With apologies to Mom, Maha et.al. and making the point that this is about geography and not people.......

Warkworth is a festering abcess across SH1

Having had to pass through there 4 times in the last week, twice today alone, in the car (bike not an option due to Grandkids), I hate the place with a visceral passion.

Stop putting tarseal on the underused roads in the South Island - only 16 people live there and they are all related - and finish the bloody 4-lane motorway this year!

So there

(reference to SH16 will see the poster's armpits cursed with the fleas of a thousand camels)

The only saving grace currently is that JK also plough through the same mess and is now making this a "road of national significance"

and you will just move the bottle neck about 12 miles north to Wellsford where SH16 joins the SH1

plans for a 4 lane highway to warkworth were on the drawing boards back in the 1970's maybe if the government spent less on social engineering there might be more money for roading

alternatively introduce and encourage other forms of transport apart from private cars

This used to be one of my favourite expressions, Invercargill being the home town and all, until someone said to me...
Auckland has about 35% of the population, pays about 38% of the total tax bill and receives about 32% of the infrastructure spend. So even with the fuel surtax, Auckland is still subsidizing the rest of the country.

The bastard thing is that I've never been able to prove him wrong. Bugger!

He isn't wrong, but that is only because so many companies have their head office in Auckland.

eg. A petrol company has its head office in Auckland, but runs a petrol station in Invercargill. All profit that the petrol station in invercargill earns is counted as being earned by head office in Auckland. Head office pays the tax, and so the tax is counted as being paid by Auckland, even though the money comes from Invercargill.

With infrastructure, a similar effect occurs. A power station is built in Taranaki, and power lines are built from Taranaki to Huntly, then new lines are built from Whakamaru to Otahuhu. Total cost is around $3B of which only $100M is spent in Auckland, but it is all for Auckland's benefit.

If you want a fair comparison then rather than take the total tax paid, take the net Paye tax less benefits and see where the real wealth is being earned.

You make some really good points but I think that implying power supply is typical of infrastructure spending patterns is pretty skewed thinking.

Auckland's power comes from the Huntly thermal station, which also sends power south.

Auckland's power comes from the Huntly thermal station, which also sends power south.
Auckland's peak demad yesterday was 630MW. The old Huntly station was shut down and generated 0MW, the newer E3P station at Huntly was generating 330MW (it can go higher to 380 MW) and all the rest of Auckland's and Northland's demand was supplied by stations further south.

I use electricity as an example because that is something I do know about. I do not know about roading, water supplies etc, so can't comment on those ones. However it does show that the simplified claims about where tax is paid, where infrastructure spending occurs etc, whist correct, are also misleading.

Mostly fair enough - I contend that using electricity as your example is misleading in terms of where the infrastructure spend happens but that there may well be merit in the rest of what you say.

i went up to ruakaka on the 27th and the traffic was stopped and crawling several kms from outside warkworth and then same again outside wellsford.
i think a motorway extension wont change the fact that town centres strategically placed along SH routes will always cause this delay. There were hundreds of people stopped at wellsford, parking upto a km from any services, to take a leak, get food, stretch legs etc.
And my god, the moronic parallel parking attempts, parking with boats, caravans etc I saw.
It made me shake my head, at myself! for being so dumb to ride my bike up there at that time of year. i was simply another automaton headed for a "stress free" holiday.
duped by the govt who insists we should vote for them next time, because they have improved our lives so much with the new highways to which GST and petrol tax had to go up to pay for. And toll roads, don't forget the Puhoi tunnel is just the beginning.

i'm fairly 'greenish' minded,but,
screw half a dozen trees.
what about the litres of fuel wasted at hill st,
also the tonnes of carbon from all the parked up vehicles.

Agreed, SH1 through that region is utter rubbish. Heading North, got stuck 2 kms or so before the tunnel and went at walking pace all the way into warkworth before it cleared up a little. So much for all that money spent on the new road layout...talk about a flop.
