Hey!
Dunno if you guys have done this before but im stuck between Pink Floyd(david gilmour) - Comfortably Numb and Led Zeppelin(jimmy page) - Dazed and Confused, in fact anything by Jimmy Page or Pink Floyd quite simply rules. Also Sweet Child O' Mine intro Slash-GNR rules.
What do you guys think?:D

Shit theres sooo many, where do you start?
Hmm, live version of 'Comfortably Numb' from 'The Delicate Sound of Thunder' by Pink Floyd is one of my all time faves. When I used to play guitar and I was learning it, my tutor (John Hooker) said something like "If I played that, I'd put that guitar down and never pick it up again. How could you top it?" Pain and suffering made into music....
I still love the solo from 'Hotel California'. Eric Claptons stuff on Phil Colins "Let it rain down on me" still gives me goose bumps. GNR 'Sweet Child o Mine'. Peter Greens 'Need your love so bad(?)' sounds great yet is easy to play. Brian May (Queen) on 'Gimme the Prize' (the song that made me start playing) and 'Who wants to live forever'.
'Wasted Years' & 'Alexandra the Great'- Iron Maiden, the intro for 'Thunder Struck' AC/DC. Pretty much everything that Stevie Ray Vaughn ever did, but especially a live version of 'Texas Flood' I heard while bedding down at the Hokinui Moonshine rally once- fricken awesome! Also love both the guitar and sax parts in 'Baker Street'- can't remember the artist. Heaps of Mark Knopflers stuff, but especially 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Brothers in Arms' and 'Going home'. 'Dead or Alive', Bonjovi

Joe Satriani without a doubt.
There's one bit in 'One big rush' that is just bloody awesome- must've used every trick in the book to do that one, which is what Eddie Van Halen is supposed to have done for the solo in 'Beat It' (MJ). He turned up, listened to the track, played two solo's that used every trick in his arsenal, got paid a pitance, and thought the no one would ever hear it cause Micheal Jackson was black....

Joe Satriani without a doubt.
Too overblown (or to quote what was said about Mozart: "Too many notes").
He's a great guitarist alright, but obviously hasn't heard of 'less is more'.
I like Dave Gilmour and Jimmy Page, but there are others people probably wouldn't even think of, like Lindsay Buckingham on the live versions of "Go Insane" (fantastic acoustic solo complete with lots of harmonics) and "I'm So Afraid". I also reckon some of the guitarists David Bowie's had playing for him, like Robert Fripp for his "Scary Monsters" stuff (very technical), and Mick Ronson (who also played for Lou Reed on "Transformer").

Brian May is a stand out for what he can do on his guitar without effects. The brass jazz band on Night at the Opera was mind blowing - all his guitar, even the slide trombone.
Until I started to play the sax I never realised that what I thought were guitar solos on the first Roxy Music album were Andy McKay's oboe.I'm pleased to see so many putting up David Gilmour - never has so much been said with so few notes,a counter point to all those oh so fast guitarists.

I've seen Dennis Chambers on two continents and here in NZ and he's a horrible soloist. Uninvolving, uninspired, and deeply aware of his own "stature" within the drumming community. Steve Smith on the other hand is humble, clever, and profoundly good in both a solo setting or group environment.
Stop apologising. Drummers are far better people and musicians than bloody guitar weenies. Just trying to keep things off topic.

How about Carlos Alomar playing with David Bowie - Width of a Circle (David Live at Tower Philadelphia). Sounds like every note came from the depths of his soul. Awesome stuff.
Without a doubt for me it's the solo in "Sympathy For The Devil" by The Stones.

Someone said in another post he's playing folk music. Anyone know for sure.
Anyone know who the guiterist is from Hawkwind. Have a couple of their albums. IN SEARCH OF SPACE and DOREMI FASOL LATIDO.

Tom Morello anyone?
I had a quick read through and didn't see (although I could well have missed it) someone who should be on here, angus young from ac/dc. Thunderstruck, man that is such a good effort, even though its not complicated keeping that up for the whole length of the song is amazing. He does some very nice work in alot of their other songs too.
Also rate slash from G&R, rate alot of their songs highly aswell. Jimmy Page is another one that needs mention. Although all of these guys are before my time, so haven't really heard of any other old skool guys.
Another multi talented guy is Dave Grohl (Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters lead singer/guitarist and various other appearances), damn good singer/songwriter and foo fighters are mint as.

6 pages and no-ones mentioned Ritchie Blackmore yet? (by name, someone did name a track) especially from the Made In Japan set.
Nor has anyone mentioned Tommy Bolin or Steve Morse, both of whom have featured in the DP line-up.
Then there's Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower, Les Paul, Hank Marvin, Eddie van Halen...
As for Richie (without a "t", coz that's how he spells it) Blackmore, there are way, way better examples of his virtuosity than what is on Made in Japan (good though it is)
Skyrider - These days Richie Blackmore is playing largely acoustic medievil-inspired folky sort of stuff. Band name is Blackmore's Night.

Les Claypool
Tony Levin
Frank Gambale
Scott Henderson
Victor Wooten
Larry Coryell
Robben Ford
Another Violinist for you Violin freaks is Boyd Tinsley
John Schofield
Charlie Hunter
Those guys can all solo like crazy. In ways that would leave Slash wondering why he took up guitar.
He must be very proud lol :niceone:

Smart Ass. I just take notice of music stuff as I am a musician myself and I find it of interest to me.
Oh, not a guitarist but without his invention rock music would suck...Jim Marshall. And Les Paul and Leo Fender are also legends to the guitar world

Yep and also produced the whole first foo fighters album by himself (played every instrument etc) and also has appeared for queens of the stoneage and tenatious d on their albums (not in latest queens of stonage album), I'm sure he has done others aswell. Would rate him as one of the most versatile and talented rock musicans in the world currently. :Punk:

No, but a few of their best albums are 'Roadhawks' and 'Astounding Sounds, Amazing music' Check out tracks 'Hurry On Sundown' and 'The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon'.

Nah. Actually a drummer. And James Marshall owes a HUGE debt to Pete Townshend, without whom the Marshall stack would never have existed.
My 1983-vintage JCM800 Marshall stack rocks.
Had a 1982 Fender Statocaster. Nice guitar. But my Les Paul is better.

You just rated "0" on the Gheyness meter.
That should be enough.
Or you could google. But don't blame me if you suddenly develop a taste for lycra and roller skates (not even the inline kind).

Some of the Dream Theatre stuff is good I've been told.
But my favorite at the moment would have to be James Wilkinson's Elenor O'Rigby.
Fantastic finger work and works the whole guitar over.
Well he's OK for a Kiwi anyway.
guess who im going to say has the best solo...........
Slash- I recon November rains one of his best, and i saw him in concert at velvet revolver, so eh

Ugh. Marshall stack and Les Paul guitar... blandest sound in the world. Every pop-rocker and nu-punk tosser has that set up. (Sorry to those that do)
I'm an ESP fan myself... And Mesa for amps
Hammett WAS taught by Satch, as was Vai. Vai is awesome.
And for pure guitar sex, Racer X is a good way to go!

I'm 15 and know this stuff
Children of Bodom have good solos in their songs. I don't think they have a song without one do they?
Yeah every song. Only the demo tape has songs without solos from memory!
Ever heard tokyo warhearts? A song on that called 'war of razors' pits one of the top 3 keyboarders in the world (Janne) against Alexi.. it's an amazing solo-off :D

That reminds me; did anyone know that Joe Satriani toured with Deep Purple? I can't remember what year it was (gotta be about 8-10 yrs ago?)
I read an article in a Guitar magazine where Joe talked about how cool it was and how towards the end they jammed a few of the Satch favourites.....
Another little jem from the memory banks :weird:

Boy ... you have no taste.
I can assure you that my sound is NOT bland.
ESP guitars are crap. As for Mesa - well the Twin Rectifier is okay, but the rest are rubbish.
Try one of these if you want lots of sound. It's what I have with my incredibly bland 1985 Gibson Les Paul Custom and my boring old JCM800 1987-model pop-rock Marshall Amp:

Well the first album I ever bought was Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton, heard a track recently on the radio, still sounds pretty good. :niceone: Still got the album, too. The Edge from U2 does some good stuff too.
