The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" has been "cleansed", with the entire "Happy Christmas you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot" verse edited out.

Someone did a cover of "Christmas of New York" a few years back.

IIRC, "You cheap lousy faggot" was replaced with "You're cheap and you're haggard"

I suppose at least they didn't edit it out completely.

They've been editing songs for years .... as far as I am aware, if the song contains "bad" language, there has always been a radio version and an album version of the hits ... so if you're familiar with the album version, listening to the radio version is a disappointment.

And then there are the hits that NEVER get played on radio .. or even mentioned .. I believe that when the Sex Pistol's God Save the Queen was number one in England, it was not shown on the top 10 - just a blank space ... that has to be the ultimate edit - ignore it completely ..
