View Full Version : Street Triple vs Shiver?

I've been seriously looking at a street triple as they get great reviews. Was hoping to have one in the shed by xmas but couldn't quite make the deal stick. So starting looking at other options and came across a shiver at emoto in chch and it looks great. It would be great if someone could give me feedback on either of these bikes and sooner the better. (the wife has sugested I get a another bike this summer and not wait till next year so don't want to give her a chance to change her mind!!!) Also if anyone has either of these bikes for sale let me know, I'm cashed up and ready to buy.
Cheers

Yep.
I believe Hitcher loves his Shiver, but isn't happy with getting parts.

and I know of a really smart, very tastefully accessorised Ducati S4RS tricolore for sale, with exciting goodies like slipper clutch, acres of CF, super bright LED indicators, loads of Rizzoma gear and the list goes on and on....

I posted a link yesterday for someone else on my long-term evaluation of the Triple: http://geoffjames.blogspot.com/2010/08/triumph-street-triple-review-revisited.html
If one of your criteria is riding 2 up, the Shiver may be a better prospect as the rear pegs make for a pretty uncomfortable experience over distance. That excepted, I came from a Blackbird to the Triple and still absolutely love it.
You probably won't finally know for sure until you ride both of them. I actually thought that I'd end up with a Ducati Monster or a Thruxton Bonneville until I test rode the Triple. Knew for sure within half an hour of getting on it that it ticked all the boxes whereas the other two bikes didn't quite do it by comparison.

My son has one he bought new in 08 and he won't part with it for anything. It goes like the clappers when you want it to, can commute easily, has a ridiculously torquey engine (pulls hard from 50kmh in top!) is as smooth as silk and has good resale (like all Triumphs). I don't know much about Aprilias, but in my opinion the Street Triple is one of the best bikes ever built and if I wasn't 6 ft 4 I'd own one in a heartbeat (I don't fit them all that well).
And because they fit most Daytona 675 bits you can tweak and enhance very easily.

Striple kicks its a-rse in every respect:
Obviously posted by a short a-rse. As a gentleman of about 183cm in height, and about 40,000km of experience riding a Shiver, I can vouch for its superb ergonomics - it has great legroom and arrangement of controls, without impeding its cornering ability. I have ridden a Street Triple. While it was fun, it's not a bike I would enjoy riding for any longer than about an hour. Its legroom is cramped and its seat leaves much to be desired, even in the rudimentary comfort stakes.
On the subject of parts for Aprilias, the issue isn't the availability of parts as such. The issue is the inane ineptitude of the so-called New Zealand official distributor. Parts can be had in a matter of days, for reasonable prices, courtesy of AF1 (the USA's biggest Aprilia dealer) based in Texas. Fortunately Texas isn't required for oil filters and other consumable parts.
The Shiver also has 20,000km service intervals, probably another area where the Striple fails to kick a-rse.

Street Triple all the way! (I am biased however) I have a 2010 Striple.
I am 6 foot, 85-90kg (haven't weighed myself in a while ), and Street Trip is absolutely fine ergonomically. There are a bunch of after market parts you can get (however Triumph do charge a little too much for bits of plastic like the fly-screen or belly pan etc)
The basic Street Trip is fine, but if you are keen for track days then fork out the extra for adjustable suspension and better breaks!!
As for two up, My GF and I have done a few longer trips, and yes it does get a little uncomfortable if you don't stop regularly.
Fantastic engine noise! Awesome on the twisties! Have ridden 3000km on it so far, no problems mechanically. It has plenty of low down torque (which is usable in the real world!)
Triple has 10000km service intervals (obviously better to change the oil more frequently than that). And requires fully synthetic oil. It also runs best on 95 or 98.
Any questions send me a PM, happy to help you out! :woohoo:

I wouldn't have bought a broken Street Triple, personally. I'm not convinced I'd then proceed to break it further.

Irrespective of brand, it's nice to see naked "natural riding style" middleweights commanding attention. After all, they're shitloads more fun and more versatile than sprotsbikes ever could be.

I know! Pains me that people consider a Z750 a "Girl's Bike".
Oh yeah, I'd be happy with either Striple or Shiver, but my licence would disappear on the 2nd or 3rd ride on the Street Triple. I can't behave myself on one.

The Striple does seem to be a bit of a cop magnet. When I picked mine up from the shop, I only made it 1.5km down the road before being pulled over!! :innocent:

Why it does. I got pulled over for the first time tonight on the motorway home. Made to ride off from the shoulder through all sorts of crap on the side of the road - just after I picked it up from the shop from a puncture repair. Thanks Mr. Officer.

I think I really need to do a trip to Christchurch and get my bum on a shiver and try one out. How do you striple riders find your bikes on longer trips, say 600km in a day? without to many stops.
Blackbird
14th December 2010, 05:56
I'm only 5'8"and find the Striple just about perfect ergonomically. Not withstanding Hitcher's comments about the stock seat (the size and shape of your arse plus your weight has as much to do with comfort as the seat design itself), I find 700km days just stopping for gas just fine. I completed the 1600 km Grand Challenge in 21 hours in October with the addition of an Airhawk air cell pad (~NZ$130 direct from the States inc postage) and my arse was perfectly comfortable. Wrists and arms ached a bit because it was very windy in places but it was actually more comfortable than either my Blackbird or BMW K100RS that I'd used on previous GC's.
Oh, and I'm 63 so it's not a case of being super-fit!

Same with me - done trips the length of the North Island in a day no problems.
I splashed out on a Sargent seat for 300 km+ sized trips and it makes an amazing difference for both rider and pillion comfort
FWIW I'm around 5'8.
On the issue of get a Speed - fantanstic bike no doubt about it. However, I have flirted with one twice and prefer the Striple. I felt more merged with the Striple as opposed to "on" the Speed, I find the 675 engine was more engaging and it absolutely carves due to it's lightness.
Having dragged them in a straight line with friends, there's absolutely nuthin in it as any power to the advantages to the 1050 are nullified by weight the increased weight....however no-one on a Speed would catch me in twisties...of that I am convinced

Speed in a straight line is great for losing your license.
Take the best handling bike and enjoy the twisties.
By my eye it should be the Shiver. Better brakes, better suspension?, longer suspension travel, wider bars.

Like LBD has pointed out..... Monster's can corner and are very light, mine weights in now at 151kg's with full tank. Have riden the Speed triple and is on par with the monsters, it all comes down to taste and "fit" on the bike, thats it and the end of the day... you can debate all the pro's and con's for years, but it's what bike suits you and gives you the feeling of control and feedback you want from a bike. Try them all, it's you who will be riding it :)
