A senario thats bugged me . Just wonder what you guys make of it.
At a racetrack somewhere in Australasia
Its a hot sunny day. Untimed practice for the next days racing. A bit of a hodgepodge of race classes are allowed on the track together.
The track is a fantastic setup for bikes being wide enough to allow a range of different lines to "work".
Rider A has been out on the track for a few laps. Rider B pulls onto the track some distance behind him.
Two laps go by and rider B has caught up with rider A.
Rider A has been taking a low to mid line round one right hand corner so to the right side and into the track middle.
Aproaching that corner on his lap 4 rider B accelerates and pulls to the left hand side of the track in order to pass rider A.
Rider A pulls across to the left and rides up the right exhaust pipe and tailpiece of Rider B's bike which resulted in rider A crashing dramatically. Rider B has damage to the exhaust and tailpiece but not major.
So in this senario who is responsible for the incident if anybody?

rider A should race in a lower class

Rider B did the right thing to size up rider A for a lap or so, rider A should have beef with rider B. Rider A changed his game plan, in saying that, it would look totally different to someone watching.

at pretty much all practice/have a go days, the responsibility ALWAYS falls on the passing rider, not the rider being passed. a race is a slightly different story but theres not really any reason to force a race move on a practice day that causes a crash.

....racing is about getting ahead of the rider in front...i cant see the point of being pissed off or ..in the wrong...i know im holding up some much faster riders than myself at times, and when they take my line and scoot under me or over me, a mm is as good as a mile...then its up to me not to fuck myself up by riding into them...a bit like swimming with white sharks...they're only dangerous if they eat you......riders that knock other riders off on sighting or warm up laps tho...they're a different story..

The onus is always on the overtaking rider to pass safely....even if the dickhead in front changes line this should be factored in and allowed for.

And yes, i know this is great in theory & hard in practise but remember there are only a very few of us who are racing for sheepstations.

So am I allowed to change lines when someone is trying to pass me, smash them then say it was there fault? Nope

Yeah it was a practice day, ripped my exhaust off and I think it ripped his thumb off. Felt sorry for the guy though talked to him since and he is a real nice guy and he is back riding and racing so all good.

It was a track day and there was no passing on the inside prob would have been safer it turns out!

Both at fault.

A needs to hold his line
B needs to pass safely

sorry dude ya can't have it both ways-chicken and egg
If A had held his line then B's overtake was safe OR if B hadn't tried to pass then it diddn't matter what A did on track.

Actually if your on the race track you can't just hand responsibility completely over to someone else. Sure, if your looking for someone to blame then go ahead. If you want to prevent something similar happening then everyones input into the incident needs to be taken into account.

I have had riders passing me take me out, and I have been taken out passing riders, both times weren't my fault (important to note this is in my own opinion). Either way I got grumpy for a while then got over it, best was is to talk it out with the other party.
Race day, track day, rider training day, driving to the track even, sometimes shit just happens. Its how you come back from it is what defines a rider.

Probably a shared responsibility thing (racing incident) but I'm leaning towards Rider B having more responsibility.

At the end of the day if you want to get past somebody the onus is on YOU to execute the move properly.

It seems odd to be worrying about apportioning blame to somthing that happened years ago.

Is this how sad, bitter, old men are born?

MNZ issued the race license to the riders in the first place. What responsibility do they have, may I ask?

Rider about to pass is the one in control of the situation, - however the reality is the more experienced rider rarely comes out second best when things get tight, be they the hit-ee or the hit-er:bye:

If its not clear cut who's to blame then they're both at fault I reckon, Takes 2 to tangle....& if it only involves the 2 of them then who cares?
'Tis racing after all....
