View Full Version : A parent's proudest moments

All parents have different milestones and goals for their kids.
Mine were obviously each of the four of their births. Each time, I think I'm ready for it, then cry like a six year old girl with a skinned knee when they appear.
Then you've got your "first words" (dad if they know what's good for them), first steps, first teeth, all that sort of stuff.
But today, my boy (2 years) has grease under his fingernails, from helping me on the bike. I'm not talking wiping with a rag or sticking a screwdriver up the exhaust of his PeeWee, because he's been doing that for awhile. But actually holding stuff in place, or putting bolts in holes while I hold the nut type stuff. I've a few friends who look at me sideways for having four kids and ask "How do you cope?" Sometimes, I wonder.
But today, I wouldn't change places for any ammount.
So. What's your favourite moments as a parent?

Where do you start? I guess for me some of the proudest moments are when son (12) comes out with an observation about life. One that he has obviously given a great deal of thought and then nailed it.

I don't have kids - I have step-kids. The part that the most fun was putting the oldest boy on the old mud bug and showing him what was what and off he went! It was his first ride on a 2 wheeler with gears and he wasn't that young (13) but it was a great day.

I am just plain proud of my girls, they try everything, have manners, work hard at school. Exert cheekiness when required, handle my yelling at them with humour, to make mum laugh, and they are only 13 & 9... ye my kids rock too... plus they can get grease under there nails any day .. as long as they have a shower at the end of the day.

All sorts of moments really for both of my girls but one that sticks in my mind was my younger daughter filling in for my 4th grade cricket team on 3 or 4 occasions when aged about 18. She is a girly-girl but has good hand-eye coordination and is quite sporty as well as being competitive. In one particular game she got to bat with a few overs left, scored a few runs and nearly hit a 4. One of the opposition fielders then had a wee sledge at her and she sledged back with some remark that left him speechless and his teammates rolling on the ground laughing. Our turn to field and with her fielding at short cover, the batsman smacked one hard at her which she duly caught very tidily. My team members mobbed her and it just made me feel so proud that my little girl could handle herself in the company of men and earn their respect in that sort of environment.

Proud of Sully One a lot but lately it's of the charts and today the little Crusty Demon started getting air on his bike, changing gears, sliding the back on purpose under throttle while cornering and most surprisingly/shockingly started doing bloody heel clickers and no foot landings and other shenanigans...oh and then a very staged HOLLYWOOD!
I just about died...I need some heart medication! But shit it's cool to see him so into it :)

I have five, four sons and a daughter, all grown up and away from home.
They're all great kids. I think the proudest moment for me was when three sons and I were riding round the SI. We dismounted in Takaka, removed our helmets, and a passer-by exclaimed, "Shit, Dad and his three sons!"

we got 4, my oldest (13) figured out the clutch and gears for himself yesterday (so proud) before I knew it he had his foot out and all.
First time on a full manual bike, for the first few tries I showed him the basics and gave him a shove, but then once he stalled it on the other side of the track and I took a while to get to him but to my astonishment there was a cloud of dust and he was off, I was soo proud, he got it started and moving all by him self (like he should)
last thursday my youngest (5) got brave enough to give the pw50 a go, she was the earliest at everything, walking, talking, riding a bike with no training wheels, reading, winding up her brothers......... a result of being dragged along by the boys. now she can ride too, did 10min around the car park before the inevitable full throttle freakout combined with target fixation crash that we all havehttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g148/allnamesgone/2010_1230041.jpg
first ride, so freaky

Like so many have said, there are so many things....
My boy Max is 6, has a great sense of humour and is more of a musical dude than a footie head. Watching him gettinig into music just blows me away every time.
But for me, what really did it was his school report. The comments at the end basically said that he was a nice kid. That to me is everything, knowing that your child is regarded as one of the good guys. Life is so much easier if you can simply be nice to people.
Oh, the time he called the Arsenal team manager a tosser was a proud moment for me as well.....

With 6 kids aged 19-35 it would take me all day to tell you of our proudest moments.
Suffice to say they are all hard working productive adults and great fun to be around!
