I have a radar detector in my car and am wanting to mount it to my bike, whats the usual way that people hook it up so that they can tell when it goes off?

Either a HARD system with a wireless LED for in your helmet but has cons of forgetting to turn it off and having flat batteries, or a Screamer powered speaker so u can hear the RD over road and wind noise

If its not weatherproof ... dont bother ...
Depending on model ... either a warning buzzer/speaker in your ear or lead with a light at the side of your visor.

What makes you say that? There are plastic weatherproof cases available for the popular (read effective) models of detector.
The only weatherproof detector is the TPX.
The best detectors are either Valentine V1, Bel STi, Escort 8500 X50, etc.
Do research, (www.radarroy.com) don't believe the marketing departments. No detector can jam radar!!!!
Notification wise, either the HARD system or a screamer are effective, also the Bel and Escort detectors have a headphone jack on the side that can be plumbed into you helmet to either a earphone or speaker.

My TPX works as good as any other I have come accross and saved me plenty.
I rely soely on visual, 3 red LEDs stuck to the top of my Gauge cluster..well in my vision, and I react the same as if it was a set of brake lights on a car I am following...in case I was accidentally speeding that is....:msn-wink:

So ... what model does HE have ... ???
With weather PROOF ... or weather RESISTANT cases ... ???
And if he DID have weatherproof cases ... regular changing/installition from car to bike and back, will reduce how effective the waterproofing is.
How long will it take to swap from one to the other ... ???
To the original poster ... GOOD LUCK ...

Pelican case, some foam and rubber mounting onto a Ram solutions mount. Any detector and right size case would be quite waterproof. Just need to drill a few holes for mounting, and one for cables.

Detectors don't like water but all you need is a plastic bag and a rubber band.
More than one person I know just has a plastic tube running from the detector to their ear. Low tech but it works.
One of my helmets has a HARD fitted, the other has a speaker installed.
Pluses and minuses for each.

I haven't done that since yesterday. It takes about a minute? Maybe less.

Bel STI in the tank bag with an screamer and switch on the bag. The tank bag is magnetic and all the wiring is in the gap between magnetic base and bag. An auto 12 volit socket is located in front of the tank. I can't see the detector (nor can anyone else) but can hear the screamer.

Waterproofing isn't a must have... just means you can't speed as much in the wet.

Do you notice any decrease in detection ability having the Bel STI in your bag opposed to having it on your bars or on the window of a car?

yes id like to know the answer to this too?
ive got my RD mounted ontop of the tank but that then means me tank bag is redundant...which is a huge pain in the ass!

I think the tank bag reduction in detection would be minimal. I've had my Bel STI in the glove box or in the centre arm rest/console thingy and it's picked up cops and automatic doors from miles away. The automatic doors at work seem to nearly be picked up nearly as early as when the RD is on the screen! Surprising but weird. I might have another test later as there's a K band "Your speed" sign just down the road from home :niceone:

Thanks for the advice guys.
Its not for the hyosung, getting rid of that in the next week or 2. The detector I have in the car is a bel sti which comes with a headphone jack.
The LEDs across the dash sounds like the option with the less hassles or maybe a wireless earpiece

I wouldn't know if the detection reduced. However the science of radio waves is clear - there will be no loss in signal from the fabric of the tank bag. If the bag was made of metal that would be a different story. On the other hand Laser detection is completely blocked.

LEDs across the dash will only be effective if they in your line of sight. On most bikes this is not the case.

My LED's are in my lower vision well below my line of sight to the road ahead...with my eyes on the road, the LEDs are maybe 20 degrees down... and plenty bright enough to get my attention on a sunny day.
They are red and I guess we all programmed in to dangers of stop lights, brake lights, warning lights....flashing red lights....gulp....

As for the tank bag or other enclosed mountings, here's where I used to have mine on the 600RR:

Instead of weatherproofing measures, if it started raining I pulled it off (velcro'd on) and shoved it in my pocket. It was also shielded by the fairing from light rain/splashes etc while moving.
On all my bikes I have used a simple 3.5mm headphone extension cord that goes up the inside of the jacket inside the lining and comes out one end at the collar, one end at the belt line. Pair of headphones taken apart and stuck into helmet, and then it becomes second nature to plug into the bike when getting on. Simple, cheap, less likely to fail than anything wireless, and my personal preference is for a personal warning not a screamer.

where did you get the LED set-up? I run a HARD with my Escort, but I'd consider the bright LEDs as a back-up.
By the way I got my detector at Radar Direct. Ashok in Chch has water resistant moulded clear plastic cases for most of the better detectors.

My 3 LED cluster was supplied with the TPX Detector along with a screamer which I don't use.
