He has just died at the age of 92.

For those of you who don't know who he is, watch Band of Brothers.
A truly remarkable soldier.

He welcomed me to his house in Hershey, introduced me to his loving wife, Ethel, and constantly exhorted me to "Hang Tough!" He has died quietly, in private, without fanfare, with the same modesty that he lived his life as one of the most celebrated soldiers of his generation. I will miss him and I thank him. Currahee!

Such a profound effect he and Easy Company's story had on me. For me, it strengthened my respect for all veterans who sacrificed so much.

The attack he led that destroyed the German 105 mm howitzers was something out of this world. One platoon of fifty German troops, and Winters had only thirteen men!! Refered to as the Brécourt Manor Assault. "The attack is still taught at the military academy at West Point as an example of a textbook assault on a fixed position"

When the series was first aired on NZ television, I contacted the US embassy to get Major Winters' address. I wrote to him.... and several weeks later, got a reply. I feel VERY honoured.
I have an autograph in the front cover of my copy of "Band of Brothers". I says "Hang Tough... Dick Winters". Signed by the man himself.
The world has lost a shining example of what a good man should be.
