View Full Version : My brand new whip - 1969 Renault 10

I've been in Aussie for four months now, for all the monies I've earned it seems to have gone into debt repayment and paying for expensive requirements like a new laptop, flashy DSLR camera, airfares to Malaysia for MotoGP etc... and probably about 3-4K worth of trans-tasman travel :shutup::shit:
Anyway, basically I've been spending most of my time off being productive and working towards my pilots licence which has lead me to the situation where I don't have the need or the time for a modern sportsbike like I was intending/hoping would be the case. I do have a Vespa ET2 50cc to use if I see the need for it, but after being restricted to 52kmh for all my travels over a two month period I was about ready to commit suicide. So i was browsing ebay for cheap bikes as you do when I though "fuck it, have a look for a cheap car" - thats when I found my new wheels. Yep, a fandangled four wheeler it is.
I went against all judgement and advice and bought it sight unseen with only a few obscure internet car reviews to go on. $850 later and there was a guy at my door handing me the keys to my new ride and running me through all the hows, whys and wheres of the little beast - some quite friendly people here in Adelaide.
So here it is, my 1969 Renault 10 - 1109cc and 50hp of rear engine, rear wheel drive, French magnificence.

I once bought a Renault 15 for $30. It had a good battery and a tank of fuel. Once the fuel tank was empty I felt it would be over-capitalising to fill it up.
Good times

Are you gay?
No. Sorry to dissapoint but you'll have to look elsewhere. It actually does quite a good job of getting attention from the ladies.
needs a supercharger on it.
Gonna start with a cam, new exhaust and maybe dual carbies first. If those motor dies then I'm thinking MR2 Supercharged motor or converting it to electric - there is a shitload of space up the front for batteries
Can we have a fly by video?
It's in the pipeline, next day off in Adelaide isn't until January 14th!
Do you fit inside it?
Yep, heaps of room. Actually really comfy too.
That looks nice. How does it go?
Starts first pop, runs smooth. It's no rocket ship but it gets me around and it doesn't get left behind in traffic - can't say the same for the scooter.
Does it do good skids?
I've been trying to get it to step out but I'm obviously not being mean enough. Gonna try and fins somewhere obscure to give it a rip at some doughies. They crush your car if you get caught over here!

Sheesh mate - your priorities are all wrong ..
I've been in Aussie for four months now, for all the monies I've earned it seems to have gone into debt repayment and paying for expensive requirements like a new laptop,
Why ? THat'll never go past 52kph ..
flashy DSLR camera,
Nor will that ...
airfares to Malaysia for MotoGP etc...
Cool ... that's OK
and probably about 3-4K worth of trans-tasman travel :shutup::shit:
Why?
That's a lot of money on toys - and not a bike amongst them ...

Still got my TRX850 back in NZ which will be getting a new exhaust for christmas as well as a dyno tune/run and a tickling by Robert Taylor in the new year.
Next year I'll be taking advantage of the new cheaper fares from Adelaide to Auckland and will be hitting up Hampton Downs and Taupo hopefully once every 2-3 months.
If I get a bike over here it's going to be a 1970's Honda CB twin of some description - I've already got a project/design in mind but just need a suitably priced platform to start the work on. For now the priority is getting into the flying more, saving a deposit for a house and some travel with MotoGP/WSBK events tied in the mix! Already sorted for Phillip Island with 'gold' tickets including pit walks on two days and complimentary food and beer, and you know I'm gonna get my monies worth of beer.

My first thought was that it's a good candidate for someone (Richard or James, most likely) to bring to a Top Gear challenge :)

We had one of those for a while - it was EggsZachary the same model AND colour as that one. They're actually not a bad beasty: 4 wheel disk brakes isn't bad for a '60s car. Drove it around NZ in the early '80s, and were marooned in the pub in Methven for a time waiting for a wheel bearing to be couriered from Ashburton.
We had only a couple of other problems. Crossing the Harbour Bridge on a windy day without a bag of sand in the front; they're very light, and run only 10PSI in the front tyres. And some less than competent autoelectrician rewired the starter solenoid using one from another car and got the wiring wrong, so if you held the key for a millisecond or more too long the solenoid wouldn't cut the power to the starter and it would keep going. I got really pissed off after being up to my elbows in Renault at the wake of my wife's grandad's funeral, so sat down and worked out how it should have been wired, swapped some leads over, and it was good as gold after that. Ran like a top. Oh yeah - and we toured the Sarf Oilund in summer, and couldn't turn the heater off. And the gearchange was a wee bit vague, seeing the lever was so far from the gearbox. For all its idiosyncracies, it was a comfortable car, and OK to drive.

They were kinda cute, a stretched version of the Renault 8. How to make a bigger car, stretch the front and the back but don't bother stretching the passenger cabin or the wheelbase - so just make it long in all the wrong places lol
Nice buy all the same.

Hmmm... wouldn't mind one of those new (VW) Skoda Octavia wagons!

Must have been kept by the last owner, I'll have to invest in one.

Nope. :sunny:

Met a few when I was cleaning it... spiders seem to love it as even though I had thoroughly cleaned it and removed all existing spider webs, when I went out the next morning the rear bumper had three separate webs already

Everything I read about them from the UK, Australia and NZ seemed to say that there were great cars for what they are - it was the Americans who had all the problems with it not being a V8 and "bigger so its safer".

Cheers. Its much easier to find info on the 8's but you're dead right. I kinda like the look of it, though I'd happily accept a Gordini spec 8!
Sorry, Gareth. Couldn't resist...
C'mon maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate!
