Frosty (no, not HIM)

Beautiful frost here this morning, the last few days have been definitely NOT for riding a motorcycle, cars off SH1 everywhere and road too slippery to stand on in places, lots of dicks barrel past crash scenes and promptly go into entertaining slides!! You would have thought the sight of icy road + upturned car(s) would give them a clue but no :no: :weird: .
Truck and trailer unit with 40 tonnes of peat on board skidded and rolled, now THERE'S an untidy mess!!
Had to get some 4X2 timber (or whatever it is these days) and took the Mistral, my ears just about fell off and I had to 'feather' the throttle even in 4th gear 'cos of ice. Managed to tie the four 2.9 metre lengths to the roll-bar and get home - bloody rope was frozen in place by the time I got back!! and the hoar frost looked kewl!! (ok bad pun!) :motu:

And the 'on-board air temp. guage' ($3.95 at K-Mart) got up as high as 1 degree below freezing so things must be warming up eh?

and the 'inboard air temperature guage' (free for life) says it is quite comfortable thank you

Must admit, I've never encountered ice yet, in the car or on the bike. When I leave in the mornings, the gate has ice on it, and the grass has thick frost, but the roads feel fine in the cage.

Is black ice, just ice you can't really see? Some scary shit, me thinks I should ride with my temp gauge set to air temp, and not coolant temp like I have it now. I reckon you'd need to take care at anything under 5 ish? (Yes I know water freezes at 0, but I like to be sure) (oh, to be sure father, to be sure)

I've been having lots of fun on the GN when I gave it to the shop today.

Just gotta be extra careful, and keep slow and steady over the slippery bits.

Black ice> evil stuff, more slippery than the old white frost and a whole lot more tricky to spot, it's 'clear' so you are looking right through it to the road, hence 'black'.
Just learn to expect it on any section of road that is shaded, (in cuttings, dehind hedges etc )- even on a sunny day if there has been frosts in the area at all.

Last thursday morning was the first morning I have been outside and seen the puddles frozen solid in the 3 years I have lived down here. Had to be careful on the push bike not to ride over them, didn't really want to see what happened. Was still a good frost in the shade at midday, haven't had any decent frosts this week though.

Nah just kidding even I'm not crazy enough to try riding on ice. If the only way I can get there is buy risking my bike on ice then I walk or don't go.

I think they said somewhere nearish dunedin was -8 at 0900 this morning. You are all nuts (or frozen nuts as the case may be) for living there. Great scenery, but only if you survive the frost ice etc. :weird:

I seem to recall a few years back in Wellington quite a few non-asian drivers crashing their cars when there was a really bad frost. People sliding all over the road & slamming on their brakes. :weird:

had that happen in the naki when I lived at atkinson road, bike broke through some of them but most just rode over sweet as!

But dont try ice skating on frozen cattle troughs, they cant even support a five year old!

Bah! That's 'cause it's not cold enough. Mum and dad have got this big huntaway- must weigh around 50kg. He loves water, he'll sit in a water trough even on frosty mornings. But when they have a real frost he can't break through the ice. He just slides straight across- bloody funny to watch.
