloke in Pram was not as lucky and was seriously injured over the weekend.

Oh - I used to know Snake's son Gene - he was a mates 'step son' for some time.
