Have just bought a '98 VTR and am loving it. Except for the mirrors. Can't see shit really. Does anyone know where to get some decent after market mirrors ? Or even how to space the existing ones out a bit so I can see more than just my elbows ?

Standard sports bike mirrors... sux

Youcan buy small concave blind spot mirrors and use dubble sided tape, to each mirror thats what I did... buy fro super cheap auto or repco or some place like that...
the next option is you can get or even make extenders that mount between the mirror and the fairing.

or some bar end mirrors but then you have to fillin the holes left behind etc

Try asking on the Firestorm forums. The guys on the SV1000 forum figured out that GS500 mirrors are identical except for the stalk length, so maybe the Firestorm guys have figured out something similar :)

Google these - GenMar mirror extenders, you may find a better deal than the one above. I just can't be arsed looking too hard :D

That website doesn't ship worldwide though. Bar end mirrors would look pretty silly so I'll give those a miss. Might try a blind spot mirror as you suggested or try to improvise something to extend them.

I know, but there's plenty of websites with these that do ship worldwide, You just need to do a Google search, like I said you'll probably find them cheaper too.
Personally I'm not a big fan of blind spot mirrors as they're very small and the view is a bit distorted.
These extenders work well and also take most of the vibes out of the mirrors.

While my FahrtSturm's mirrors weren't the best in the world, I didn't think they were too terrible.
Perhaps the VFR's mirrors (which are excellent) might fit? Then again, the VTR's fairing is narrower, so that might be the problem, in which case fabricating some extender blocks to go under htem, and buying some longer mounting bolts would be the go. Some solid black plastic would be easy to <s>mangle</s> machine, and the Bolt Shoppe should have some suitable longer bolts.
Anyway, you only need imaginary longer mirrors. We know this, because there are no pix of your bike, so it doesn't exist.

Another excellent option :niceone:

Or get used to pulling your elbows in slightly to see what's behind. As long as you don't try this on corners you should be fine.

Don't forgot one BIG advantage of the VTR is it's narrow shape. If you extend the mirrors you might find you misjudge the gaps and end up nailing a few cager mirrors as you filter. Legally of course. :msn-wink:

Been there, done that.
Did it more oin my '90 VFR750 though - so much so, that one day the right-hand mirror just fell off. Lucky it was the urglee model with the rubber condom over the stalk, so that stopped it falling on the road. (Not that it made much difference - it was still furkt...)

What is it about bike mirrors and car mirrors seeming to always be at the same height?

Just stick with the standard ones and move ya elbows when ya want to have a look, you will get use to it, anything else just looks ugly, and if you own a sport bike you should not be putting those little blind spot mirrors on, if you need them then you should be on a harley or some other old mans bike,

Something to think about. Will try to persevere for a while and see if I get used to it. I think the bike would look a bit silly being as narrow as it is with extra long mirrors on it.

I put mirror extenders on my VTR1000. Bought them ages (3 or 4yrs) ago now on ebay I think. I find they are good. Can recommend that as an option.

When I got my VTR, I thought the mirrors sucked.
I eventually found that the stalks pivot forward, and could suddenly see behind me.
Look after them though, I broke one and was quoted $275 for a new one.
