This is my new MC22 bike I've owned for about a week, has had no recent work done that I know of.

Just yesterday the right hand side indicators stopped working. The ticking sound has doubled in speed from usual. Left hand side works perfectly. I've read that this usually this means a blown bulb so I swapped the left hand side bulbs over to the right and vice versa, but still the same problem. There's no problem with the bulbs whatsoever as all bulbs worked on the left hand side.

I used a multimeter to check voltage on each side. The voltage on the left spikes to about 6 volts on my slow multimeter. The right hand side gets to about half a volt. I also checked the earth on the right side by holding one contact on the life wire and grounding the second contact to the motor, but still had the same voltage reading fluctuating to about .5 volts as before.

I was wondering if the indicator relay could be the problem. Does it control left and right side independently of each other?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

good troubleshooting so far!

The double speed clicking of the flasher and the lack of voltage point to a short to ground on the indicator wiring on the right hand side. It could be an internal fault in the flasher but a wiring short is more likely...

Traditional bimetallic flasher units flash slower when a bulb is blown (less current drawn). To flash faster more current must be being drawn, which fits the shorted wire scenario.

Do you notice your headlight or dash or other lights dimming slightly when the indicator relay ticks?

Check the indicator wiring all along it's length, especially where it passes through or near the frame, tank, the steering head and anywhere else it may get rubbed, scraped, insulation melted, or otherwise damaged. Also check all of the the bulb sockets on the right hand side for corrosion of bits of crud.

Are the contacts clean in the indicator? The male/female connectors to the indicator are crap, fiddle with and clean them.

All good guys, after a titanic amount of messing around with the indicator switch, indicator couplers, indicator relay etc I took off the front fairing and found the bundle of connectors that linking the instruments and controls to the rest of the bike. Pulled out the one containing the indicators and sprayed the contacts with crc. Indicators now work fine. I pretty much tried everything before doing that but I guess it's all good knowing a bit more about how the bike is wired.
