I have been through since then, although getting lost it was fine, no gates...:)
The locals were unhappy bout the forestry though, seems they are saying it is private...

Pohokura Road bottom end has had a gate for MANY YEARS....
I commented on here about this back on 2008, Top end is still open.

Access past the old orchard along the old napier taupo road - closed by the bottom gate and un-ridable scrub from the other end of pohokura road.....

The western end of Pohokura Rd that gives access to Kaingaroa via the Waipunga Road & then Main Rd/South Rd on to Minginui, is a public access easement to give access to the Whirinaki Forest Park. According to DOC Murupara it should only ever be closed off if there is an extreme fire risk. (the gate at that end is actually on Waipunga Rd, not the Pohokura bit)
Call DOC Rangitaiki area office & ask about 'access to Whirinaki' from SH5 & they should be able to tell you if it is open or not.

Interestingly, according to a rough comparison of Google Earth & cadastral maps, the gate at the eastern end of Pohokura Rd is actually on the surveyed public road which still continues on around to Waipunga, on paper at least, it looks like rough single track & scrub from around 1/2 way.

Yep, it would be good to have a poke around, but rumour suggests that the track peters out into the scrub, I nosed up there a few years back & looked fairly unused, there is quite possibly a big slip or 2 in there somewhere that is impassable as otherwise local hunters etc would have been driving it & keeping it open. You sometimes see a few guys ripping around there on trailbikes & I'd expect they'd give it a go too if it was possible.

Rumour also has it that the locals in there can be less than friendly & may not be very receptive to the argument that you are actually on a public road.

If it turned out to be a good adv route however one might be tempted to ask the local council for an explanation as gates on public roads are a bit of a no-no.

Cheers

I heard about nasty locals up there from a 4x4 mate.... Long time ago.

If its a road, who has a gas set?????

ROAD OPEN!!!!

Google maps shows the gate as being on pohokura road?????? Looks like waipunga road starts at the split by the bridge??

But the map was probably surveyed in manilla by someone that has no blooooody idea!!!

Yep thats it. Pohokura Rd is actually the old main road. I've seen an up to date cadastral survey map & it shows the boundarys in the same place as Google. Interestingly the east bit with the gate on is shown as road reserve, the west bit from about 1/2 way on to the bridge isn't.

No gas set but I gotta generator & a 9" grinder :shifty:

I came through the Pohokura rd from east to west, about 8 years ago. The east end was straight forward. The middle bit was a bit overgrown but we were on the old Tarmac in places. I think there was only on or two "houses"/dwellings up there. Not sure who put the big F off barricade in the way. I guess the locals must have a key
