View Full Version : Lanesplitting - who does it and who's been snapped doing it?

I just got ticketed for lanesplitting, however after that ordeal I followed another motorcycle through traffic, saw another mufty cop and the other bike lanesplitted and I held back, and the cop didn't chase him!!!!!
Soooo my question is who does it (we all do it!) and who's been fined for it?

There are a few threads that cover the legal side of lanesplitting on here. Have a search and see if it helps explain what happened...
greasegirl6

I also might add that i was doing it at below 20kph and the traffic had only just started moving, so I didn't think it would be much of a problem

Yeah I just read that, isn't itt funny how some cops (refer police 10/7) are all nicey nicey mr good cop and they're all polite and friendly and the dudes they're dealing with are completely intoxicated or stoned and won't co-operate and their vehicles are unwarranted and unregistered and they get treated all nice and stuff, but when you're an honest SOBER rider who takes care of their bike and makes sure it's warranted and reg'd and you're polite and co-operative with the police, they treat you like you're an idiot and you're the scum of the earth! If you're in the sort of thick traffic where you're lanesplitting, and it's not a motorcycle cop who takes offence at your wayward splitting... how on earth did you get pulled over?
I lanesplit heavily, every day. Keep it sensible, keep it polite(ish). I've split past cops stuck in their cars, split past cops on bikes. Followed cop bikes that have been splitting. Passed ambulances while I've been splitting (damn sight safer than being killed by the morons trying to "draft" the gap in traffic right behind the ambulance, that's for sure).
As a bike cop told us once, if you keep it below 50kp/h (60kp/h is about my maximum splitting speed, now), and you keep it sensible, you should be fine.

It's not Mr Plod that stops me doing it. It's the random reaction of grumpy car driver that worries me. (I'm not an angel though. If the traffic is heavy enough and the light timing is right I'll whizz up the cycle lane and get to the front at a red light. (Don't tell the lycra two wheelers huh!)

Hell, in the CBD on my NC30 and 636, I used to hit the killswitch and push them across the intersection in the pedestrian phases. Even done it right in front of cops, who always just smiled - except for one chap, who waved his finger at me making the "naughty naughty" gesture... while still having a large smile on his face.

Awesome :D I guess that's technically legal isn't it, not doing much for driver/rider relations though (how many car drivers would be trying to rip the steering wheel off while watching you filter past them, walk across the intersection, then ride away).

Pretty much my story word for word. Sorry to hear you got a ticket for it. Technically he was able to ticket you but I've never had anything but a nod or wave from cops as I've split. I pulled over once to let a local bike cop past as he was splitting a wee bit faster than I was and we nodded at each other as he went by and I just pulled back out and followed him, although he gradually pulled ahead of me.

Hey, fair is fair. If they're willing to turn their car off and push it across the intersection, then I'd have no problem with that either.

I lane-split to the front of traffic light queues regularly (because it takes so long for the queue of cars to get going, and because I don't like breathing their fumes as they do), but lane-split on the motorway only if the traffic's barely moving, and i try to stay in the right-hand side of the lane, with my right indicator on, and keep the delta between my speed and theirs as small as possible. (Difficult, as car drivers tend to stay to the right-hand side of lanes, despite "keep left" being supposedly mandatory). One of the main reasons I lanesplit is because I can, with a secondary consideration being that the VFR's side-mounted radiators are inefficient when travelling in a column of traffic, where the entrained air means no airflow through the rads, so no cooling.
I've been pulled up twice for lane-splitting, but that was 10 years ago. The first time, the bikey cop just screamed at me while frothing at the mouth. The second time a few months after that, the cop was very nice, and said he only pulled me over because I failed to indicate. I had an in-depth discussion with him about lane-splitting, passing on the left, etc. No ticket on either occasion.

Sometimes do, sometimes don't. Not being a commuter I generally try to avoid the mororway during heavy traffic times but sometimes ya just gotta go when ya gotta go.
I've been passed on a few occasion when feeling pretty relaxed about it and then on others I've been a lane splitting demon. It does tend to make the motorway pretty short....
Mind you I rode with a crew out of Mt Eden, across the city and out to Albany a few weeks back that take lane splitting to a whole new level. It made for an interesting ride

do it everyday along western motorway and then through town. I go blatently past cops in traffic, not speeding, I just don't slow down. Never, not once in 6+ years of commuting have I been nicked or even given a warning.
I think the point is it's luck of the draw on how the cop reads the situation.

ps, i always split at lights, though i try to avoid pushing my way into moving traffic - i like to get to the front and take off, so no driver can feel inconvenienced. on the motorway i'll split up to about 80k before merging back in. have never been stopped for it.
i did once get told off for riding quite a way up a median strip, which i guess is fair enough

I split whenever I feel it is safe(ish) to do so. Before the new moterway link was opened to Onehunga did many k's between cars, passing cops & stuff, no probs. did clip the odd mirror though.
Now still do at the merge southbound to the southern. Am quite naughty & pass on the left between the cars & the cones. Today there was a cop in the line so & got in line about 6 cars behind till after the merge when I passed him while splitting but not on the left of the cars if you know what I mean.
Knocked over one of the cones the other day, car moved over on me. Lucky bike is so heavy hardly even felt a bump.

Right side of middle lane (or left lane in 2 lanes) is pretty legal.
Left side of fast lane (or right lane) is not legal, and called undertaking.
In essence, its kinda like a splitting tax. Been done once for it probably about 4-5 years ago, but I was going too quick for sure. Also got pulled up and warned for being too enthusiastic in traffic a few months ago, not splitting, just using gaps in all 3 lanes to move through traffic and indicating. Bike cop felt the pace was akin to him attending an emergency with lights.
A warning and I was on my way (albeit slower).

Lanesplit everyday going along the Northwestern into town and back.
Gone past cops on bikes and in cars, not had a second look from them.
Generally split at about 70-80 if the traffic is stop start or slow, but normally at the speed limit.
As said, if cops in cars take offense your normally out of sight before they can do anything esp in heavy traffic.
But its just riding to the conditions really, and been smart and courteous about it too.

You are a hot girl on a bike, and sure catch attention as you ride home. There are many heads that turn as you go past (take that as a compliment from another female rider). Perhaps this particular cop was going to take any oppertunity to pull you over, compared to the next rider? Yes, long shot a know, but one way of looking at it.
How much was the fine? Good thing I'm usually too wide to lanesplit myself.

There are two participants of a traffic stop, usually. The Popo, and the driver/rider.
Each is human. This is a crucial factor.
Each rates from 1 to 10 on the scale of reasonableness
At the start of the 3T (traffic stop) the officers rating is normally 5, although it could be as low as 1, depending on how bad his day/life is. The driver/riders rating is normally between 3 and 7, but also depends on the day/life situation.
As the 3T progresses, the ratings will vary up and down depending on the opposing parties rating i.e. if one stays at 5, the others normally stays at 5. One party deteriorating to a 1 will no doubt detract from the others rating.
Given that each is a totally different person with a different view on why/how the 3T happened (e.g. one says it is a broken law, the other says it's revenue collecting), it's hardly surprising that the parties don't always see eye to eye.
Then the driver/rider gets on KB and outlines the full, unadulterated truth, and we all decide the Popo is a 1 at best. Trouble is, it's only their own truth.
To answer tyour question, maybe it really is just you.

Lane split every day from the shore into town, never had a problem, passed cops in cars and on bikes.
I generally split when traffic is moving slower than 40km. Usually have my GF on the back so not going to go nuts!
However just the other day was riding over the bridge, not lane splitting and doing 40ish, and a ZX14 passes me lane splitting with a flat back tyre, down to the rim!!
Granted its not a good idea to stop on the bridge, but lane splitting with a flat tyre is not exactly a good option either!

Haha good call - I'm one of those who have tried it a FEW times, and quickly realised I was completely hopeless at it, and too wide for many gaps. So I'm the one sitting in the traffic cue, stop, start... If another wide cruiser has gone through before me, I can sometimes tag along with the gap that he/she has chosen. But for me it's a very rare thing. Guess I'm just jealous!

If I'm correct, the whole of your bike needs to be to the left of the line. so even if it's just your right bar over then you're buggered legally.

Katiepie has a point - to ride within one's envelope.
As other ex London DR's here would probably testify, lane splitting was an art form there and I saw remarkably few accidents especially considering the density of traffic. But - there a bike owns the road (aside from black cabs, buses, artics, surprised tourists, the Queen etc) My filtering however, came down a notch weekends when the traffic was less disciplined and certainly here where the traffic is less disciplined by a number of degrees, plus an increased desire for self preservation in my antiquity.
Mind you sometimes there is the temptation to get an old CX500 with a bungied topbox and er well have some fun.

But as for every other time, Ive passed the POPO and never been ticketed( at a safe and accepted speed) , but I was`nt trying to do warp factor I`m getting the outta here.

Last week stopped at the basin reserve lights (the ones intersecting vic tunnel) and two cars passed shooting the red, one a black ute going up to gov house. Seems normal in these parts so if any revenue collection seems due the this would be a good place to start. I'll send a note to the WCC to add to their Manners Bus Lane "good idea at the time' pile.
Filtering assumes vehicles ahead behave in predictable manners. There are a lot of 'tricks' to pick up. When a DR it took until Mon afternoon to become re aclimatised for filtering after the weekend layoff - thats 4/5 hours london riding retraining the intuition. That was despite riding 10/12 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year with most of them in the wet or it felt like it anyway!
When I see some riders filtering they might get away with certain habits once, maybe a hundred times, but one day their number will be up sure as night follows day or bears shitting in the forest.

I've noticed one who seems somewhat zealous. He often cruises round the bays on weekends.
Incidently I stopped by a police car lane splitting by the Kilbirnie lights once and asked if I was OK - they said yes so I'll keep that as a defence. These so called road rules here need sorting out. I mean the test asks what you would do if you met a large lump of wood in the road and couldn't ride around it. The first option is to ride around it - I mean that's the sort of woollly thinking we are having to deal with.

Same as everyone else. Do it frequently but always sensibly. Split past motorway patrol cars and never had an issue. Its all in the way you are riding. Obviously if your speed differential is far greater than the traffic around you then you're going to get pulled over. You just need to be sensible about it.

Hey Katie I see you're coming in for a service next week, be sure to pop in and say HIII!!!:wavey:
Oh and the cop fined me $150 bucks so I would have thought if he was thinking like men do then he would have given me a naughty slap on the wrist (or ass hehehe) and let me off the fine, damn I knew I should have taken my helmet off!! Hahaha
Hey miss - yes booked in for Tuesday for my service and a "straighten" up from my incident last night. Will definately come and say hi - you'll recognise me when ya see me :)

What happened to you last night?
I suck at lane splitting too - I tried it once and hated it. There is one spot where 2 lanes merge that is truly awful even in a car, no one will give an inch! - I tried it on the bike and felt really uncomfortable doing it. I decided that I would rather ride the extra long way home with no traffic queues - same time to get home but a nice happy ride. :scooter:

I think I had a cop in a car chase me for lane splitting once. First he pointed his finger at me (his mum obviously never taught HIM it's rude to point - perhaps mine could give her some parenting advice) but I didn't see him do that and continued on my merry way, so he jumped in his car and chased me with lights and sirens. Luckily, I didn't see that either or I might have been late home for dinner!

OK on a serious note, I DID get pulled over for lane splitting (wrongly).
Read thread here, it's dated back in 2007.

I do it all the time, but ages ago was pulled up by a bike cop heading south on the motorway just before the motorway tunnel in wellington. The cop was really good about it, he said when he was a young'un doing the same thing a copper pulled him over and gave him a warning. He did the same to me :D

You are a hot girl on a bike, and sure catch attention as you ride home.
So where is my intoduction Katiepie.. Then I would know two hot chicks on bikes :innocent:
Good thing I'm usually too wide to lanesplit myself.
You!.... Too Wide!.... Never.

Always do it and never been ticketed. Mind you lane splitting is no big deal in Rotovegas. Maybe a line of 10 cars at most:niceone:

ah! Lane splitting. Remember it well. Normally do it every day on the commute to Welly.
Since the week before xmas the lack of cages on the road meant I had no need to.
Been on 2 weeks hol since the 10th, with a trip up norf and doing the Coro Loop, East coast etc. No need to split there. Not looking forward to getting back into the commute next week. Probably have to take it easy until the head get's back into the right space for lanesplitting.
Have split passed cops on a regular basis and never had a problem. Just take my time and crawl past them. Once I get far enough ahead and their view is blocked, back to the normal 15k-20k difference.

Classic Hawkeye.. Believe me if I keep up the 2 x bowls of wedges every Wednesday at the Royal I really will be too wide to lanesplit :P - Feel free to help me eat them.
Ahh.... an introduction huh? Oh yes, she (Greasegirl) is an absolute hottie. Plenty of folk who would like to meet her. Maybe in due time she will come out to play at the duckpond (come on Alana.... you know you want to).
And as for lane splitting, been doing it alot more recently with the lighter flows of traffic and getting a little better at it. One of those things thats take a bit of practise for me, thats for sure.

So lanesplitting is kind of illegal
And filtering stationary traffic is not?

Traffic is still light. Ponker in an MPV who decided to slow 80km in the right lane before the top of the gorge induced a minor split this morning. Being able to see all that lovely empty lane ahead of the MPV was just too much

I find those on-ramp lights a bit of a giggle, sneek up the middle & time the launch from about 2-3 cars back. cars up front have no idea whats happened as you blast on through. :chase:
dont know how legal it is though. Probably wouldnt try it next to a cop.

You can use most transit lanes. I was having a chat with a cop at one stage, when stuck in traffic (he was helping a breakdown or something, dunno) and he turned around and told me I should just use the transit lane - had to point out to him there wasn't one and I wasn't keen on splitting at that point due to him blocking the shoulder. He just laughed, so I went and split for the rest of the on-ramp.
I do think it funny when they decide to target the transit lanes and wish they'd do it more often. The one by work is odd, as it used to have a picture of a motorcycle on the board, but I'm sure they've covered it up. I do still use it and sometimes think I should look at the first board again (often it's only the first board with the picture).
