I am mulling over the idea of getting a 250cc (or thereabouts) 2 stroke. I had more than a few such bikes when younger and always liked them. KH250, RD250, RD400, LC, etc etc etc. I am after an 80's version of something but considering the hammering they must had they all seem rather expensive, and if I have to pay more, I guess I'd go for the later Aprilla RS250. I have never even ridden one of these - are they any good? If I check one out, what should I be looking for in particular? Any tips appreciated.

You'd be looking at new rings every 8,000 - 10,000km on one of them. Don't buy one unless you have a good mechanical knowledge otherwise you'll be crying all the way to the bank come rebuild time.

I know of a 1300km 2008 Aprilia RS125 that will be coming up for sale soon.

I've ridden it a couple of times - more fun than a barrell of monkeys.

I can fix most anything enginewise so not worried about rings, except that I won't buy one that rattles unless it is cheap. I am really just curious as to any known weak spots to watch out for.

Cranks aren't super strong & neither is 2nd gear. Main thing is to inspect the Powervalves as they get worn & drop into the cylinder. Read up in RGV250.co.uk as they use the RGV engine. All good fun if maintained.
