I found this video of an XL350 on you tube. I used to have one almost exactly the same except mine had the lower "rally" front guard. I never thought I'd get the chance to see and here one again! Mine met with a sorry end but suffice it to say It was my first real adventure bike! Maybe some of you would like to share some videos of your first steads.

I know of three of them in a lockup. They are keeping company with a couple of other classic trailies from that era. Never really fancied them myself, but they are a nice piece of kit.

Classic! I had a mate who's old man bought him one of those "brand spanker"; it had the rainbow stipes on the tank from memory...I remember being jealous at the time but I'm over it now of course

I know someone in Wellington who restores old Honda trailies, SHE has over a dozen of them in mint condition and floor to ceiling stacks of frames, motors etc.

Snap - 1976 XL350. I got it with only about 4000km (miles?) on it. Probably be a bit gutless if I rode it now but I thought it was awesome. I had it for quite a while and used it for just about everything you can use a motorcycle for. Good times :sunny:

Yup.
But Oscar is right, it's wayyyyy over priced.
But I still like the old dogs, even a XR500RB etc would do.
An ol two stroker is very cool, but there is summit about filthy big 4strokes that jiggle me buttons.
Handle like shit.
Can't stop, fly like a lump of lead, and land like a dead cat, but oh, I do like them.

I bet that YZ490 sounds like a proper big bore 2 stroke should, before the water jackets etc muffled them a bit. Love to see an IT490 again. What sizes did the big ITs come in, there was a 400, then what? A 465 and a 495?

The XL500s, I wonder how easy it is to get 23" rubber for the front wheel?

No problem.

Just not a lot of choice.

Easy to lace up a 21" to the hub though.

I had one of these back in the day...well not quite it was a YZ250 frame with the 400 motor....nice combination for riding fire breaks around Marlbrough... but sold it after breaking couple ribs and an ankle on it.

Been done before.

I had two XL350s, both '74. They were what the 250 motosport should have been to start with. Can't say I learned to ride on 'em, but some of my crashes were well refined by the acquaintence. Great bikes, you could make almost anything of them, my second one ended up at 410cc.

The standard shocks were shite, the forks needed help and the third gear needed keeping an eye on. If you whittled the weight down they were easy to ride, very forgiving.

I found one in reasonable nick a few years ago, could have had it for next to nothing. But you can never go down to the same river...

...and the cam chain tensioner mount wasn't much chop either!

Now that I never had much of a problem with.

Cam bearings, machined the head on both of them, one got split rollers and the other got split whitemetal shells.
