14th December 2010, 21:02
Okay Dusty Butt goers,

As per last year I'm again organising a trip down to Fairlie via Orari Gorge station

I'll need to know numbers to advise the two farms

Departure will be from The Caltex servo station Yaldhurst/Russley rd's (near Airport) 9:00am sharp!
Will stop at Ashburton Subway to grab some lunch that we can eat part way thru the Gorge
All welcome, route is big bike friendly (isn't that right Kenny!)
Cheers Matt

Fark.....in the fear of coping grief, I was considering trailering the bike down to the start. After 1000km I dont know if im hard enough to ride home as well  I might have to reconcider now?

Hey Matt I was following you guys down Johns road on Saturday (on my way to Ruapuna for one last blast on the Motard before DB11 conversion take place) the traffic was holding me up to be able to give ya a toot!

:facepalm:Old fella getting forgetfull & all confused---- again.
AND---Matt----that first river we went up,with all those bloody great rocks, was that the Rangitata???
We aventually get onto (looking @ map) Orari river road,---right???
Thing is----bringing the Super Sherpa down on the van,& dont want to ride TOO far on the fast boring bits, ringing it,s nuts off,so will go close to the gorge befor unloading.:yeah:
Get wife to go round to Fairlie in van.

I just know I'm asking for it too but got to say it was a nice drive home in the van after the dream was over last year.
Riding down the straight highway on a mission to get home was a mind numbing drag that dulled the experience after the DB route checking run last weekend.
Wonder if I can convince Janet to bring the van down on the Sunday evening of the big weekend to come.

I haven't met Buddha#81 yet so I thought a bit premature to give him grief over the mentioning of a trailer, and helenoftroy is far too nice to hassle after she too supported the idea, but transalper, now that we have met a few times and gotten past the niceties stage I’m quite happy to give you sh*t :bleh: Transporting an ADV bike on a trailer when there are no impassable obstacles such as oceans, canyons, flooded rivers etc is not allowed, it says so in the rules  Don’t be surprised if we pass each other on the street and I pretend I don't know you

My plan after the DB is to crash the night in Fairlie, then rack up another 880km by heading to Karamea via Haast, haven't done the Haast Pass Highway yet, its apparently stunning so I'm really looking forward to it.

Pffft, trailer :oi-grr:

Just checking now, you know Sunday afternoon/evening the DB finishes in Fairlie not Ranfurly,

But James,my son who lives in Nelson,& who you may see rideing an old black/purple honda cbx750 around, is talking abought comming on the Dustybutt. If he doe,s he may swap the Honda for the XT ,or the F650 i have here. Then again,he may use the CBX, he,s done a lot of Sth.Is backroads on it,allready, including the Rainbow & Porika track.:blink:If he does, would,nt be suprized if the fairing fell off, looking @ that rocky stuff Ryan,s found.:shit:

Sorry Padmei, I don't do the GPS thing.
We will stop for Subway and fuel if necessary at Ashburton then head to the shingle at Orari Bridge, from there it's no more than 60km's of gravel and farm tracks coming out near Lake Opuha near Fairlie, total distance Ashburton to Fairlie would be around 100km's
Hope this helps

Blue mountain station is the majority of the ride and he was fine. Last year he did ask for a $20pp koha but this year didn't mention it. I'm thinking I might collect a small koha say $5pp to grease the wheels and keep us motorcycle riders in the good books for future access, sure you guys can handle that

Cheers for that little extra run Matt.
GPS recorded a time of 5 hours 34 minutes for me from departing the meeting point to getting in to the Gladstone after gassing up in Fairlie and a total of about 208km travelled.
Could be useful as a reference when people start asking those questions beforehand assuming it happens again.
Also big bikes with road bias tyres not recommended if it's wet and there's a bit of a gooey riverbed may be involved while getting to the start of the gorge which appeared hard work for those same big and loaded bikes... on road bias tyres
Made for good video though I suspect (haven't watched it yet to see)

but I'm feeling now I done it once I may revert back to taking the Van to the Dusty Butt starting point again as it was really nice last year having a gentle drive home down the long straight roads after Geraldiene.

The Orari Gorge ride was great - one of the best for me in years. The Tiger made it with no dramas and inspite of the rain, it was a fun ride. Made it back to Auckland yesterday intact and unscratched after an abbreviated 1-dayer DB (600k).
Hope to be back next year, possibly on my other steed (WR450). Thanks Matt. Cheers, John.
