Why am I starting a Dommie thread you may be thinking ?
Well the other night I was left home alone and unsupervised for a little too long and ended up buying one
I've been keeping my eye out for a cheapie to hang on the back of the camper and capable of doing 2up rides for a while and kept going round in circles and getting back to the dommie for a number of reasons ie, Quality, reliability, weight, PRICE .
So now I own one :woohoo:,I havent seen it yet so will have to wait till thurs when the very kind XF650 (who just happens to be going to Invercargill with a trailer ) picks it up.
He will no doubt be letting us know in detail what a piece of shite it is or hopefully what an awesome bargain I've scored ,so roll on thursday:wait:

Wanted to buy one instead of the DR last year but the $$$ difference made no sense at all.

No, it's a shemale dominatrix - this is a "dual purpose" thead.

I just hope she/it is in better nick than the last bike I picked up for someone from Invercargill - TM pic's can lie.

Me too! Me too!

I had a 1995 model for not too long. Not a bad bike at all - was one of SideTrack's favourites - but I wanted a proper trail bike. Got lots of Sidetrack articles about them if you want a read. Greg Power also had one for two-up adventure work, IIRC.

If it handles offroad anything like the xl, then you gonna get used to gorse.

other than that fine.

Doms are very soft in the arse, and the forks could use a tickle also.
Budget in a suitable spring/shock.
I don't think the original is rebuildable, or even worth an attempt.
(I want it's second gear ratio to put into the XRL. Better ratio for sure)
Enjoy.:sunny:

I've got some WP USD's from my KTM 400 lying on the floor in the basement just begging for a home  and from what I read its no biggie to adapt them ,just some mix and matching of bearings .
The WP shock may be a different story though as its got a built in cannister rather than a remote one so I dont know if theres room ,also unsure of the length .
Might just have to put up with a soggy arse till I can afford a replacement .
The OE Showa off my AT (same vintage) is rebuildable and is in New Plymouth as we speak being refurbished ,but it was a good piece of kit to start with.
It will be interesting to see the difference when I get it back as it had done over 130,000 k .

Nice bike nothingflash ,what year is yours?

Mine's an '88 but you wouldn't think it was 22-23 years old to ride it - I'm not saying I'm capable of pounding it to it's very limit but it gets the job done. I find it really comfortable on a big day.

I recently did the MMMMM ride and was a bit brassed off that I seemed to be bottoming out at the thought of a bump. I gave it a good clean when I got home and found the rear shock is adjustable (by screw turn) and found it was wound right around to soft  I was investigating a rear shock upgrade but am happy with the difference from being able to adjust it.

The guy that had it before me did a couple of figure eights of NZ on it without hassle.

Prior to this I had an '89 NX 250. That was also an incredibly reliable bike!

Today it was rest day in Ashburton. Tomorrow, Kaikoura. Getting closer.....

Cosmetically it's about right for it's age.

So as long as it doesn't fall off the trailer, I reckon he's got a bargin.

I took delivery of it yesterday at nordies place ,thank you so much Struan :2thumbsup
I reckon its a bargain too ,not bad for a couple of grand ,2 nearly new tyres, cam chain just been done and the chain and sprockets even have a lot of life left in them.
I did a few adjustments and ripped those stupid foot peg rubbers off and hit the road home this morning .I was impressed it goes bloody good nice and comfy on the seal with plenty of grunt .
I've ended up with a list of things to do as long as my arm though
I wasnt expecting much from the suspension - and thats what I got ,once I hit the corrugations it was all over the place like a mad womans shit ,and I've discovered that someone's welded an extra set of top shock mount holes about 25mm lower than the originals and the arse is riding high ,also the preload is wound up as tight as it will go so for now I will put those back to standard till I find an XR shock.
Brakes are shit even with the near new pads in them ,but that could be that I'm used to braided lines ,fluids probably dodgy and the discs are getting thin.
The revs arent dropping back to idle and I discovered the throttle only has one cable fitted and is relying on the carb spring to pull it back, I always wondered why they had 2 cables .
But all in all a good machine.

Thanks WW , I'll definately chuck that on and see how it rides-although I'm finding the original surprisingly comfortable.
No Padmei , but thanks for the thought ....mm KLR cases ,they'll be pretty heavy mabe I could melt them down and make sinkers ?
Its been rainy so I fossiced around in my bits drawer and found a container with the not so rooted suspension bearings off the AT .
After a bit of work with the angle grinder to shorten one bush she's like new again ,even resurected some not so bad seals .
Never throw anything out !
Todays "zero budget' transformation is to replace the tiney wee rear sprocket with a near new one with lots more teeth on it off the AT that I also hadnt thrown out (thankyou mr Honda for parts interchangeability)
The previous owner had this thing geared for intergalactic travel ,1st gear just wants to do 50k when I give it a bit of gas and second is good for 90 ...which makes it next but useless round here :shit:

37k or miles? 37k is like brand new for one of those.
Early models were prone to cam wear (I think they get noisy and rattly if theres a prob)
Plastics are crap and crack easily.
Other than that ...bulletproof
