View Full Version : How old are you? Ageing biker population?

I feel i'm one of the only younger one's out there enjoying proper bikes. It really is very seldom do I bump into 20,21 y/olds at the lights or what have you. Even the L plater's on zxr250 and cbr250rr bikes all seem to be up at 30 or so.
I find the only younger guys all use those bloody ugly ex250 ninja and hyosung bikes...
Are there no younger guys riding proper bikes out there?
Take the poll, let's find out!

The INTERNET poll tells many things. By the looks of this poll, the new generation is starting to lose interest in motorcycling. I hypothesize that many motorcycle manufacturers will be facing recession in 20 to 30 years. If this trend continues, many companies will be out of business within 50 years.
I better add this poll to my marketings research Ph.D thesis.

As for "proper" bikes, who gives a rats arse, so long as you like it and you're having fun riding it, then good on ya. I don't look down on anyone's bike, but I have met a few dicks over the years who I've looked down on, and it's been nothing to do with what they rode but how they rode it. I've met dicks and/or bad riders with some pretty nice bikes and met some real good guys and/or good riders on some pretty shitty bikes. So don't be too quick to judge someone by what they ride, get to know them a bit 1st.

When I was learning to ride 20 odd years ago, I was pretty much the only guy I knew at my school that rode, then a mate did, he quit a few months later after dumping his gsxr250 once too often.
Seems like there is never LOTS of young people riding, but still several end up riding.
I wonder what the percentages over time say. Seems relatively constant. I bet there would be rises and falls but I would guess the percentage of riders vs drivers is pretty much the same.

By proper bike I mean absolute minimum of CBR250RR or ZXR250
Reido- 19 with R6, good on you... would like to meet more of this kind of folk.
So you are a proper biker if you have "absolute minimum of CBR250RR or ZXR250" but not a "bloody ugly ex250 ninja and hyosung bikes..."
I believe young padawan you have a lot to learn. If I was to follow your logic you would be a zero on rice burner. But you are lucky I only think it and usually keep my nasty little clicky opinions to myself.

Can't be arsed reading the whole thread and someone may have already made the point ... but ... if this poll result is broadly representative of the motorcycling demographic over the country then it's not surprising that middle aged (men) make up an overwhelming proportion of biker deaths because middle aged (men) are the largest group within the motorcycling demographic.
I mean, if it turned out that 54% of fatal accidents involved riders over 40 years of age then that doesn't indicate we're more at risk because according to this poll (at present), 54% of bikers are aged over 40.

At +45 It's actually inverse. The percentage of old fuckers accessing ACC is below average. Kinda makes a mess of the whole middle-aged-crises-returning-biker-accident-waiting-to-happen thing, y'know?

24 with a VTR1000. Before that it was a GSX400, and before that it was a GN250. GN250 was a great bike, rode away from a few 'proper' bikes while serving my L time. Anybody who's ever been in Group 1 on a trackday will know that it is the rider that matters, not the bike. Overtaking a big Ducatti on a 400 is awesome, but then getting owned by a 250 on the same section brings your ego back down. Age or size of bike has nothing to do with riding skill.

You know thinking about the reason for this pole and supposed lack of young riders out there, I remember back in the day (40's now and started riding when 15) I was one of the very few YOUNG riders out there.
Sure I had mates that I went dirt bike riding with but road riding seemed to be for the mainly older folk. I never road with groups, always on my own so maybe a lot of riders progress from dirt bikes into road bikes when they get a little older. It just might be the way. No different now than what it was years ago??
I certainly see quite a few more younger riders now on L plates commuting around Vegas on GN250's, Hyosung 250's etc etc.
I am sure the future of motorcycling around Aotearoa will not be dying out anytime soon :niceone:

Ok I don't know if this has been brought up or not, I didn't read the whole thread, but this poll is hardly a balanced sample of the population.
Kiwibiker has been around a few years now, from what I gather, and so those bikers who are older have had alot more chance to google "motorbike forum" and find this place, and then they stay on here. Also take into account that, while perhaps some pretty heavy generalisations, people cool down and become a bit more open minded and wiser in their old age, as in... more likely to look up some information from an outside source.. as opposed to thinking they know everything already and they don't need to learn about safety, especially not from the geeky internet.
Also consider a similar effect, while I'm making a few more assumptions here... once you begin to ride motorbikes, you don't stop, so you kind of only have to try it once when you are anywhere from 20-30 and then you become a part of the older statistic in a few years. Again, this will be a cumulative effect. This is also slightly offset by people who give up biking once they hit these years, but my guess is this is a smaller number than the above scenario.
Also there is a smaller age bracket (7 years, 8 years) for the 'young' options, and the 50+ age bracket is larger (probably about 15 years max).
My point is, the poll is not answering the question it is designed to, which is "is the biker population AGING" which means that the average age is growing older.. the results of the exact same poll 10-15 years ago would probably be very similar.
I'm 22 and just starting.

You are right. The poll is showing the age demographic as it is now. 10-15 years ago the results probably showed similar or slightly younger average.
However, 20-30 years ago I think you could reverse the bar graph as it shows. Cheap Jap import cars and steadily increasing ACC/insurance are to blame.

25-30 and I live nearish the Wellsford end of SH16. With the exception of the tight twisties on West Coast road, the 250 will sit on 110k comfortably through the SH16 route mentioned above.
