View Full Version : Traumatic demise of an old friend

For 10 years or more we'd ridden everywhere together, done all sorts of riding from sports to touring to adventure. We'd toured the north and south islands together. From the day we met we just clicked. Fit just like a glove - you know how it is? We've done at least 100,000kms (probably twice that) together thru all weather rain hail or shine. I'm gonna miss you old friend. :bye:

So any way my favourite summer weight gloves have done their dash and I'm finding it very difficult to find a worthy replacement that
A) Are light enough for adv riding
B) Don't look gay with all the carbon/metal knuckle protection and plastic tacked on bits
C) Have a little thinsulate or similar lining on the back of the hand but no lining on the palm.
D) Prefer Leather.

What are the rest of you Adv riders using as an allround summer road glove?

Mods - I know this is a gear thread but I'm after specific input from adv riders so can ya please leave it here? :)

Taz.

Motomail had some cheap Revit adv style gloves for sale. Looked OK , the desert gloves from memory.

Revit gear I am using is pretty good stuff .

I recently had to wave goodbye to the faithful departed, my well loved Troy Lee Apex supermoto gloves, they had holed out in the fingertips and thumb. They were super comfy, slim fitting and I could still squeeze thermal liners gloves on inside them on cooler days.

I've replaced them with Fox Bombers, more of a MX glove with knuckle protection, but not as warm as the Troy Lees.
Yeah, I know they've got carbon knuckle protection, it's peace of mind to me, the bling doesn't bother me. Nice fitting as well, and more breathable but also more prone to getting wet. Special price though, Ebay special, landed in NZ for $40, avail here for $80.

Those 'Icon Hooligans 2' sound good esp. at that price...
goatskin palm...good stuff...the part, together with index finger tip and thumb (which btw isnt reinforced in these gloves) that wears first with me...
but 'Motorcycle Superstore' dont seem to ship to nz...
where did you get them from?

I've got a pair of the old Hooligan's.
They're even better

I don't use them much as they're more roadie gloves.

...but they have 'knuckle armor' for bushbashing and some sort of 'finger armor' on the outside...
but then again...the finger armor is not really finger armor...

Hey 'TAZ'...I agree with you saying:
"I'm finding it very difficult to find a worthy replacement"

I have been 'sewing' patches on my most liked leather gloves for a year now because I cant find decent replacement ones at a decent price...
...one of the few things you cant easily fix up for long.

I dont mind the leather being thick (as long as they are tight when you buy them) cause leather molds to your hand and then they...well...fit like a glove. (Heat is not an issue with me and hands...all sorts gets sweaty way before hands)

Tip:psst:: Leather OIL from the saddlery...put on with a paint brush...with the gloves on...takes 1 minute max...then a bit of dry dirt on the palm to soak up excess/surface oil...soft again as a....and makes them last a lot longer...cause the more hassle it is to put some greasy shit on the less often you do it

Now...thats what we call a pair of gloves...:yeah:

I dont mind those exposed seams, some people do, ...easy to sew up again if needed (ever tried to turn a (real) glove inside out?).

Thick good quality leather...just the way I like it.

And because they look a bit big on your hands I guess that is why you use them as your road gloves.

Of Murphy course... they dont make them anymore:mad::weep::ar15: bastards

They're a nice wide fit, the leather is nice and soft and the fingers are too short.

I also 1 finger brake quite a bit and the brake lever hits the bubble on the knuckle and you don't slow down much at all

What's your measurement across the palm and middle finger length?

She's a hard road finding the perfect glove mate.

If I manage to track down a pair that I can actually get on the fingers are always too short.

And they all seem to use the same armour right across the range, so the 4 knuckle lumps cover just my middle two.

I have about 6 pair of gloves. None of them fit too well, I just bought them in reteliation for 'er indoors shoe purchase binges.

The ones that work best out of the lot are the cheapie Dryrider mesh ones. I've killed two pair of XXL.

Mate...finally got tool free reach adjustment on my brakes...yeeha :wings:
but can be hard on finger if reach is too far out...
re: hitting 'bubble knuckle' on your glove if reach is further in... way better with reach out than no reach at all eg. fading :nono:.

Now we are looking for luck...here we go: palm without thumb 225mm/8 andahalf to 9 inches/large.
Middlefinger length 85mm:blink::no::yes::no::yes:

What are those ones above the 'ICONs' that you cut the cuffs off (?).
Happy gloves?:wait:
Cutting cuffs off is good (in summer): More airflow up jacket and easier to get on and off (fast).
(Also easy to come off hands when sliding down the track...but...)

OK.
They'll fit nicely but may be uncomfortable for finger length.
They cost me about $150 5-6 years ago and I had to wait for a guy on TradeMe to get some in of the right size/colour which took several months.

I don't like cuffs.

The palm leather is so thin, it's like not wearing gloves.
Unfortunately that also means they get holes more easily...

$150 new...:gob: but 'you get what you pay for'.

What is your palm measurement so I get an idea from your photos how tight/loose they would be on me? I need them reasonable tight to start off with.

The glove fingers can be stretched a little with water and a rod (soak, rod in under tension... oil before totally dry, keep in shade, repeat if necessary).

And I can see now that something needs to be done about the colour of that knuckle armor (maybe sandpaper down to the beige underneath and then some ink into the open pores of the plastic).

For general light-duty summer riding I've used a pair of RavX "Full-X" Mountain Biking gloves for some years now & find them great. No armour & real padding & so on though, so defintely light application only.

The specific ones no longer available by the looks of it, but very similar to this:

I don't throw away old gloves.
There's road/dirt/mx/summer/winter/wet gloves in there...
Most have been bought 2nd hand.

I was tempted to cut open the fingers/thumbs of the Icon's and use them as the most badass MTB gloves in the world :D

Went to Boyds today and bought some Alpinestars SP3 gloves. Tried to also buy some Dri Rider RallyX gloves but they couldn't find the the L/H glove and as I have 2 hands that just wouldn't have worked :(

What size Dririder RallyX you after?

You should ask first :D

Alpinestars SP3 gloves.(

They look like a good compromise dude.

I've seen a pair of gloves with a feature that interested me. Duno what the gloves were but they had webbing between the pinky and him next door, out to about half length.

Interested me because I've broken both pinkies. The left one was probably going to happen anyway but the RH one got bent back by a gate post and I'm pretty sure the web would've saved it.

This be them. None of that gay namby pamby carbon or plastic bullshit all over them just a little padding and extra layers here and there. Light cool and comfy.

Large .

Got a pair of xxl here that are mislabeled.
Closer to large. Good finger length but too tight across the hand.

Hmmm...

They might be just right for almoto...

(Back from the hills) Thanks Nordieboy...those 'Dririder' gloves look good...but I have to have double leather index finger padding because with one finger braking that area on the gloves is otherwise just gonna wear too fast.

I also like those 'Alpinestar's' and AS are famous for quality but again none of their gloves have extra padding where I need it.

The search goes on.

Another piece goes over a hole on my favoured gloves...this time with superglue.

Any more suggestions?
