Guys,

Went to the shop looking for some gear and was wondering how RJays stands up to Rev'it, AlpineStar, Dainese, etc? Will it give me the protection if I were to crash and slide, fall off, etc? What should I look for when buying gear? Where is the best place to buy good gear at a decent price in Auckland?

The main thing you should look for in gear is if it fits properly. Even the best gear is useless if it slides off your body as you're taking an impromptu date with the tarmac at 200kmh.

Leather is best. This is because some synthetic gear tends to melt from the heat of the friction as you are sliding down the road at warp 9 factor.

Make sure your gear has plenty of padding in it - around the knees, ass and thighs in pants, and shoulders, elbows and back in a jacket. It goes without saying that you should also get proper motorbike boots, leather gloves and a full face helmet.

I recommend good synthetic gear if you're just starting off, good quality leather jackets and pants are very expensive.

Rjays is ok as long as it fits you.

It's more of a budget product, IMO.

i've got an Rjays helmet and mesh jacket, helmet's 2 years old and the foam compacted so much, it's at least 1 size bigger now than when i bought it, leather creacked after 6 mths too. linning on the jacket totaly disintergrated within a month. maybe i just had bad luck with their gear, but wont be buying anymore

Mrs Berg had Rjays jacket and pants and they were OK. The thing I didn't like about them was they didn't zip together. She has now gone Teknics and while more expensive she finds it much better.

Hasn't RJay's rebranded as San Remo, or is that change just for its bike luggage and accoutrements rather than biker clothing?

Not to mention that if new leather is fitted correctly - it feels so tight you could be mistaken for a dick inside a size too small condom....

Leather it seems is the way to go with the appropriate fitting. Anyone know of a warehouse or outlet that sells them for a reasonably price in Auckland?

Thats a Stone Guard for a Motorcross rider to wear under a light shirt. Not for a Road bike.
Buy Leather and get what you need to carry you forward with your future riding.

Friggin cagers don't look and certainly don't see black.

The industry needs to help the riders, why not be first and make a difference?? :shit::shit::shit:

I have an Rjays jacket, about 1 yr old now. Have had a slide at about 30km, no bruises or scrapes, jacket was fine. Was waterproof until 6 months but now the red bits down the arms are not even pretending to be waterproof & I have tried putting waterproofing stuff on them & everything. Wouldnt get it again, would try Quasi gear, did a ride with a guy who had a leather jacket from him, it was pissing down the whole ride & it never leaked, i thought that was bloody amazing for leather not to leak.

Wearing black leather is all part of ''the look'' and how bikers are percieved in general in the minds of a small percentage (of bikers)
Quasi (or anyone for that matter) wouldn't move race suits if they were just black, thats a given, once again, its all part of 'the look' but this time....at the track.
Thanks to Barry Sheene many years ago, those that go fast in same direction moved away from the drab black look and into colourful suits, one step closer to a tie and cufflinks.
I have always had a bit of colour, but my next jacket will be a re'vit and black.
Some may say its a personal choice to wear black, but if the choice was out there maybe that wouldn't be the case? in saying that, I saw a guy once in a full red Ducati one piece at the Puhoi Pub and he looked like a homo, drinking a ginger beer didnt' help...

My jacket is pink and white, and I get a bit of shit from other women about it - but I love it - a lot of women seem to think that pink is gross and that woman should be wearing black and looking cool.
My point is that I am easily seen compared to black leather. The only downside is that I am instantly recognisable and therefore have to be on my best behaviour at all times!

Many distributors/shops have tried over the years, all it does is cost them money.
Typical customer reaction upon seeing some spangly red/white (whatever) coloured jacket is 'Ooh....that's nice, do you have it in black?'
Consequently the coloured stuff has piss all sales and ends up getting specialed off at a loss (or close to it) and distributor/shop vowing never to try that again...

Yup we sold all our Rapids at below cost, these where a red and a blue colour, now we wont do colours.
We will however do these, the Viper, and these are extremely visable to other road users.
The Viper, cost is $395, full Qrace spec with Knox

A few years back, I owned and wore a black leather jacket, then bought a mostly red jacket to replace it. I tried alternating between wearing all black and wearing mostly coloured gear, on alternate days. I found that on the "all black days" (including the bike and helmet), people seemed to make more room for me, perhaps because I was more intimidating? Whatever - it didn't seem to make any difference to visibility.
Once my red jacket was due for replacement, I went for black again, for the sole reason that I commmute by bike most of the time, and anything that's not black (or perhaps some variation of soot coloured) soon ends up sooty and dirty anyway, and is a pain to wash. Plus black leather is very easy to restore to blackness if scuffed: a bit of black boot polish or shoe dye will do the trick.

Amen, I like all black gear, black helmet with tinted visor looks mean lol!

Ok ok, I got the picture, everyone wants to look mean but i hear nearly nobody say i want to be safe and seen. The pink outfit sounds terrific and I think I did see someone wearing that at Holeshot in Auckland checking out a few bikes yesterday. It just stands out!

I am not saying I want to wear pink, but as a conservative rider I want to keep the shiny side up and I want to live a little longer. One serious accident is enough and I don't want anything to happen to me or other because some cager c$%* didn't see me!.

You go right ahead and buy your black stuff and I will come to your funeral during the next remembrance ride !!!

All one can do is try to keep a look out for bad drivers on our roads whatever we wear, headlights on all the time must be a big help. :)

Yeah, if it was 8.30ish yesterday morning then that was me! We were dropping Mr Hellokitty's bike off for a service. See what I mean!! I am known to all

Luckily for me, I love pink and the fact I am highly visible makes it even better.

I have noticed that I bright as I am, I have found that the only people that see me, are the ones that are looking for me. There still seems to be many cars that pull out in front of me as if I am invisible.

No problem tri-boy, the pompous ones don't want to say their farewell to those without an open mind, especially when they have a judgemental nature
