How many languages do you guys speak fluently and maybe not so fluently but are able to hold a conversation in that language? Also what languages are they?

My Bro is thinking about learning a new language and I thought it was a great idea so I want to learn a new language as well. I am thinking of either French, German or Italian for now. People from thoes countries say that my accent is good and I should be able to pick them up OK, so it seems pretty exciting at the moment.

I am at the moment fluent in English, Nepali and Hindi and I can hit on girls, swear, ask for basic nessecities in German.

Je parle un peu de francais (but can't spell it very well) et pocito Espagnol. But I kinda need to be in the vision of the person communicating as I gesture eloquently in all languages.

Being of Anglo-Saxon descent I know that if I speak s l o w l y and LOUDLY enough I can make myself understood in any language.

Seriously though I would like to learn a couple of languages - Italian cos I intend to visit there, Maori cos I know they're talking about me on telly (and it would be cool to speak the indigenous language), Japanese cos I think it could be really useful.

My mum's from croatia, so she speaks croatian and english. Dad's parents are from holland, even though dad was born here, he can speak some dutch.

My sister learned german pretty well in school.

I was supposed to learn japanese, but the classes in school kinda turned into a bit of a joke and most people didn't take it seriously.

I've kinda tried to learn a bit of croatian, but haven't stuck with it long enough.

So I just speak english.

If you're wanting to learn a foreign language, check to see if your local library has the any Pimsleur (http://www.pimsleur.com/) tapes/cds for it. Or you might have luck searching for pimsleur mp3's on DC++ or other peer to peer networks. They seem like a good way to learn how to speak a new language.

I speak English. In South Africa I was forced to learn Afrikaans and Xhosa as well, but I have neatly forgotten them. Also learnt a couple of different sign languages as well.

Came to NZ, learnt Japanese and Chinese, and have obviously picked up a few Maori words. Done some programming courses, so know a bit of Java, .Net etc.

Always seem to pick up a bit of a language, know it for a while, then forget. I have found that if you don't use a language, you tend to forget it, so now I am back to English and a bit of programming. Not too fussed...

Xhosa? That's a new one for me. (Dumb question alert) I take it that it's an African language?

yep, when I left at the end of 96, 11 languages on the box. Couldn't even schedule one day of english TV. Now that's PC.

The other one that people had to learn - usually instead of Xhosa - was Zulu, I think.

I speak fluent british.. None of this international muck.

Also, tend to learn languages when I need them and forget them after. The old intensive Berlitz course is really good for that (not sure if NZ has that technology yet).

French, German, Russian and Hebrew are all languages i've had to learn over the years and I can quite happily say, forgotten. :)

I have a slight problem with hebrew because my english accent stops me pronouncing some of the sounds. Also Arabic is a problem too. Havnt mastered the art of spitting on my foot for some syllables.
