What would be better to upgrade to from a DRZ250, a 2 stoke 125 or a 4 stroke 250?
Im 6' 90kgs so im not sure if im too big for a 125 or not.

after the drz a 125 would be lot of work to ride imo the 250 would be better but if possible have a try on both then choose

try to have a ride on as many bikes as you can, its your opinion that counts not ours, but we could half pie steer you as the 2t 4t debate rages again, lol.

Ive ridden my mates RMZ250 which i loved, was really light and easy to use power, and my mates RM250 which was a bit too touchy for me. I didnt feel comfortable on it, but ive only been riding for 3 months. I like 2t though and something like a RM125 is cheaper than a RMZ250 or YZF250 but not sure if a 125 will have enough to get me up hill climbs etc

a 125 will go anywhere, it all depends on the rider

true that, similar power to the 250 2t but no mid range

I have a KX125 and partner has a RMZ250. I can go where ever he can (when I put my mind to it) so it really is the rider.
He has ridden both 125 2t and 250 4t. He loves his 4t as it "tractors" along for him when he needs to ride with me...but has the guts when he needs it. My preference is for the 2t only cos it is lighter for me (whimpy girl), I like the power delivery and we can fix most of it ourselves at home.
As others have said try different bikes to get an idea as sometimes people gear a bike differently and it can make it feel different. Example is that I have a flywheel in mine to give me a bit more lower end on it but others hate that feeling cos of their riding style.
Not sure that has helped much but find a bike that feels right for you and not what everyone else says. :niceone:

What sort of riding do you do? MX, trail or a bit of both.

Mostly trails and bit of stuff down the river and the odd track, but nothing competitive. Really just want something light and fast to have a bit of fun on and do jumps on.

As the others have said the 125 2t are a geat bike, But since your trail riding and general mucking around have a look at enduro type bike like the WR250F can wollow around in mud, got that tractor pull when you need it, and goes reasonably fast, Oh its got electric start, with kick start back up, which ive never used.
also Honda CRF250X, Kawasaki KLX300 I don't know much about the KTM range, I think there EXC range, someone correct me if Im wrong.
Good luck in your search

The WR250F is an awesome bike, very forgiving, handles great and has enough power to be able to get some pace going but still allow you to ride flat out without it biting (unlike like the RM250 you rode, which I've owned... fast, but aggressive and tends to bite hard when you're tired). Only problem is at 90kg, you'll be bottoming out any time you get decent air, I'm 95kg (+5kg for Xmas) and I easily bottomed out the one I hired for Trail Blazer.
I won't go into the 2T vs 4T running costs debate, but from experience trail riding, hooning and the occasional blat on a track doesn't put anywhere near the stresses on either bike that a pro or semi pro MX rider will, so as long as the oil changes are done regularly and you used good quality stuff, neither should sting you for expensive parts and rebuilds (too often at least).
My pick would be a 125 2T. As mentioned, it will take more riding skills than a 250 4T, but what you will learn by spending time on a 125 will pay dividends later when you start upgrading to bigger and faster bikes. I am a very lazy rider as a direct result of owning too many bikes that can be stuck in 3rd gear and just need a little clutch now and then to keep moving. Have often thought about buying a 125 just to force me to learn to ride properly.

Nice! Fun factor is off the scale with the RM125 and once you get used to riding it, you'll be plenty fast enough...

What about a DRZ400? Good bikes...
What about a 250 2T...enduro spec it with a flywheel weight etc, it will lose a bit of that hard hit and mellow it out and make it a much more liveable bike than a 125.

DRZ400 = too heavy.
250 2T like i said was too touchy and too much power, but with the mod you suggested it might be ok?.
Why do you recommend that over a 125?

you wont be unhappy with a 125 2t - i love my cr125 to bits, and i can ride it as quick as my mates on their 250's, because they cant ring the shit out of their bikes like i can (as if they do they will end up on their asses). yes, the 125 has less power, but that means you can ride it to the max, have heaps of fun and not get into too much trouble - its way more addictive than buying a bike with too much power that you have to be careful to avoid all the time. only recommenation is buy a later model 2t, my cr125 is great, but i rode an 08 kawasaki kx125 - it was way quick, and unbelievably more power so i'd recommend something like that, and at around 4k, they are bloody good value

Recently got a 2008 YZ125. Very happy with it. Was riding a 2006 kdx200, which was awesome.
The YZ is meant to have more bottom end (for a 125 2t) than the other 125 2t bikes. I can't verify that though.
Having said that, the transition from the kdx200 to the yz125 has been enjoyable.
Occasionally miss the comfy kx200 seat though :P
