View Full Version : Wellington: The inaugural Wellington two-stroke run: Date planning

OK. Seeing as I'm increasingly close to getting my notoriously unrliable MVX ready for rolling.
It occured to me, why don't we have a smelly old, fuck the enviroment, 2T ride?
I'm thinking late Jan early Feb. Departing Welly or wherever, meet on a Saturday night somewhere (if people want an overnighter) for beers and 2T discussion. Or just a day ride, I'm easy.
Let's have some thoughts please.
First off, who's keen regardless?
Secondly, who's keen for a one day or an overnighter?
Thirdly, what's a good weekend for you having posted your above preference?
Fourthly (is that a word Hitcher?), destination ideas please.
Date is set at 27th February and the route has been loosely set. She'll be a nice day jaunt through some of the 'Rapas best roads.
No support vehicle is organised folks so it's your own responsibility to ensure your machine is worthy of the task. Obviously the ride will be at varying pace but the route will be carefully explained, maps handed out and regroup points noted.

Well I'll be there, that should be enough to make an informed decision. Perhaps your brother could bring his 1999 NSR500 V2 he imported?

Just thinking (typing) out loud here.
I know of at least 2 very special 2T road bike builds in the making currently, one of which at least on KB. And the mintest (most mint?) RG500/RGV I've ever seen who could probably be convinced.
This could actually become a pretty special ride.
Added another option to the original post.

Got it on TM at the mo mate...I've fucked my foot something bad, and hate mx over summer. So if it sells, I'll get another one built in time for winter! Need a V8 SS ute if you know of anyone parting with one! I could always come along on my TR50!
I sent you off a courier parcel today too. Let me know if it gets there safe and sound.

You're onto it! I'll do my secret muffler mod to the MVX if we end up a doing an inner city assault. I saw Murray Saturday too on his R1-Z, cool little bikes in the flesh. He had the gall to give ME shit about riding an MVX :)
However, I'm not hearing many potential dates or destinations being chucked around here folks.

27th Feb. looks to be clear on callander.
Not too far tho, Dave and I might be on classic 125's if nothing bigger will start.
How about
9.00am meet Wgtn. M/C , terrorise the streets of Wellington, head to Upper Hutt.
10.00am Rimutex, ride the old Rimutaka race track to Fevestone (as the locals say it)
10.30 regroup ride anti clockwise around the lake to Martinborough.
11.30am Break here, for the Latte club.
12.00 leave for Gladstone
1.00pm Lunch break
2.30 leave for White Swan Greytown, posing in main st, let bikes cool before the hill, refreshments.
3.00 farewell northern riders who have joined us for the day.
3.30 head home
Timing fairly lose as many tall stories to be told and lies swapped.
Any diesels that wish to ride in support on the day will be required to run a 50:1 mix of Castrol R

Not sure what on at this stage LC or TZR, TZR has rego on hold and striped for summer series (think the last round is the week before). I better pull finger and get LC sorted too,
I'l bring a mate and get both bikes sorted, early morning baffles out ride sounds good
Be good to see the MVX riden, I have only heard it start just after I got it, sounded good and started easy. but hard to ride with a siezed throttle cable.

Well my PC crashed trying to upload the pictures so here's take 2.
My barrels won't be here this side of Christmas. I was up to 12 last night in a state trying to fit an inline filter to make the speedo & tacho more reliable (noise interference while riding makes them jump about (R1 dash). But trying to trace my customised loom I built 2 years ago is a bithc & nothing seemed to make sense. Then the dash wasn't going when I tried it.
Then some fuses blew. But I hadn't changed anything.
Except it had changed. When it was being measured they unplugged a bullet connector & later inserted it into another, essentially grounding it. Took a while to find what I wasn't expecting.

All the lines I have got are to short and stuffed were they have been pulled off, they are thin plastic, I will try and find replacment new pipe that is the same if you want Andrew? Or can send you a sample and you can have a hunt around aswell

Have you got a Haynes manual? Im sure that where it shows the diffence and pump stroke adjustment, and the pump internal helical gear difference.

Cool - the Wellington Classic Bike club has a ride that day from the Cenotaph to Lake Ferry. (leave Cenotaph at 10) Might be a cool idea to meet up at the Cenotaph and make a fist of it. I can let them know and see if its OK? One of em might drag out an old stroker too...

Slow healing, been doing to much and have stoped taking pain killers so it hurts and I actually I rest it. Another 4 weeks so the Dr says, need a Medical cert for MNZ to get my Licence back too, and a new helmet, and my leathers repaired. Was hoping to race at RoysHill on the 6th and Taupo on the 12th/13th. Cant see that happening, Hope to have my Sons KR ready for the 12th tho. Stupid highside, stupid crashing, stupid shoulder blade................................
The TZR just needs the lights bolted back in, take the slicks off ,mirrors etc
LC road bike (with RZ engine) all ready apart from a bit of clutch slip, might take the clutch out next week, still has standard springs by the feel of it. Havnt had the RZ engine apart, just fitted it out of a bent donor bike when I "borrowed" the road engine for the race bike

Well apparently the barrels sat in a corner after pressure testing (which they passed -maybe it took until now to get them to pass) & he promises it will ship tonight.
But that's got to be 10 days & some pissing around in customs while they decide if it should have gst added to a warranty return etc. I can't see me getting it till the 15th, at which stage I have to run some sealer through it to be sure & paint the barrels.
That pretty much leaves me the weekend of the 19/20 to put it together, find acceptable jetting & be ready for a WOF. Oh yeah & I'm racing sunday. I won't lie, its gonna be tight.

I on the other hand went on a lengthy excursion around Kapiti... It would not have been a lengthy excursion on any other mode of transport but it was huge fun.
Its running better but still wont take full throttle without bogging as I think the restriction in the AC50 header kills the A100 engine but I need to look at the carb again methinks. I can lurch up to 70kph OK and it will build past there.
Lets face it - it was definately not designed for a fat old man but god its funny to ride....

Could also be the muffler is choked up with old oil. That will stop it revving for sure. I had one so bad I could hold the throttle open & it would only rev so far. But that was an extreme case.

Well it's been a very productive week on the MVX front.
Drew's busied himself getting the front fairing mint and making the best bits of two instrument panels into one. Lower pipes and footpeg hangers are fitted, as are the carbs which I've richened up a little for longevity over outright performance. Tank, sidecovers and guard still need to be painted in a perfect world but the budget's just not quite there right now so I may just slap it back together for the ride and be done with it for now. Decent tyres take precedence over pretty paint to be honest.
Everything's well on track although I'll lose a weekend this one due to racing at Ruapuna and then next Sunday for the Vic Club trackday at Minefeild. Should be all good I hope.

HaHa, Hilarimouse.
Well I was up late last night getting things sorted out. The Povervalves (TSS YPVS driven blade type) needed some fettling to match these barrels. Sadly they could have been a bit longer, I'd trimmed them to clear the pistons on the old barrels but these are slightly different, but they should be ok. Had to adjust the stops. All takes time. Then I plugged in the servo & checked it worked.
The ring end gaps were seriously too tight so I had to file some clearance in them. Then bolt it together to the head & pump it up. Seems to hold pressure for many minutes. Bleed off overnight so I may still put in in a bucket of water to test it.

April 10th works for me, I suposse there will always be a clash of dates
What about a 2 stroke ride to Manfeild for the 1st Winter Series meeting?
Could have a North and South ride and all meet there

April 10's fine for me. Nothing like the smell of Castrol R to cure a Deano induced hangover.

That sounds like a lot of Ks from wgtn to Minefield for a shakedown run. April 10 sounds good for Lake ferry or where ever.
I've not done a bone on my bike this week, too busy on other bikes. Further distraction of picking up another tonight & getting it ready for trail ride next week. At least its a 2 stroke.

Wet weekend has helped progress, despite the new GasGas taking attn. Engine's back in the frame (real tight fit, takes some origami moves), PVs back in. Needs pipe, rad, oil & water & it should start up.

running premix for running-in a bike is never recomended by manufacturers s it leans the fuel to air mixture which is bad Juju.

Well things have gone quiet here. The new date was 10th April. How many starters have we got?
I actually have a chance of finishing my bike & being ready if I push on. Probably a bit silly to use this as a shake down ride, but there you go.

Mate what a ride that was!
Not sure why that cop didn't turn around when Johno did that leap up the dip on this side of the hill before he noticed him. Think we probably killed all the mosquitos in Wairarapa but there you go. & the sight of Jimmy pushing the MVX the last 10k into Featherston! Laugh - I almost pooped.

And we have our first nibble!
Nah everyone bloused out. Some of that stuff may have been made up.
(although this Johno chap almost pooped myself, fortunately he didn't turn around. Tigers are not dirtbikes, but they think they are sometimes).
I was sick during the week so I didn't finish mine. But should do in a week. Last test ride was very encouraging.

Sorry guys - My brother and family turned up so I thought I should spend a little time with him. 7 years since he was last here - lives in Viet Nam with his girlfriend and kid. Best excuse I've got.

YOu guys happen to have a ride on next week or week of 23rd - 27th? Will be lurking in your neck of the woods with work but would be nice to see let alone smell and hear the essence of 2-stroke!

So how is everyone's builds come along? Or have they all been done, ridden and blown up again by now?
I'd be keen for a mid-winter ride, the cool air might treat the 2t's better. Although I gotta sort the electrical problem on my RGV... and finish rebuilding flatmates RG150... and hope they both hold together...

Well, it's nearly August. How about a Track Day (http://www.vicclub.co.nz/tiki-read_article.php?articleId=567) on the 20th?

Don't be stupid Andrew, my bike's got 144km on it since the rebuild. Nearly due for a new rear pot.
I will endeavour to attend on some dirty diesel however.
