Thought I would start a thread about this since it is rapidly drawing upon us and there really should be some banter.

Q1. Are you going to it?

Q2. I've order a fire extinguisher from epicevents through the entry form. Does anyone know if they come with any sort of mounting kit or how do you mount them to your bike or just carry them in your backpack? Was there some thread about an extinguisher hitting someone when they fell off because they were carrying it a particular way?

Yes, booked and paid

They come with a plastic bracket which is pretty useless. Just use duct tape and or cable ties to attach to the front fender or number board. I dont recommend putting them in a pack unless they are very well padded (which makes for a pretty bulky pack) because as you said, extinguishers in packs have broken bones before. I have mounted one on the crossbar of the handlebars before and hit it too which wasn't fun either.

I've got my ticket, now just have to make sure the bike is all set up. I have to replace my sprockets anyway, any advice on the if I should keep factory settings of 12/48 or go to 13/48 to get higher top speed? Bike's RMZ250 2007.

Also JT vs Renthal?

Is your top speed really really slow at 12/48? I'm on a 09 and have gone 14/45 to speed her up a bit as I found the 12/45 I got it on to be too slow.

Ill be there, all paid.
gear up your RMZ, its geared for MX were top speed isn't the main factor.
its got the power to pull through longer gears, and then you won't be reving you bike as much when you crusing at high speeds.

all booked and paid. Camping too - better not be cold!! Come over (dark grey Mondeo with black trailer) and say hi but bring your own drinks

We did one other epic event. We just taped the hell out of them...one was to the front number board and it shook like anything but stayed on (RMZ250) and I taped mine to the cross bar on handle bar (kx125) and it was good until I came off....lets say I am glad I wasn't a boy :shit: but it stayed on and likely to put it there again.

My issue is that I want to do the main loop but it is 63km I think and I can't get around on one tank and they have no fuel stops. Any ideas other than small coke bottles with premixed fuel in my backpack? Idea is to top it up part way through then crush them down to save space/weight.

Idea's are welcome :D

We paid up last night, gonna be my third DS, yayness :) First ride since Glen Murray, been ages!
I might bring spare fuel for the 125 just in case. I did it last year on my rm100 but I had an oversize tank so didn't need to bring spare. I miss my big clear tank, was soo handy :(

I am looking forward to it and have taken Monday off work so that I can sort out the unpacking of all the crap I will take but not use :innocent:

It's not nearly as cold as camping at tussock. Only prob with camping at DS is the rain, last year our tent leaked all night. But with good weather this year it should be sweet :) It's fun with the enduro/highjump contests on sat evening.

I got caught out by the cold at DS a few years back too... plus forgetting the bung for my airbed didn't help with my comfort either:doh:

Also was not best pleased at someone turning up at 2am and spending 3/4 of an hour pissing around looking for a place to pitch the tent, yelling out of the window of their rattly old diesel 4x4, which they kept running through all of it, and generally being about as loud as they could be, even when they were asked to keep it down.

The first time we did it. Issues with leaving Auckland late due to unseen and unplanned reasons....pitching tent in the dark with only help of headlights and then waiting for the rest of the gear to arrive at 11.30pm at night. :violin:

Two in our group got broken bones. One (brother) was straight through snap of ribs and the other was my niece (and his daughter) broke her arm and at only 3 years old was not cool. Me and sis in law had to go down to Palmy hospital to take and collect :doctor:

So..... hoping camping is ok this year and that I haven't jinxed anything

Other multi day rides I have wimped out and done the cabin at local camping grounds.

Got me a leave pass for Sunday as that was the better track (not so much road).
I'm also going down to Fielding after DS for the daughters horse event and taking the bike. If any one can help with a couple of places to ride in the Manawatu area during the week that would be cool. Legally of course.

Hey Kessa. Must catch up for a loop.

good ride, loved the volcanic plateau type terrain but could have done without the dust, and the fatality :(

Wearing rooted old black and white gear and black helmet. Didn't even take my camera which was an awesome change!

Dust though... jeepers. There were a couple moments where i came to a complete stop because i simply couldn't see the track in front of me.

Big ups to the twat that passed me on the final road section back to the pits on the wrong side of the barrels... choice cuz. I'd just taken my goggles off to cool down so it was nice to balance out the dust in my lungs with some in my eyes.

Had a blast but missed the tacky mud of usual. We should ask nick reader to run it in winter next year.

Yeah I didn't see anyone from here. We need a better system for meeting up lol

Had such a blast.

Ended up riding down that river which was close to the Erzberg section. Hit it up with skinner, kp, cp & caleb. Was so much fun! Pipe is a little dented though..

Also scaled up some gnarly mountain/hill which was getting 'pretty' close to Ruapehu. Was awesome, spectacular views. Kinda off trail, will definitely do more of that next year. Might take some extra gas though haha.

Great weekend. Didn't enjoy the dust on Saturday though!

Had an off on a random corner on Sat, still not sure what I did etc, but smacked my knee a bit which swelled up nicely. Got a few cool-packs from the friendly medical staff which helped.

Paid my $20 to the suspension setup guy who turned out to be a real nice guy. Turned out the pre-load on my YZ125 was all stuffed up. Needless to say he fixed it up and it completely transformed the bike. I could turn corners now :P

Sunday was excellent, probably due to the new bike setup :) Best $20 I've spent on the sport.

Glen Oroua, Pohangina Valley, Ohariu Valley (w00t local ride finally) and Mt Biggs are the next Trail rides we're doing.
I'm dead keen to hit up Long Gully though, cause since my back tyres all but wrecked now anyways, may as well kill her good and proper!

Moto Suspention Research MotoSR - they are at all the events and even at Tussock. I got mine done on a previous ride and had no idea how bad everything was on my bike - was totally wrong for me.

I broke my masterlink on my chain 10km into the 63km loop and was the first recovery of the day, which is not an award I was after. New chain on and off I went.
Dust was full on and had to almost stop a few times so that I could see where the track went.

Sunday was better with more of the riders being nicer in passing me and just in general. Didn't get as many that were out "for the win" as per the DRD editors note.

Anyway will be keen to do again and planning the next weekender for us which will be Tussock.

We do need a better way to meet up - maybe a tent....?

that hill riding made the weekend for me, and playing in the Erzberg section. The rest of the riding was absolutely ruined by the dust. Took some damage though...need a rear brake guard for the big rocks and got some nasty scratches on my rims, swingarm and other alloy bits. How much fuel did you have when you got back Vin? I hit reserve at 40kms on the way back...to many diversions lol.
