I have a Honda 1989 cbr1000. When I press the starter at its longest end it does nothing wont even connect. However, when I press starter at its shortest end it starts all the time. I am assuming that the contacts inside the switch block may need building up or cleaning. Could anyone please help and advise me on this slight problem?

It'd pay to strip the switch and check it out.
Its amazing the amount of crap they can build up in there in a short amount of time.
With any luck the contacts may only need a sand to clean em up.

Have you tried spraying a bit of WD40 or CRC at it ?

Easy way: spray crc or other brand CONTACT CLEANER (not normal lubricating spray) or alcohol such as meths, acetone or similar into it and move the switch a few times. If it works - hurrah! (watch out for possible effects on plastic parts with any alcohol or contact cleaner)

Harder but more likely to fix it permanently way: take the switch apart and fix it. It's just 2 bits of metal that touch or don't touch, held apart by a spring. It's either just dirty (clean it) or it's broken, taking it apart will give you the answer. If you DO take it apart, all it needs as far as cleaning is a polish with fine sandpaper and to be washed off with alcohol or even just soapy water and dried thoroughly.
