I'm going for a ride tomorrow (30/12/10). Makairo track, and head east towards Akitio. Lots of variation, from gravel to track to farm land. Big bike's should be OK (with good tyres).

Meet, 9.30am Pahiatua at that little cafe place.

No probs. Might want to bring a snack, as I doubt we'll be near civilization for lunch. Reasonable fuel range may be required also (250km???), though I'm sure we can find some somewhere. :scooter:

Glad to hear you made it home. Shame your day was cut short. We were just heading our seperate ways at the end of Pori road when you went past. Must have been a long wait.

Awesome day. I'll sort through some photos later on.

great to meet you Bill
sorry you broke your SXC trying to keep up with the cheap nasty jappa's
maybe it has something to do with the amount of time you spend with your front wheel in the air or with the bike sideways???

Awesome vids Mark.

You do realise I have an unfair advantage on those roads though....I started riding them as a 10 year old on a shitty old farm bike. I remember regularly riding to, and racing through, the Makairo with my older brothers. The good old days....gumboots, shorts, teeshirt, no helmet. :violin:

Plenty of photos to sort through. I'll post some up soon.

Bearings were replaced 1200km ago talking to local bearing suppiler their thoughts are internal cage failure, so much for periodic maintenace should of left the old ones in they had done 13500km with minimal wear . Apears no hub damage, just bearings and spaces will know for sure when new bearing is fitted, parts ordered so the toy will live to slide another day.
Anybody had a similar catastrophic bearing failure?, or different thoughts on "why"
cool pictures guys, gotta get a helmet cam, with you taking photos like that Bart have to give you a headstart to get more sweet shots or stop and play somemore, look forward to riding with you's again, until then ride safe, stay left and hang it out

Yes, ask Marks about my rear failing and chewing a big gouge in my swingarm a few years back. Had to trailer home, which is another story.

My rear bearings pack up pretty quick so I change them every time I do a tyre, and also carry spares in my toolkit. Yes I am paranoid about them. No I don't know why they pack up so fast.

Bart you are going to have to show me around there one day. I need to go and see Ma and Pa in Taradale before long so will keep in touch.

See if you can get the correct spacer(the spacer between the bearings), measurement via a manual/workshop etc.
Excessive bearing side load caused by a worn/shortened/incorrect spacer might be transfering the axle nut loading into the bearing races.
Just a thought.

Checked that and am happy as the spacer is a nice snug fit e.g. does not flop around when the bearings are in.

Sorry off topic again

Yup, overtightening an axle nut just once can compress the spacer and from then on you'll have too much axial loading on the bearings.

Best measure it, press one bearing in firmly then use a digi-caliper to measure from the face of that bearing to the shoulder the other one will sit against. If the spacer's not exactly that dimension, (within about 0.05mm) then it's a problem.
