DRZ400E road sprockets and gear

I'm just about to pick up a DRZ400E, will be doing 90/10 road/offroad- am I right in thinking that a 14/44 set up will allow for some (relatively)easy cruising at 110kph?
Also, MotoX parts seem to have some sharp pricing on wavy front discs- any thoughts on the quality of gear from MotoX?

Step up to atleast a 15 on the front with that 44 on the rear. 16 is max up front with some dremel work to the case protector to get the chain to fit. I found the 15/44 was the best compromise for both. It allowed you to mostly keep up with the big bikes on road and would pull to 150-160 but would allow you to fang it off road although had you a little more committed than was comfortable in some of the real technical shit. Good bikes, good choice.

i buy from them, they've been great to deal with and ive had no probs with quality in fact IMHO a lot of there stuff is better quality than OEM

motoxnut has the gearing sussed on his 400, keeps my 600 on its toes on the open road

OK, I found 14/41 the best for adventure stuff. Ran standard gearing of 14/48 offroad.

I tried 15/41, but she was struggling to pull it. I reakon 15/44 might be equivalentishh to 14/41, so try that out (you could probably use the same chain).

As for the discs, they pull up alright standard, so don't waste your money. The wavey things may look cool, but I'd be surprised if you'd overheat the standard jobby....unless you weigh 150kg.

As an afterthought, is the DRZ the right bike for 90% road? Bloody good bike, but they're more of a 50/50 thing. If I did 900km out of every thousand on the road, I'd go for a DR650 (or similar). :scooter:

I also have a DRZ400e and from Barts advice I also went for a 14/41 on the road and it rides really well at 100k as well as in town..Mine originally came with the 14/48

...Trail rides I have done I found the 14/41 a bit too tall for steep hill climbs and tight single tracks, as I was having to clutch it too much..So I just chuck the 14/48 back on just for the tighter trail rides...14/41 works great for everything else..

Thanks for the advice- I am getting the 400 so that I can go out and nail the trails every once in a while, it is a massive step up from my yammie scorpio and I loved the test ride! The bike has an opened up stock exhaust and is stupidly loud. I pissed off the locals when I (accidentally) pulled a screaming wheelie out of first in the town centre. I can't wait to put a good exhaust and tires on her. Stainless steel brake lines at a minimum (with good pads) as the stock front brake is pretty lame, especially when I tried to reign it in after hitting a screaming 130k coming into town.

Not sure who told me of this site..but check it out for gearing combos, just put in your bike and then change the gearing to see the difference it makes to your revs/speed..

It shows the 14/41 as .2 km/h higher than the 15/44..unsure how accurate it is? it only shows the 07 drz400e..unsure of your year but mine is a 06 and it seems pretty close...

My stock bored out exhaust is also very loud! I have a leo vince aftermarket which sounds alot better and quieter..but don't think it has been jetted to suit aftermarket as it loses a bit of oomph in the higher revs...Fun bike though for what it was made for..Don't wreck yourself before you get a chance to enjoy it...
