Can't let the guitarists and drummers get away with it! So who are your favorite bassists?
Jaco - has to be at the top I suppose...the God of bass
Paul McCartney, his bass lines are so unusual and tricky, very much part of the Beatles sound...I reckon he's the best bass player ever.
Roger Glover - clanky Rickenbacker....Smoke On the Water doesn't come alive until he comes in last with his so,so simple 1,2,3,4 bass line.
Stanley Clarke - shit,wow...like,is that a BASS?
Jack Bruce - combat on the front line with some mere guitar player of no rank.
Bill Wyman - Stone face of the Stones, love his octave runs.
John Entwhistle - Who?
I'll come back with more, just want to get the thread in before someone beats me to it.

John Entwhistle rules man, The Who are a kickass group one of my favourites for sure, all of their members rank in the 'best of' their instrument/singing
Roger Waters frmo pink floyd has some pretty mean stuff too:D
Gene Simmons has some "ok" stuff but most of his shit is pretty simple and sucks, hes just there for show IMHO
a lot of blues/jazz black bass players are real cool. i love that slap bass stuff its cool as
also the guy from the living end dunno his name but he stands on his bass, and its a proper bass not electric :D

The guy from Mi Sex - Don Martin. 'But you just don't care' still pushes my buttons after 25? years.
Sting - but more for the voice and the messages.
Klaus Voorman - Nilsson's 'Jump into the fire'
Duck Dunn - Blues brothers numerous.

Yeah,Klaus on Jump into the Fire, great base track - and he was an artist too, have you seen the scetches on the inside of Ringo's Album,Klaus did one for each track.
Charlie Mingus - ultimate jazz bassist.
It's a pity the bass line can just be layed down on the keyboad....pick your style, sound and away you go - just two guys in a pub with a computer and sound system, they sing and put on lead guitar live, the rest of the band was put in at home.I'm an old fart and like to watch bass players doing their job live....and I don't like modern music - but shit, some of these guys who play a real live bass,4,5,6 strings, slap, pluck, they give it death and it sounds fantastic.

Les Claypool - Primus, Sausage
Charlie Hunter - Charlie Hunter Quartet and Quintet
Doug Wimbish - Tackhead, Madonna, Living Colour, to name a few

Jimmy Blanton - two brief years with Duke Ellington in the early '40s before an untimely death - set the tone for Mingus and BeBop bass players.

ai ai ai 10 strings! what torture is this?!?
How does that work with octaves methinks.
but then Keef Richards (not worthy etc) had a 7 string did he not?
I presume it's predominately plucked?
What?

Oi Motu - Ya forgot Bob Daisley!!!!!

Are you a mind reader too? I was tossing up between bass players and LP Album art for a thread, but the drum thread started and figured I better do the bass one.
I mentioned the Wishbone Ash album Argus on the guitar thread - that was so simple and powerful....the medievel knight watching a UFO....

Nope - finger tapping features quite heavily as do finger extensions - hollow wooden tubes that slip over the fingers. There are 8, 10, and 12 string versions.

The short guy, slightly dwarfish, plays a mean version of Amazing Grace using predominantly harmonics. Got to be the god of bass, that man.

Allan Wade was Billy T's bass player, watching him play bass was like watching Ivan Mauger go around the speedway track. His bass had a heavy body and it was deeply carved to get the weight down.Wadey was an upolstorer and put a new cover on the seat of my C50,in case you were wondering why I mentioed an obscure local player...
My wife's bass is heavy too, painted in Plasicote black,it has a brass bridge and nut with flat wound strings, the sound is thick and dull, half way to an accoustic, not many like it's sound, but I do - it plays like a big old flywheel, just rolls along.I'm left handed so can't play it,but the flatwounds are plush on fingers. We used to have an old 100W Jansen Bassman going through a 12in speaker at home, the three went together well, but the mains hum was like living inside a power station. Now we have some English electronic combo, takes a guitar no worries too.

My favourites have been:
Stanley Clarke (definite legend with mind blowing ability)
Bootsy Collins (some strange outfits, but the brother has some serious groove)
Chapman sticks rock! There was a dude in a NZ band called Canvas (became Chris Butler Trio) that had one and despite it being a relatively unanimated performance, it had to be seen to be appreciated and believed that all that sound came from one guy!

My first published article in NZ was a review of the Living End tour for Rip It Up magazine. I still play a few of their 'anthemic' numbers to get the creative juices flowing.
Victor Wooten - Flecktones
Flea - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin
Bob Daisley - Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne
Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Tim Commerford - Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave
Shavo Odajian - System Of A Down
Stu Hamm - Joe Satriani and various other jazz/rock groups
And I heard there is some up and coming guy called Malaki Strongman and he's in a band called MethVed

Right -
Rule #1: Never make a bass player feel human.
Rule #2: Always steal his girlfriend.
Rule #3: Refer Rule #1
There are enough egos in a band without letting the rhythm section get ideas above their station, especially the guy that can't cope with 6 strings.

Hell there's some muso's here allright. I had trouble thinking of a drummer so now that I'm here my vote goes to Ravi Shankar.

And his daughter should be shot for crimes against music. As should the people who buy her "music". The owner of the next cafe into which I walk that is playing this twattage shall also perish painfully. A jazz singer? I think not.
