Safety hint for the day

When riding the Coro loop, should you be caught up behind... oh let's say a '94 Nissan Sentra loaded with a family returning from a weeks holiday, and they're doing 5km/h under the marked speed limit (which would be 100km/h), please resist the temptation to overtake crossing double yellow lines on a blind right hander, because if you fuck it up (as two folk did almost did within ten minutes today) then you're going to make a hell of a mess, cause people to be inconvenienced, and the driver will be pretty fucked off that while on holiday he has to slip into work mode to scrape your sorry fucking arse off the road, or out of the grill of an oncoming 4wd.

I swear, this hypothetical motorist has seen (hypothetically) so many fucking muppets who clearly want to die and hate their friends and families so much they want to make them cry in the last week around the greater Coromandel area.

So, when it's clear and sweet, ride like a nut - go for it, but for fucks sakes, some of us (hypothetically) really don't fancy seeing road pizza on holiday.

We picked the middle of the week to ride it (figured the least number of bikes would be out doing the GP then) and it was lovely. Yes, we got stuck behind a coach from Coromandel through to Thames, and yes it was annoying. BUT we decided from the outset it wasn't going to be a fast ride (it's beyond both our skill sets to attempt that anyway) so we just bided our time and took pleasure in the fact that on bikes we were at least more likely to get ahead than the bank of cars stuck behind it!

Unfortunately it only takes one dickhead to stuff it up. I'd love to ride the loop again but would still probably do it on a Wednesday morning (or some such innocuous day) to avoid the testosterone fueled douches who can't control their throttles or egos.

I drove the familiy to Matarangi on Saturday and drove back Sunday, Thames - Coromandel - Matarangi there and Matarangi - Whitianga - Tairua - Thames home.

I saw a shit load of bikers doning there thing. The vast majority, in my opinion, were good solid riders who knew what they were doing and were having a great time doing it.

However, there were that many gormless twats, especially between Thames and Coromandel, who made me flinch everytime they hit a bend. One guy had no idea, hit the bend far too fast and just about ended up down the hill and into the drink. Now, I am no expert and that goes for most other road users who have never been on a bike. All they can see is danger and accidents waiting to happen, and there is the attitude towards us lovely bikers.

Come on guys n gals, love your bikes but love yourselves more eh, ride within your limits and dont kill yourselves.

Or, do what I did and stick an extra 40kg's on yer gut which means you wil only ever get 65kph out of your bike on uphill and winding road sections.

Now I would never slag off a member of the bikey community but just seeing the chances some of these guys were taking...

Yes, they were on big, fast, powerful bikes and no doubt were out for the thrill of the ride, but crossing lanes, overtaking on blind corners into the sun and hitting some of these mental speeds.....blimey...

There were others doing the same thing but they appeared to have, I dunno, more 'control' over what they were doing.

Hey, I am no expert on racing technique and all that, the skilled bikers have put a lot of effort and practice into mastering their ride and good on 'em....its just the ones that are not 'quite there' that made me cringe.

Thats the way I see it and as I said before, your average car driver will see it the same way.

Dont want anyone getting hurt, the only reasons to come off a bike are to:

Eat
Drink
Root
Sleep

Unfortunately there are a few out there who seem to think it's their mission in life to make all car/truck drivers think that anyone on a motorbike is stupid, incapable of rational thought and generally downright dangerous.
I have ridden the loop a couple of times and on both occassions it wasn't cars that gave me grief it was other bikers , on MY side(clearly 2 metres into my lane) who had FUCKED up the last corner and had to cross the double yellows to avoid going off altogether.
Worse both of them were riding those bloody Hardly Richardsons, had pudding bowls , leather tassles on short sleeved vests and jeans.
Well I never. ( and they didn't bloody well wave)
I've been riding for over 30 years, had one off on the road, own silly fault, no damage, and I was PISSED OFF, with my fellow riders who show such complete disregard for other road users that we all get the same treatment from most normal car drivers.
Love the Coro road, have driven it many times in the course of my work, but ask me to go there on a Sunday with a bunch of riders, um well unless it's my usual crew BFTP or my MAG-NZ mates and the answer is simple. No Fucking way too damned dangerous.
The danger, other gormless twats on big, fast bikes who have absolutely no clues, don't give a damn about anyone/thing excpet themsleves and don't actually know how to keep a motorcycle on their own side of the road.
Now I'm a biker and I'm saying this.
How on earth do we expect normal motorists to react when this sort of shit happens to them on every piece of road they've ever been on.

I'm heading to Coro this saturday along with about 12 others from down here. I will take it easy as I don't know the road and thanks for the safety hint. I havn't ridden this road before and must say I am looking forward to riding the famous Coro loop (well most of it).

PS can you arrange some good weather for us please. Thanks.
